There are some interesting bits in the oil stage where you can see how the work wasn't a totally straight line, but I do some back and forth between shadows, lights and again shadows of the skins to establish a clearer division;
the initial wash was meant only to "stain the canvas" and get an oily priming layer for the proper brushwork so its contribute in creating shadows is limited to the deepest recess, like the space between fingers and the strongest shapes of the faces and it needs a boost of intensity.
The brushwork is also better represented here: still a single pass of single highlighting tones but a solid third of the three stages process!
