Alan's arguments about Turkey/Türkiye being all fine and comfortable ignored the way that the country and the people are seen and spoken about in Europe, especially by the populist right. One of the most successful arguments for Brexit was the warning of the influx of Turks (Türks?) that would come with their country's accession to the EU. I can understand why they would feel a need to own their identity.
