Teaching Jake | Script and Sound Effects

So... let's talk about how there's no music in this video.

It sadly means that I have no new music to give to you Novelty Instrumentalists, but it was an intentional choice! I often lean on music a little too hard to get people to really connect with a video (Jonah's music for $20K was exactly what it needed to make it fit the cheesy salesman vibe while amping up the horror, but it wouldn't fit for this one), so I wanted to try making something where all the sounds could have actually happened in the context of the video itself.

But as you might have seen in the behind the scenes video I just posted, these sounds did not happen in the context of the video itself! It was all recorded after the fact. So if you need any VHS/VCR sound effects for a project you're working on, feel free to download these noises and put them to use!

You'll also find the PDF for the script here. I ended up staying pretty dang close to the script, since the video is a series of loops. I couldn't do many ad libs. But I did end up cutting out this line in the edit:

It felt a little heavy handed as I watched it, and I think it stretched the clip out a little too long. I did like the fact that it called back directly to the scene where the dad is yelling at the scary figure in the hallway (lots and lots of WHO ARE YOUs) and might have made people believe "the viewer" of the TV is the same scary figure. On the other hand, I like how ambiguous "the viewer" ends up being in this version, so I'm happy I cut it. Sometimes cutting three words is all it takes to change your opinion on what a video means! Or maybe I'm the only one who was thinking that much about this vid.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the random VHS noises! The next vid should be a song vid, so expect new tunes soon!

Just watched this again today. Between this and the “how to make 20k” one blew my mind and. I show them to everyone. I wish That there was so much more of them! Short film horror is my favorite and I truly believe you and Karen are my fav directors of it. Love your other stuff too! Best of luck !

Being honest, I hope you shift to a half horror/half comedy thing! The whole vibe of this video was really great, and had me on edge the entire time.

I love love loved this video. My friend, who is a film major, also loved it. He’s not a patron, but would like you to know: “The audio is too clean.” They often say comedy and horror are reflections in the same mirror. The timing, the pacing — you got it, man. Keep it up.

That video was really well done! the atmosphere you had going throughout the video was perfect and made me feel a sense of uneasiness towards the beginning of the film. another amazing vid as always and you’ve inspired me to try my hand at writing a little horror story. love you brian!

Getting access to this script convinced me to go up a tier because I'm obsessed with this video and the work that went into it. I'm so glad you're getting to explore the horror space more and doing interesting things with it!

I think cutting the line was the right move. Honestly, the "You're not-" followed by the abrupt cut was, at least for me, probably the most chilling moment of the entire video. It gives a whole different meaning and feel to the scene than if it had been left in. Absolutely phenomenal video, easily some of your best work!

I was just listening to a podcast where they talked about how taking out even a few words can change the effect something has on the viewer. I think you were right to cut the line, It makes you think a bit more about what's going on. I do find it funny that in a way you basically made a pov bdg is your dad asmr video. Good job like always!

Clee Alice

you are definitely, definitely not the only person who will be thinking that much about this video.
