Teaching Jake | BEHIND THE SCENES

Howdy, y'all. I accidentally made a jokeless video. Oh shoot!

But at least you can now watch how I made that jokeless video right here!

PASSWORD: bitmuspark

This video had a LOT of planning going into it, and I am VERY BAD at planning. I usually prefer to have a three hour impromptu filming session followed by a 20 hour editing session where I scrub through three hours of garbage looking for the funny bits. But in this case, I had to do lots and lots and lots of prep work to make sure everything sounded right and was filmed correctly—followed by a short and enjoyable edit. Honestly, I kind of liked it.

But I will never get good at planning. I refuse. I won't change even if it's good for me.

This was by far my weirdest/most uncomfortable/most ambitious/least-likely-to-get-people-to-watch-it video I've ever made, and although I'm super proud of it, I have been incredibly anxious about posting it for the past week or so. I've made serious longform videos and a few horrors before, but they all started in jokey formats. This one doesn't have that wonderful joke cushion, and as someone whose number one defense mechanism is resorting to humor, I gotta say: Wow That's Tough To Deal With!

I definitely wouldn't have done this if I didn't have y'all supporting me, so thanks for allowing me to branch out a little! I don't think I'll ever stop feeling the pressure to make clickable, easily enjoyable videos, but knowing that I have a strong support network allows me to try new things like this. I hope you enjoyed it!

And if you only supported me for the funny videos, well, whoopsie! My bad! The next one will be funny again. Or at least an attempt at funny.

I'll send some updates on the next videos later this month. Catch in with you then!

Comments

just wanted to say I loved this video and that it was the reason that I clicked the patreon link right away to give you my support. thank you!

Luiza Melki

I absolutely loved this video! Your jokey stuff lands every single time with me but this blew me away! I am so ecstatic every single time you post. I can't wait to see what comes next!

Jasmine Neal

This video was fucking amazing. I don't like horror, and I felt all kinds of dread while watching, but I was very glad to see it all.

DD

After watching Teaching Jake I was left wondering if it was meant to be psychological horror or supernatural horror. Not that I want an answer, I just think it is super impressive to successfully walk that line. Fantastic video Brian

Meuce

I loved this video, your purely comedy videos are wonderful and always make my day, but the videos with surreal/horror elements are my FAVORITES! I had a similar feeling the first time I watched through Dances Moving - any time you branch out with your content, you knock it out of the park!

Ray uwu

I truly was blown away Brian. Really good short. I'd love to see more of your work in the horror space.

uncle fucklord

The behind the scenes stuff was really neat- I didn't even think about how you'd edited the different takes together. (I definitely didn't notice anything). Also, the Scary Man was extremely effective- spooked the heck out of me. I had actually assumed it was someone in a hoodie standing on a box, so clearly it was convincing!

insufficient data for a meaningful answer

Hi. I just wanted to mention I've been a fan for a while, but it was this video that made me decide to become a patron. I totally get the fear behind trying something completely new, but speaking for myself anyways, it's obvious when someone's full heart is into it, and in this case the result was something spectacular. I can't wait to see more stuff, whether it's jokey or straight.

Liliana

My unplayed gloomhaven box has also been extremely useful as a monitor stand, etc

GreatBearShark

It was incredible but NOT the video i should have come upon extremely high expecting a funney time lmao

Shiny_9tales

I clicked expecting jokes, and was met with existential horror. Absolutely loved it. Bravo, good sir!

Harper MacDonald

I joined the Patreon just to tell you that your most recent video is by far my favourite thing you have ever made, Brian. Kudos. More like this pls.

Kieran Cutting

This was so good! I watched it right before I was going to go to sleep, and, welp.

August

Look at you Mr. Wes Craven, Mr. David Lynch, the next Harlan Ellison!

Jeff Rodgers

this is exactly the sort of content i was hoping you'd make. This video was so unsettling and deeply effective, its the kind of scary that sticks with you well after you've watched it. I absolutely loved this.

Hincaru

It was great, Brian! Love that you get to try new things!

Jennifer Mileta

This is not the kind of content that I thought I was signing up for when I signed up for this contribution tier. I loved this video, and I'm glad I'm signed up for this tier. I'm telling you this because you've seemed anxious about whether your audience will follow you as you create content that draws from the broader palette of your general personal tastes, rather than the more narrow palette of your previous commercial work. I can't speak for anyone but me, but let me be a data point supporting the thesis that "you've found your audience." I would choose to consume a piece of media that wasn't a type I normally consume solely on the basis of your involvement in it, secure in the belief that I will probably enjoy your work. I think this is true of many other people, too. ^_^

Brodyjohn

Can I get this video on a VHS?

N.Richardson

Excellent! A video only you two could make.

Cameron

im back and thoroughly terrified! it was also really enjoyable to see how you made this video, I like learning about how horror films are made, deconstructing the spook if you will (and this is a short horror film if I've ever seen one, your and Karen's work is incredible!!!)

B.E. Albert

I *love* your weird/horror videos. They're all bangers. Not enough weird videos in my feeds. I can't wait to see more in the future.

Elijah

Holy smokes, this was insanely good and effectiv! I'm not much into horror, but I enjoy the psychological atmospheric stuff that doesn't rely on jump scares and you nailed that! I am legit anxious right now and it reminded my so much of a movie from Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) in tone, feeling and message. Keep on spookin'!

Andreas Engelhardt

this is my favourite thing you've ever made! not this behind-the-scenes, but the actual video! although the behind-the-scenes was also fun! not fun-haha necessarily, but interesting-fun! 'teaching jake' the video was uncomfortable-fun! which maybe doesn't sound like a compliment, but is! ! !!! i'm making an effort to respond favourably! so you won't think your less jokey projects! are unpopular! or unwanted! by your fanbase! i'm uncomfortable describing myself as somebody's! anybody's! fanbase! i started on exclamation points and now i don't know how to stop! attaboy!

odin

this video reminds me of like, the kind of insidious horror i watched stuff like everymanhybrid for, horror that feels homely, a deep wrongness thats had me on edge literally all day, and it is honestly my favorite video ive ever seen from you. so thank you, so genuinely, for making this.

Jordan Mitchell

This is was spooky and rly enjoyable!

Allyson Hollier

I would love to see a full length low budget horror movie made by Brian and Karen.

Lizard Mix

Same. I said it on yt but i'll say it again: announce a feature and i will back you

KIRBY BRENNAN-RIDDLE

I'm loving seeing what you make without anyone asking you to make it. Personally, I support you because your videos inspire me to try my own creative projects. The fact that this video is so different from your past projects just opens my mind that much more to different things I could try. Thanks for the inspiration, and I look forward to whatever comes next!

David Ellison

I am watching this video looking for clues

Zuraith

I gotta say I got way more scared than I thought I would 10/10 would spook again!

Bradley Samples

You're the next Alan Resnick, man. I'm so glad you can make such interesting new content with our support. Looking forward to whatever comes next.

Caito Moore

Humor and variety are both valuable. I trust your judgment.

Scezumin

This turned out great! The steps you took made for really affective visual and audio. When I read your previous post about this video I was wondering how filming a TV playing a vhs would turn out but you worked it out brilliantly.

Sam Skaaland

It's really interesting to see how you recorded this and planned it! That looks like a lot of work... *sweats in communication arts major*

Rachael Alexander

Hey, been a fan for a while but I signed up for patreon because of how much I liked this video.

Jacob Deaven

It's really cool how you can experiment with the videos you're making. This video was so good and eerie, and it was really interesting to see the bts process of it!

Amalie Lind Hansen

this was like watching steve carrel go from 40 year old virgin to the dad in beautiful boy

Casual Ishiguro

Celery Man. Gloomhaven. Love it

Phil Pritchard

Finally got to watch the upload - MAN that was so excellent, I loved it

Erica

I can really appreciate the creativity and effort after seeing the behind the scenes! The video gave me chills, in a good way, and YouTube is the perfect format for the concept. I shared this with my husband and he enjoyed it even though he wouldn’t be a fan of your funny stuff.

Tiffany

so cool!

The Doubleclicks

i fully thought Karen's silhouette was the scary man when i watched it, so it did indeed work out 👍

Robin Palmquist

I'm here for the goofs. I'm here for the scares. I'm here for the weird stuff. I'm just here, wherever you're taking us.

Sean O

You are SO talented, I really enjoyed this. I love all of your work and it's really cool to see you making videos without the boundaries you may have had working with polygon

kt

This was incredible and terrifying without relying on any of the things that normally terrify me, so, uh, thank you? I think? I sure needed to sleep this week but oh well that's a minor detail. The making of is also just.. really cool, to see the process on this.

Alli

When I finished watching Teaching Jake I realized I was clenching my teeth. I felt like I’d just gone back to the first time I read The Boogeyman by Stephen King. And then I watch this “making of” video and now I can just picture Brian standing there screaming “WHO ARE YOU?!” at his coat and pants hung up with fishing wire. Lmao. The point is A+ writing, A+ acting, A+ editing, A+ human being.

AlyKat

As somebody who considers Dances Moving one of my favourite pieces of art I have to say: I think this could be my favourite thing you’ve ever made!

William Wallis

This was terrifying and I loved every frame of it.

Angela Quinton

This video got me to join your Patreon so, hey! That's something

Sciman101

Its an interesting video for sure. I think the fact that I knew going in it would be a sorta looped video changed how I experienced it? I remembered mentions of your planning from previous posts so I was already looking to internalize details as it started. I found myself fixating on details like which words you left out or where the camera pointed when you zoomed in but altogether the consistency where consistency was intended was spot on. I usually have no stomach at all for horror but this didn't shake me like other media has. I just enjoyed it. I like your attention to detail in the set and scripted movements and it's also super cool to see the dialogue already forming about what it all means. I selfishly hoped you'd unravel it a bit yourself behind the scenes but I respect that you didn't. Maybe I just need to watch it a few more times. Who knows? Regardless. This was deeply enjoyable and well worth the wait. Thank you for creating this.

Riley Sheldon

Heartily support this descent into creepypasta

Emma Allain

This absolutely terrified me I'm really glad there's a behind the scenes video to lessen that scariness - great work Brian and Karen!

Annie A

A fantastic vid, genuinely worthy of some sort of short film award or something.

Nobody needs to know

I LOVE this video so much!! I was so thrilled to see a full serious video from you honestly! I loved the “being your own boss” video and it’s so exciting to see a video that takes it a step further and drops the goofs completely. Obsessed!!

Wren Cole Star

hey hey brian?? scared the shit out of me - great job!

Jack

I’m a parent, and my spouse has variously sported all of the facial hair configurations captured in this video. This . . . messed me up a little. Well done.

Michelle O

Ayyy it's also mine! Happy birthday fellow pisces!

Clee Alice

I'm shook

Nikhil Harithas

You are great at what you do, I love it. Gloomhaven is an intimidating game to start, and to play, but there be fun in those bits of cardboard, a lot of fun.

greg Foster

I absolutely love it!

Ryan

so good and spooky!! i was gonna wait until later to watch it but my friend insisted i watch now so we can discuss and definitely a good choice not to watch at night

elijah b

I'm called Jake and I totally wasn't creeped out by this late at night.

Smithusama

Just happy to see you doing whatever you want

Krys Ren

My friend and I also have a box of Gloomhaven that we haven't played yet.

Kenbomb

That gave me the chills that was terrifying. Great video Brian.

Spencer Ward

Real good vid bud. Keep at it.

Jérémie Bonal

I'm a huge fan of all horror stuff and your videos have always been personal favorite 💖 and a big inspiration too! seriously, yours and jordan peele's work know how to get the psychological field just _right_. please keep doing all your weird ideas, I'm all for it!!

Isadora Sophia

Loved this so much! Also, GLOOMHAVEN! Best board game ever made! Hope you and Karen enjoy it!

Tom Rourke

I really liked the video, and I especially appreciate the behind the scenes. I was wondering how you got the Authentic Look with good sound because I've tried recreating the camcorder look in post and it always........looks bad. So this was sick to see that you did it with the actual equipment and could upload it to your computer. Anyway, this is to say nice video + bts!

Cas Gustafsson

Immediately sent the youtube link for this video to people I know will enjoy it. This hits a particular horror sweet spot that is difficult to pull off well.

Maggie Stewart

This was amazing!

CometMoth

I hated this is the best way <3

Lomky

It passed my scary test: I had to pause mid-way-through to slow my breathing before hitting play again. Two thumbs up!

ILikeYarnAlot

I would love to see a continuation of this story as a series! (Also, always look forward to your behind-the-scenes. I'm learning so much!)

Chelsea McGovern

You have a talent for making the uncanny and unsettling! They say horror is humor without a punchline, so you're not as far from your comfort zone as you might think. Great work and amazing video!

Rachel Frankland

I broadly dislike horror because it often resorts to cheap tactics like gore and jumpscares, so when a work of art like this comes out I have to hold onto it because quality, vague, surreal horror is hard to come by in my neck of the woods.

Lauren

I LOVED THE VIDEO!! the horror was very well done and it made me feel uncomfortable at points (but like, in a way horror is supposed to)!! so good, i wouldn't mind u making more videos like this in the future at all!!

star

Maan, that was my reaction entirely. I'm such a coward for terror, but BDG makes it worth it. Also I just opened the making of video and am now laughing at all of the Paul Rudd images. Haven't even pressed play yet lmao.

Uiberon Araujo

Great job, this was incredible! I really love seeing the process behind the videos. Just wanted to mention that I did notice Karen's reflection in your glasses on my first watch, and it did creep me out even more, so congrats! I had to take out my headphones and clutch my neck to watch the rest of it, with the sound on speakers

rhymnoceross

Loved both the vid and the behind the scenes. Seeing the process is super cool and I think you pulled it off fantastically

Danish

This was awesome to watch! Had me gripped from beginning to the end! Great work!

Brandon Farmer

Minor Spoilers: No gore, but there is some surrealist horror. He yells in pain at one point and it's very convincing. Scary black figure also shows up, but again no body horror.

Christian Bedwell

Something about the way you slowly layer on the horror elements makes me actually enjoy this, and that's coming from someone who doesn't like watching horror at all. It's something like, I wouldn't watch videos of gruesome car accidents, but if the slow-mo guys were filming it, I probably would; in this instance, you are the slow-mo guys, and the car wreck is a horror film... Keep doing this, I somehow love it?

Daniel Allen (Brynath)

oh,, i did not expect that, but it was SO good and very uncomfortable to watch.. i look forward to rewatch it and see ppl analyse it, and see more of your more work that contains less jokes! thank you for sharing your creativity with the world! what genre you dip into doesn't matter, it's so wonderful to see you create !

mathias elliot

The dread i felt when i first saw the vaguely man thing on the right, but i wasnt sure if it was actually meant to be something out of place. Brought that perfect feeling of "somethings Not quite right" before things shifted into obviously more noticeable horror

Viddygaem

So spooky, I really think between this and 20k you could get somebody like blumhouse on the phone if you and Karen had a horror feature you guys had written

Pablo Brown-Jennett

this was such a good video, i will now proceed to have nightmares as it's currently 1AM here lmao im really not much of a horror fan but i'm definitely looking forward to watch more of your horror content!! thank you again :D

avi

I cringed in fear the whole time and am scared to watch the video again but also know I'm gonna watch it so many more times. Seriously, I love the range of weird that your videos run.

ashurredly

I loved the video Brian! I've never seen anything like it made before and the fact that you have such a range of different kinds of content is part of why I watch your videos! I never know what exactly I'm gonna get when I click on it and it's always even better than I expect

Pigeonn

I'm really interested in watching this video, but are there any content warnings for gore or body horror? I know it's been more surrealist horror but I wanted to ask just in case!

B.E. Albert

Really enjoying the horror and serious shorts a lot. Super happy you're getting to explore doing these, they've each captured a really specific tone or liminal space and its really satisfying to chew on in the back of your brain. So these are a real good treat. Props to you and Karen for doing such a great job. Also I LOVE the happy accident of Karen's reflection in your glasses winding up being useful for the 'spooky man' effect.

George Rohac

This is awesome! One of my favorite videos on your channel I think.

Tyler Millis

This is so incredibly well executed video! Holy shit!

Viniter

I’m not a film critic or anything, but the camerawork is unbelievably good in this, and the acting is so on point in a... very specific way. Not sure how this comment would come through, but this seriously gives me Lynch vibes. Pls do more!!

Yvonne Chen

This is fantastic, I love how well you guys fluctuate between hilarious comedy, surrealism, and horror and blend them whenever you desire. It's always entertaining and often deeply unsettling...which I'm sure is exactly the point. Kudos <3

Samantha Roman

Wasn't planning on FEELING today, but you got me. C:

Kaidan Cormier

To be honest I'm a baby and I'm scared shitless by most horror stuff but I actually watched the whole video and while shitting myself I actually enjoyed it on a level? So I think you did a great job if you could bring me to watch the whole thing

GraySky

I loved this video a lot, it made me so uncomfy but in the best way. I hope you keep exploring the horror genre cause you do it well!

joewidd

That was an excellent video! I really love your delves into horror, they're a great watch :)

Saga Nørgaard

Look at you, Mr. Director! Mr. Big Shot Director over here! This video was great and the scary man was indeed very scary!

David Kanter

I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but this was excellent. This is legit way better than most of the short films I've seen at festivals, so major kudos.

A treasure token featuring Spice8Rack’s face

Just watched it and MAN did that make my office lunch room seem cold and desolate. I loved the use of lighting and the weird way that colors show up on VCR film. Keep making weird things that push your craft! Or don’t, I guess. Whatever you want really, you’re the boss.

Sam

This was downright creepy. At least Dorian Smiles had a surreal humor to it. This was straight up horror. Well done!

Stephen Struble

This was super interesting to watch, both for your process and just from a media format point of view. I’m in television and we were still outputting shows to digibeta and hdcam ten years ago and shrugged at digital media libraries. It just fascinates me how quickly the video media format has evolved, and this mixed approach to capturing is going to make a seriously cool video.

Erica

Loved this video Brian, it almost reminded me of somebody like Alan Resnick, in a good way. Keep it up!

Literal chills watching it! Beautifully done

Carla Galvan

Honestly WONDERFUL video, i feel it will be one that ill be theroising what it means with friends for a while to come!

Whalersvow

it's amazing dude! will be thinking about this for a while

seaweed

Atta boy! Look at you, the new steven spielberg... Honestly it was super unsettling to watch and the horror aspect definitely shines through, needless to say it was phenomenal!

Munguistic

I am actively afraid post-watching that but also INCREDIBLY impressed. I continue to be thrilled by everything you're doing.

Katie Volker

I LOVED this (except the part that I hated, but like 10/10 for phenomenal direction to be able to make it SO UNCOMFORTABLE). I'll definitely be watching it over and over soon to try and pick up on the subtler changes. I love all your videos, regardless of genre! They all have that ~you~ flare, which is phenomenal in itself

Lauren Prince

Nah, Brian, that video was amazing. Horror or humor, keep doing what youre doing!

Tj Martin

It was a very good video. Well done.

Well-Spoken Rambler

Mr. David Gilbert it is my birthday today and I thank you for this gift
