Harmon was let go because he kept turning in scripts late. They only let him back for S5 because it was a reduced number of episodes. Chevy Chase was just unpleasant to everyone and hated the job, so they finally dumped him/he quit.

2022-03-10 22:10:38 +0000 UTCThe gas leak was just a funny little easter egg joke they came up with this season to justify why everything and everyone was so off. As far as Chevy Chase goes, he's notoriously difficult to work with and a major a-hole. I think he and Harmon had a falling out which I believe is what lead to Harmon being let go for season 4. I believe his cameo here was actually filmed on a completely different studio lot to avoid any issues.
