Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE EP 1

Who I was rooting for? Megan for being all around awesome, Sophia for being true to her name ("wisdom") and 100% on "natural leader" characterisation, and Lexie. Maybe not from the start, but I really really wanted her in the group. No spoilers, but... obviously, she's not. I also admired Adéla but not sure if I was rooting for her as much; I do think she was more than skilled enough, maybe the puzzle piece wasn't puzzle piecing...

2025-08-07 04:34:21 +0000 UTCI'm pretty sure the western teachers had a lot of feedback, just by the fact that they were working with them for the whole month; we just didn't get to see much of it. The trainees did improve, so the teachers did do what they needed to do; but evaluation drama makes for a better Netflix show. There is also the fact that the western teachers grew attached to the trainees, while the Korean ones, only meeting them once in a while (or, like Bang PD, only through the screen), stay more distanced.

2025-08-07 04:31:08 +0000 UTCalsooo after pop star academy i definitely recommend checking out, whether reacting or your own time, the mini docu series following katseye’s small tour of korea, japan and the phillipines. it follows a similar style to this documentary and is really cool to see the girls get closer and experience things so early in their career and visiting yoonchae and sophia’s home countries (they actually show them visiting sophia’s house) they also meet lesserafim again and some seventeen and fromis9 members :)

2025-08-06 14:21:38 +0000 UTCIt’s not surprising people were critical of Bang PD and Son whilst I agreed with them. I just dealt with a situation where I cut three white Americans from something because of their values and attitude. They saw nothing wrong with their behavior and the only people who agreed with me and were on my side were all POC. I think it’s a total cultural mindset clash which is NUMBER ONE the biggest reason I worried about an American K-pop group period. I worried they would lack the same work ethic, be bratty/entitled, and not understand sacrifice. I’m glad that it seems like all the contestants are all insane hard workers and it seems like only people who watched the show disagreed.

2025-08-06 14:19:22 +0000 UTCSo far, THUS FAR—I love Missy. But we shall see I’m still mid way through the series!

2025-08-06 14:13:09 +0000 UTCActually Son did it twice before, because he was a major part in the creation of Enhypen

2025-08-06 09:44:35 +0000 UTCOk, first off, i just know that if i was to ever go through an experience like this, the most torturous part would be seeing people getting cut. I barely know abby and I was in tears seeing her get cut, I can't imagine how I would feel if i spent a month getting to know her and then see her leave. This is why i have a love-hate relationship with survival shows/shows showing the process of making a group. I love to know as much as I can about how musical acts are made but I grow attached and then cry when contestants leave... If i was watching this without knowing Katseye's lineup, I would definitely be draw to Naisha and Adela. I think they are both vocally stable and have a lot of skill in dancing. I quite like the way naisha dances but i understand the comment about needing to shift gears from just performing with power. I actually also feel that way about feel that way about Iliya. I liked her voice in all the clips they put in of her singing. But they sounded like songs that are low in pitch (e.g., "here" by alessia cara) and while listening to her singing at the evaluation, her voice didn't quite hit the same for me when she was singing in a higher register or falsetto, which are very typical of a pop song. I also was really shocked by the feedback that the western teachers were giving? There were a couple of instances where people were off pitch, it could be nerves, it could be lack of a singing background. But i believe that needs to be pointed out in the form of constructive criticism so that the contestants know to be conscious of it and fix it. Son was really the only one that gave it right as it was, which is how it needs to be. I understand that it can be seen as harsh, but to me that will still achieve more than not giving criticism at all. Lastly, I'm honestly keen on keeping the survival show part a secret from the girls. Survival shows are a huge pressure not an environment that every can thrive in. If i was in their shoes, even if i knew i couldn't handle a survival show, I would feel trapped because I have worked so hard to come to that point and leaving would make that hard work feel in vain. I'm an advocate for telling it as it is and letting the girls decide whether they want to take part in it. That to me, also makes for an environment where everybody is there because they are passionate and willing to give their all.

2025-08-06 08:22:32 +0000 UTCI wrote my first comment while I was watching the video and so now I have to rephrase my words about Naisha! Wow! I DO LIKE HER! The way she talked about water left me flabbergasted! The speech of yours about how Americans care HOW something said more than WHAT is said… This is exactly the reason I suggested A2K a while ago, because J.Y. Park understood this aspect perfectly and while he was still in his Korean mindset, it was so obvious he was trying to explain/educate the girls on why the Korean mindset and attitude is like this. In general although I have to admit I am enjoying this show so far (which I did not expect to happen), I feel like there should be more of the “Korean nature” of Kpop training system than just “you will work hard and for many hours and we will focus on every detail in every department”. I mean, this is also what makes Kpop Kpop, but I hope they will get to the “cultural aspect” of Kpop too, because that is what I enjoyed in A2K the most. (Also! Apparently JYP is planning a fresh restart for VCHA, they might be coming back with a new name and basically whole rebranding! I hope J.Y. Park himself will be involved in everything way more than as it happened after A2K that people in JYP America were taking care of them without any proper person like J.Y. Park, who would navigate their whole idol life process and things around that! Just letting you know in case you would be looking for a girl group survival show content to balance either Universe League or Lastart 😏😉🫵🏽) Regarding my feedback solely to this episode and first feelings of this show… I find super interesting to see the “behind the scenes” of preparations and formations of Kpop groups or musical acts in general, so although I might not agree with some details I know about this, I can see myself finishing it and enjoying it a lot! One thing which I did not agree with even during the “survival show” was them having their social media accounts active to gain more voters based on their online popularity. Which kind of happens here too… I like Manon a lot, but I find questionable that they mention they need to debut the group soon, so there is not enough time for others to grow, but then they cast from their own will/interest someone, who is just popular and good-looking. Which is basically a form of street casting, but in that case you (mostly) cast those trainees for the long run and not like: “Hey, we are debuting a group soon. Don’t you want to join our company and go through this “Kpop training fast track version”, so you can join the line up??” The part, when you pointed out them being girls may possible help, because in the case of boy you would worry they turn out to be dicks. Hmm… I do not know why, but that is the thing I worry about Santos Bravos (HYBE Latin America program to form a latin Kpop boy group). Like… watching this makes me think that if Son gave his feedback to a guy, he would have responded something like: “You know, I think I am right and you should respect my opinion” But on the other hand there is just like one or two Americans and the rest is from Spanish or Portuguese speaking countries, so the cutural aspect there will be different… By the way… I personally liked Son’s feedback the most so far!

2025-08-06 03:44:16 +0000 UTCYou should watch all of the performances as well! For some reason, they're separate from the series...

2025-08-06 02:25:29 +0000 UTCYou reacting to this will be the only reason I finish the series LOLL. I could only get through episode 4, but TV shows always come off better when you watch them with people

2025-08-06 01:39:06 +0000 UTCI was super surprised about the lack of actual constructive criticism the rest of the western teachers said. Like targeted comments for improvement never really happened which how can you expect anyone to grow if you dont give them points to improve?

2025-08-05 23:59:38 +0000 UTCI am so so interested to see your opinion of Missy through this show. I have so many thoughts about her style of leading / teaching. But also yes! i was baffled by the amount of sugarcoating all the other teachers and executives were doing. This show lowkey painted Son as such a bad guy, only because the others were so sweet and more worried about protecting feelings than giving feedback. Growing up in India and then moving abroad, its kinda shocking to see how "in their feelings" foreigners are. I thought I was ultra sensitive growing up but I guess not. Asians in general might be extremely straightforward and definitely not what americans/europeans would be prepared for

2025-08-05 20:44:04 +0000 UTCOooh finally!! I was really waiting for this, are you gonna watch their performances? Because that'll effect your view for sure. In show they didnt show us any of the girls or the training process itself. Just dropped elimination videos, announcements and performances. Weird concept. So in the docu, you dont really see how did they do in missions. You agreed with him, but people roasted the shit out of Bang PD for saying all that about star quality. Son also got criticized for being harsh in evaluations. People also didnt like survival show being a surprise for the girls. It was a whole circus :D I agree with you on Naisha. I think she thinks herself as a main character. I know you're waiting for Lara, and let me tell you, when she shows up you will want to continue on the next episode, immediately :D My picks were: Karlee, Iliya, Lexie, Megan, Daniella and Marquise in the beginning. I was SURE Lexie would be on the group. I loved Lara & Sophia & Nayoungs vocals but didnt vote for them at any stage of the show :D They had voters already so i mainly voted for my picks :D I never noticed Manon in any of the performances. She worked hard on her skills. Yoonchae was a shock too. She was stable on every stage but never the one to caught my attention.

2025-08-05 18:59:02 +0000 UTCWOO! The Naisha update is very comforting to hear because I really like her both attitude and skill wise and then I got to episode 3 and was sad to see her go!
Jet
2025-08-05 18:57:23 +0000 UTCIt is indeed hard to separate and part of it may be biased BUT idk I personally think she has a very natural charm about her. Less about skill and more about her personality.
Jet
2025-08-05 18:55:52 +0000 UTCI think its funny that pd is saying he would have rooted for Megan from the beginning. Because you literally see almost nothing of her in this episode 😅 I don't mean this as hate, I love Megan and especially in the later episodes she has so many cool moments in my opinion. But I think it's fascinating how the perception is so different when one already knows who will be in the group

2025-08-05 16:25:09 +0000 UTCYou can watch along with the documentary, it includes a lot. As for the other contestants I don’t want to spoil much but let’s say this show doesn’t lack drama

2025-08-05 16:05:59 +0000 UTCDamn… this gives me flashbacks to 2023, when both this and A2K aired, it makes me emotional to get reminded that JYP’s VCHA is done (hopefully L2K’s group happens to have brigther future 😭😭) Also… can anyone tell if it is necessary to watch the performances and the whole “show” prior to this? I decided to watch this documentary with PD without following the “show” to find out on my own, but I am still curious if anyone else has done this too. By the way… I am curious why certain contestants did not make the cut. For example Naisha caught my attention a lot!
