2025-04-15 13:43:28 +0000 UTCRegarding your statement about Jeon Somi: There have been survival shows before Produce 101, but it used to be mainly in-house survival shows, which were rather documentaries with eliminations (for example the BIGBANG pre-debut show or JYP’s shows for their groups), but then Mnet took it to the “nation-wide reality show level” and Produce started to be a thing and that influenced other stations to have survival shows too + companies started to promote their in-house survival show way more because of that. Then (and this might be just my personal feeling) it stopped being such a hot topic, when the controversy with Produce happened, but it pretty much came back with the “Planet shows”, although I would not say it is as big as it used to be. Mainly because of Girls Planet not being as big as female Produce shows, therefore only Boys Planet lived up to the Produce hype. But also because there have been so many survival shows, so it has become more like a norm/standard, so it is hard to become as big as Somi is after a survival show ends.
