I LAND 2 EP 2 - DISCUSSION

SO LET'S TALK ABOUT JIYOON

I LAND 2 EP 2 - DISCUSSION

Comments

I agree 100%.. I love all members of izna now. but when i watched this episode back then, i felt the same about jiyoon. It was also the reason why i stopped watching the show soon after. If it was just evil editing i could have still watched it , but her attitude wasnt that. I know she got talent and skills but its a survival show most of them if not all are doing their best to survive the competition and debut, jiyoon included. But the way how she saw her own situation asvthe result of a betrayal despite her talented felt off. No one betrayed anyone , it was a limite count of votes, off course some will get more and some less , they cant vote for everyone. Those who got more deserved it in my opinion atleast cause we saw how jeongun had made some blunders when assiging roles and later she acknowledged it listened to the team to reassign it , talked with jiyoon and mai to not make them feel any less important or left out and she also did a fantastic job at her own part as well . Sujong worked hard with teaching the choreography, ita a big responsibility. With others also i could more or less understand why they got the votes. Jiyoons attitude during practice would have been a big fact others would consider too.I felt bad for other trainees and those who still did their best despite not getting the preferred parts and also those who got more votes and the voters who gave those votes. Its none of their fault, still their expressions seemed like they blamed themselves for jiyoons situation, while jiyoon herself didnt see her shortcomings and only thought ahe didnt make it because others didnt like her. I do like all 7 members of izna, and i do think jiyoons vocals are amazing and here i am giving the show another chance while watching PDs reaction. I heard that jiyoon did change for the better so i am here for it.

Being intense is fine, but thinking you deserve something only because you're talented is completely different. She has not once mentioned how she's worried she'll have to go to the ground because she made the training process difficult, she only talked about how talented she is. Everyone in the top 12 is talented, so what sets them apart besides talent? Their personality and attitude. It's okay to be upset, but if she acknowledged her shortcomings, I wouldn't mind her reaction. Fuko and Gyuri acknowledged theirs. It looks like it didn't even cross Jiyoon's mind she could be on the chopping board. I am also intense about things I care about and have a resting bitch face so I've never been popular because of that. But Jiyoon was acting less like an outcast and more like a popular girl who thinks she deserves to get what she wants because she's popular. I'm sure the others didn't go to her because they didn't know how she would react, not because they didn't like her. (Sorry for the tangent, I can't wait to fall in love with Jiyoon throughout the show)

Andie

Idk if you’re trying to rage bait but 0/10

Strawberry_177

Only for health reasons. She should be back with Izna later, when she is better

I watched this show after knowing majority of the IZNA lineup and honestly, I wish I could've captured my face watching the first half of this show with how shocked I was that the audience loved Jiyoon from the start LMAO. Considering how audiences usually treat contestants with her mindset / attitude, I was mf GOBSMACKED and so intrigued to see the rest of her journey. I cannot waitttttttt to see your reaction to the rest of the show !

the comeback is without jiyoon tho

Kuro Kurt

Hmm… okay!

this isn't really about the episode per se but the comment about ahyeon and jaeyhun and the "over-performing", "over-dancing", "over-exaggerating" etc. I definitely think they should not be hated on and I know they perform like that because they have a passion and love for performing. However, I'm honestly on the fence about the whole thing because of something Lee Know from Stray Kids said in an interview. He talked about how he holds himself back in dancing/performing when he's with Stray Kids because he doesn't want to overshine them because he is apart of a team not a soloist. It's for the sake of balance and energy and cohesiveness that he holds back a little when performing because it can throw off the group balance and dynamic. Because of this, I like see both sides I guess. Lee Know said this a couple years ago, so maybe his mindset has changed or he's started to show more of himself now (i wouldn't know as i am more of a casual fan now), but his belief about not wanting to stand out too much and take away the spotlight from his team has resonated even until now. I'm not saying that's Ahhyeon's or Jaehyun's or other idols who have been called "over-performers" intention is to "take away" the spotlight. it's weird for me to say they should match the group or the group matches their energy because then that sounds like I'm hating on them because i also don't want them to lose their passion and enthusiasm either! maybe it's not as black and white as im making it out to be but idk i've had this thought for a while but never really had anywhere to talk about it.

사랑

jiyoons just really intense and has alot of pride in her work. once u get to see her other side, shes actually the goofiest member of izna and is soooo funny - definitely my izna bias with jeemin as a close bias wrecker. you'll see later on how fast she can switch on from being a typical anxious young girl to a true performer

Kim Chaewon

@WiseSmellyLegs I think what the other comment is trying to say is that Jiyoon’s “evil editing” thing shown here in Episode 2 was part of her storyline/redemption arc because they already know where she ends up at the end of Part 1. So Mnet edit this episode without a fear that Jiyoon would be eliminated at least in the first half (which is something different from Produce or other survival shows). Now will people buy the story of “Zero to hero” for Jiyoon is another question, things could go very wrong and fans could possibly dislike Jiyoon and not vote for her in Part 2. Gladly, everyone saw through what Mnet trying to do and Jiyoon was pretty much one of top girls that had a very high chance of debuting in the end.

I knew this would be the moment jiyoon ensnared you! It makes me think of that moment you fell for gunwook and yes of course of jay too😆 I love how competitive she is and she KNOWS she’s damn good so people deciding she deserves the ground feels like injustice to her. I was very conscious when watching it for the 1st time to not automatically think negative of her as this kind of attitude is not usually appreciated in women especially a teenage girl. The end result of this show is a testament to jiyoon and that wearing her heart on her sleeve where people could’ve judged her hard, instead they couldn’t help but want her to succeed. I swear I could write a whole essay on jiyoon’s arc😅 This was the ep where Mai took her place on my list and never left. I didn’t pay enough attention to saebi this early so I’m glad to appreciate her part this time round. It is hard to watch members like fuko and sujung who contribute so much to the group but knowing they didn’t make it. By the way IZNA first single coming March 31st!! First comeback is so exciting

jessie

After this episode, I was hoping for Junggeun and Jeemin to be in the final lineup. Mai grew on me so much in the later episodes but rewatching this, I am able to appreciate her attitude and positivity so much earlier on now. I could understand Jiyoon's attitude each time an obstacle seemed to occur for her (e.g. not getting her chosen part and then having to go to ground). However, I was worried about her lack of motivation and mental strength each time this occurred. She definitely wasn't one of my picks for the debut at this stage but I was waiting to see how and if she would go about making it back to I-Land. During the sneak preview for the next round, I couldn't help but laugh at how Jiyoon looked with the blue veil? tied around her head like that.

Di

I did not want to say this was evil editing case. Obviously since she said it herself during the live aired last episode, it most likely was not evil edited. I was rather thinking whether Mnet did not tell her what to do during those episodes/rounds to help the narrative

WiseSmellyLegs

This might be unpopular opinion, but I think Jihyoon has way much more star power than Jay. Been to multiple Enhypen concerts, he just had no charisma in person and fades in the background unlike other members. And when I reviewed fancams afterwards, he always just had that straight face and nothing else. His singing and dancing is simply not captivating at all. But Jihyoon she has a wayy cooler attitude and better singing skills.

Annie

I agree, I don't remember Jay ever having that kind of attitude while practicing. But its also been a while haha

Ayeyassha

I'm crying at Grumpy Bear stormcloud LOL. Jiyoon won I-Land 2 the Emmy this season, it was so camp.

Neeko

ok, first of all, I knew you were gonna get jiyoon and fall for her personality like mee!! I love that girl so much, ofc this created a lot of discourse w the public (as also episodes kept coming), but I was the number one defender. as u said, she is different from the other girls, shows another type of personality, hunger and ambition in her eyes which I love, and that takes her to the attitude she took here, which isn't perfect but honestly that's why I love it too, bc in an industry which searches for perfection always, she cracked and showed emotions idols don't show. I also related her to jay for almost the same reasons, and like him, I feel like she needed to go to the ground to grow, and to mature like u said, and like that be able to debut. honestly this girl made me fall in love with her twice, first with her voice, I saw that potential if she grew confident, and then her personality. glad we may have the same bias hahah

Donatella

They had all 6 first eps so they New that she will do fine later So they could do "evil" editing to jiyoon

Kuro Kurt

The thing you are describing by the very end (regarding generations). The problem with the first generation artist not being active nor big even in nowadays (besides a few ones like BoA) is because their contracts back then were short and for example the reason, why H.O.T. ended (more like split up, which led to H.O.T. not being active without 3 members) and they did not have to sue SM as DBSK did, was purely because their contract was that short (compared to what started to happen with contracts later on (like 10+ years long contracts) before the rule of 7 years was made thanks to JYJ), so they simply did not renew. So obviously because of that not that music got to be released and there was shorter time to get popular and even if you got popular, you might have gotten overshadowed more easily. Plus then the whole aspect of the internet and YouTube + social media started to grow (or in the case of YouTube even exist at all) after the first generation ended. I could continue with this to describe every generation but to make it short... the key factor for acts of the third generation lasting longer is the start of global reach, which led to companies realizing: "Huh... we do not have disband a group if a member does not renew their contract, because that will lead to fans hating on us and we definitely want to benefit from the global reach, so although it will be hard to handle (or not possible to keep the group as active as before), let's give the idols freedom in this and let's let them have their solo elsewhere" And actually this is partially also a factor for why the second generation groups started to have (reunion) comebacks, because nowadays there is a way to make this happen, since the mindset of companies changed. You can see it happening with acts of the first generation too, look at Baby V.O.X for example, but obviously because of what I said above, it does not happen often (or to that many groups) compared to the 2nd or even 3rd generation... Hmm... now reading what I wrote... the biggest benefit the 3rd generation has compared to the previous ones is groups of this generation did not have to go through the whole "being inactive/disbanded" for a long period of time, because this change of mindset of Kpop companies started to happen at the right time for them, so they just "went with the flow". Basically their timing was good.

WiseSmellyLegs

The only thing I am not 100% sure with this arc of Jiyoon is whether Mnet did not get involved into that somehow. She did say at the end that is truly her personality, but at the same time it all felt like… “very well orchestrated” and with really good timing, so it makes me confused how to feel about this.

WiseSmellyLegs

As much as I sometimes think those “Older songs remade for modern/TikTok listeners” are so… hmm… “cheap”, I cannot help myself in the case of Final Love Song and I just love it… I vibe with it so much! Which reminds me to make a statement regarding Yuju… This episode made me think whether they did not put Yuju into Ground to have there someone to lead them and help them and at the same time make it easier for WakeOne find out what is her potential as a leader and also a group member if they wanted/needed to replace someone from the members they knew they wanted to debut… By that I can say Yuju here jumped over Jiyoon and Sarang and took the second place. Also… I was thinking whether LingLing did not have a chance to debut, because her being in the group would bring A LOT of fans from South East Asia. You mentioning Saebi being a baby… that was… well, rather more like it has been the reason for me, why I have never gotten into her as I got into others, who were not my initial picks but made it into the line up. Actually, besides coming back to this show to see Sujung again, I want to focus on Jeemin and Saebi, because these two are the ones, I have not gotten into even after their debut. Regarding the thing of Minsol x Sujung for that part (as Monica pointed out). Sujung was better, but the thing Monica was trying to say was that Minsol had more “idol-ish vibe”, which will be the reason, why Sujung will not make it. One person, who I got to know through online Kpop communities, described it really well that she comes from a dance crew background, which is way more cutthroat and we will get to a point in the show, where Sujung will be canceled by the viewers because of one thing she will say… Based on my notes, Mai got me interested a bit more later on, but watching it now again, I have to admit I am starting to like her way sooner. I am not sure if I can point out someone else right now. As I mentioned before I like Yui, but her moment is yet to come. So… then there is Jiyoon. During watching the show for the first time, I was thinking all the time: “I wonder how much of her behaviour is actually herself and how much of it is “spicied up” by Mnet’s editing and what surprised me by the very end is her having a speech in which she said Mnet actually captured her personality the way she is, which is like… OKAY… And I will be honest… her behaviour made me reconsider her many times and it actually brought a new insight into forming a group. Not that I would not value teamwork and the factor of the members getting on well all together, but I have always focused way more on what each person can bring to the table and make the group stand out. Basically the “LOUD factor”. And then I focused if the combination of the members works or not and the “getting on well/for variety purposes things” were not as important for me as it is after this show and mainly Jiyoon. Actually… the same person, who pointed out the thing with Sujung (they are really into survival shows and they have kind of really good “knowledge”/know-how regarding these survival shows related things) opened my eyes with this, because they mentioned the atmosphere and in general teamwork will be important for the group in the long run. And that made me think… I truly like Jiyoon and despite her being so her the whole show, I could not help myself and I simply liked her singing and there was something unique about her. But then I realized… why does she have to debut in a group or why do I want her in the group? She could be a really great soloist. And sure… debuting solo after having a group career makes your solo way bigger (usually). But I would not want my group to be on bad terms among each other because of that just to have her voice there over someone else’s, which may not be as great, but the atmosphere will be better and technically even the “now not as great member” may get to the Jiyoon level later on… So by all of this I wanted to say that from this episode on I started to question myself, whether Jiyoon is still in my top 5. Well… more like: She is in the top 5 contestants, but is she in the top 5 contestants to debut together in the group?”

WiseSmellyLegs

i liked her since she was kicked i dont remember why but i know that i commented in diferent reactions that i did

Kuro Kurt

In my humble opinion, although they have hours of footage, I think the girl's votes speak for themselves. I think they def would have voted for Jiyoon if they liked her attitude more I think because who the girls vote for can't be influenced by just editing /nm

Ayeyassha

i feel like this was def the kind of drama that made Jiyoon into such a popular contestant. Her struggles were highlighted in a way that seemed real which probably resonated with a lot of people I think (me included). Even though it was something I didn't like seeing, I really enjoyed the way she grew throughout the show. Also I don't know if I would really compare Jiyoon to Jay in the sense that he also had an attitude problem in I-land(at least from what I remember, I dont think he ever practiced like that, on camera at least). They both have big arcs throughout their respective shows which allowed them to be very popular so I can see it.

Ayeyassha

I dunno.....MNET has hours and hours and hours and hours of footage. I honestly believe they could've taken ANY of the girls and spliced together a reel that made them look like they made jiyoon look these first few episodes. They obviously wanted her at least in the discussion for the final group given the amount of screen time. I usually don't take MNET evil editing seriously at all.....at the end of the day, its the singing/dancing/rapping/visuals that count. I mean, sure, chemistry is a thing but these girls are teenagers and NONE of us know whats going on behind the scenes as well

Edward Lee

What's funny is, opposite of how knetz would typically react to that kind of sulky defeatist bad attitude, I think they found it camp and mostly embraced Jiyoon's Grumpy Bear stormcloud arc 😅 Majority of Koreans surprisingly loved her throughout the show, while global fans had issues initially. (I'll wait til later to discuss who knetz ACTUALLY seemed to hate, which might surprise you) I will admit, when I was watching this live, I did not like her at this point in time. I usually don't like "characters" like that. But at the same time, I was also kinda highly amused how over the top she was? (you'll see soon hehe) And like I said in the episode 1 discussion - I started appreciating her in the fact that she does not, in fact CAN NOT lol, hide her emotional reactions. Again, realest person on the show. Now, I would be singing a different tune if she didn't improve and change her attitude over time. (not a huge spoiler since she debuted and there was no controversy around her) The journey of her GROWTH is what makes her great.

Aine

I usually hate seeing drama in survival shows, but the Jiyoon drama kept me wanting more. It feels refreshing rather than seeing some argument over part distribution or members not participating. Her story arc in this show is so fun to watch.

intercrus

Hmm... I only half agree on Jiyoon. I really didn't like her at this point on the show and for a while (but I do now). I wouldn't compare her to Jay's situation exactly either... The issue I had with Jiyoon at this point was she didn't take responsibility for her actions (at least on camera). "I don't want anyone to see me here" or "I feel betrayed" doesn't, to me, show a winner mentality and is honestly more insulting to everyone else--it doesn't feel purely competitive. I do get she is young and that the producers did need some drama though. I'm similar in my emotional intensity and wouldn't easily be able to hide my feelings, but I also would understand the dynamics of the competition and what socially it would take to win (this was me thinking back to my time at that age in competitive sports--not the same level of pressure but the most comparable we have for us normies lol). That said, I would've done the same things I think--not that I would be proud of it looking back. I think the biggest difference for me is Jay used the shame and embarrassment to work harder for his parts quite immediately from what I remember (and he did go to Ground--I think the BTS Fire stage) whereas jiyoon took this episode to sulk during practice and gave off an attitude of 'I don't deserve this' and 'holier than thou' when she did get voted down. That's the part I took/take issue with.

canhui00

oh PD, don't say things like that too quickly. The next round will be split over 2 episodes again.

Sven Lenders

Jiyoon, Jiyoon, Jiyoon…she already had my attention from the group post the show and this episode had me cackling because wow…I can’t believe how popular she is despite this. This is where I was like yeah Jiyoon is that girl and she immediately became my bias after this. I loved how she wasn’t faking it and just showing how upset she was because I would’ve been the same way like…why are you guys trying to comfort me when you didn’t vote for me? I get the attitude thing was a turn off for them but come on…I would be upset too. 😂
