UGH YES IT IS YMGA WHAT! Ahhhhhh I used to love this song

The more I listen to Drama and watch the MV, the more clear it's to me that the song is about the relationship between the artist and the drama chasing media/industry. The MV provokes a lot of emotion, which allows us to peek into his feelings and emotions in the past years. I see loneliness, exhaustion, longing, but the song is not depressing but more about closure to me. It ended with "no more drama" and in terms of the album structure, it flows into something warmer.

I’ve seen a lot of people saying that GD is just not fitting into today standards, like he was left behind and just can’t compete. But I feel like he knows what he’s doing. Too Bad is a calculated choice to both appeal to new K-Pop standards and fans while introducing GD’s signature style. Bringing in someone like Karina is definitely an appeal to a younger audience that recognizes her over him. He’s always been good about his choices in collaboration and all I can see watching this video and listening to the song is GD is doing what he does - knowing what’s trendy but being a trendsetter. He’s just a little cautious in some areas because it has been a long time since he’s released something and Kwon Ji Yong is a hard album to top. Then we have drama which is an artistic track and he’s not even bothering to make it palatable to the younger generation but he is, again, making smart movies. Two things that struck me immediately was the aesthetic and the heavy effects on his voice. Being someone who was actually a teen in the early 2000’s, to me he is bringing two aesthetic points from that era that have not been tapped into yet. Current KPop and culture more largely is doing their dammdest to get this Y2K feel, but a lot of these people were babies then. That dirty white aesthetic is bringing back Marylin Manson vibes, specifically Tourniquet (1999) from his Antichrist Superstar album which is arguably his most iconic era. In general it’s this “twisted toy box” aesthetic that I haven’t seen since then. JRock is also full of it, Malice Mizer and Dir en Grey first come to mind. GD is brining a more mild version, but the reference hit me immediately. And then there is the voice processing. Anyone remember Cher’s comeback album Believe (1998). I know it’s a stretch but as someone from that era it is about as Y2K as it gets right next to Britney Spears’ Toxic (2003). He’s pulling out the Y2K tropes that haven’t been overused yet, so very much doing his own thing while reminding people that he knows what’s up. I honestly would not be surprised if these elements start showing up in the videos of newer artists. It’s always a gamble with trends and trendsetting, but GD is known for being successful with his efforts. Sorry for the novel but there was no way it was going to be short lol.

can’t wait for your reactions to the full album. My favorites are Bonamana and Gyro Drop and those 2 are the only 2 diss tracks if I’m not mistaken.

The most likely Teddy reference that is driving you crazy is actually Teddy’s line from YMGA - What, where you have YG Family members on featuring (although it is slightly altered if that is it). I admit… despite me being sort of OG, I am not that OG to immediately know it by heart, so I looked that up… But again, got you covered 😉🫵🏽 Here you go: https://music.apple.com/cz/album/what-feat-yg-fam-dj-wreckx/1345362244?i=1345362405&l=cs I will keep my longer feedback for the listening party, because there is one “critique”/thing I would have done differently to make the whole album a better experience, but now I cannot say that out loud, because it would sound like I would leave out either Too Bad or Drama. Well… actually I can say I wish there was a third title track, which would have been like Crooked 2.0, I guess it is okay to phrase it like this without saying anything about the whole album. Regarding Drama! It feels so much like Untitled 2014 2.0, but I do not know whether it is because Drama is mainly in English, so I understand more, but the song makes me depressed, so I usually let it play only when I play the whole album. Drama being nearly whole in English is truly an interesting decision, because it is so obvious this title track is meant for the older fans/Korean audience, whereas Too Bad is way more “American market coded” + he has there Anderson .Paak, but he keeps his parts way more in Korean. But somehow it created truly interesting balance for the whole album, also considering the placement of the songs on the album. To Too Bad I will only add that I am not sure if Karina being there is just because of Karina being currently the biggest IT girl of the Kpop scene or because it also references him being under SM very back then as a trainee. Because Wu-Tang Clan logo definitely references him being inspired by them to do hip hop music and in general they are the introduction to him being interested in music on the deeper level. Plus the Teddy reference is obviously a reference to Teddy and OG YG times.

The tag on 6:12 is a movie called dangerous beauty, a movie about a girl who saved her city, but later became the target of an inquisition by the Church for witchcraft.
