Killua is primed to be the perfect heir of the family because Illumi and the other children are either unsuitable (Kalluto & Milluki) or too insane (Illumi). He cannot die as he is too valuable, so it's all about Run, Retreat, Escape, and Not fighting stronger opponents. On the other hand, if Killua fights like Gon, for example, he would not hesitate to give his all in a fight and maybe die somewhere out there. So the training is a form of protection for Killua to prioritize self-preservation first, like Bisque said, it's a form of love, albeit a twisted one.
