Early Access: Tier Ranking Every Epic Boon Feat

For me, the Boon of Speed is better than the Boon of Dimensional Travel on a spellcaster. In combat, if you need to get to the other side of an obstacle or up onto a better vantage point, teleporting is better than walking. But, its pretty situational that teleporting 30 feet is going to be able to get you somewhere that walking 30 feet is not. On the other hand, that 30 feet walking speed is very versatile. Walk forward 40 feet to get in range, cast a spell, then back up as much as you can. That just one example of how 30 feet of walking speed is better than a 30 foot teleport AFTER you cast a spell.

As a DM, I would only allow you to take an Epic Boon when you reach 19th level in one class. If you take more than 1 level of another class, you don't get an Epic Boon.

RAW, it’s pretty clear that you can take an Epic Boon as an ASI as long as you’re a 19th level character or higher. Balance-wise, 16/4 or 12/8 or 12/4/4, etc. are generally suboptimal divisions, and I think they kind of automatically balance out the two Epic Boons. I have a player who’s currently 12 Warlock, 1 Rogue in Eve of Ruin. He’s planning on taking the rest of his levels in Rogue and Fighter to do exactly this, and I have absolutely no issue with it. No Epic Boon feat is as good as the Fighter, Barbarian or Monk capstone, and maybe not the Paladin or Sorcerer capstones, either. And they’re probably not as good as getting 9th level spells. So, maybe the Ranger and the Rogue are better off doing this, but it’s hardly broken.

Awesome list. Get Kelly his chicken nuggets!

To play devil’s advocate for the boon of spell recall, if you recover a spell slot, you now have the chance to recover yet another spell slot from that slot.

I like the idea of an enemy using Dimension Door to get away and then the Tabaxi Monk just sprinting right back next to them.

Good question about the two epic boons. Upon reading the fine print, it certainly appears that, RAW, a character that builds exactly right could get two epic boons. However, doing so locks you out of 9th level spells, and the Capstone features of many classes and subclasses aren't going to happen either. So I'd allow the two epic boons, because I don't think they are inherently better than 9th level spells or some of the more powerful capstones.

Night Spirit is fantastic for a character/homebrew race and class I made. They have darkness once per long rest (like a drow) and are a night predator type thing. It's actually my pfp. But it's great. When it comes to the epic boon thing as a decently long term DM, I think at my table I would ABSOLUTELY let someone who is multiclassing and gets a feat at character level 19 get an epic boon. Can you imagine how sucky it would be to do a character build that fits the theme of your character but because it wasn't as a singular class you don't get an epic boon feat? Just feels like poor taste from the DM.

Does it say Class Level or Character Level

Let’s get, dangerous!

I would allow someone to take an epic boon even if they multi-classed, not two though.

Scott Leturno

Epic Boon is a 19th level feature. If you lock yourself out of that, that's your cost for multiclassing. That's how I rule it

Loving the Darkwing TShirt Kelly has. Was one of my favorites growing up!
