Our latest video is available today for our Patrons: Running Horror Adventures in Dungeons & Dragons!
As a genre, horror is all about eliciting fear. It often overlaps with fantasy, supernatural fiction, and thriller genres, making horror a natural fit in a Dungeons and Dragons game. After all, if you’re playing D&D you’re already exploring a world full of dark magic, evil cultists, demonic entities, ravenous undead, and bizarre monstrosities!
Fear is one of the strongest human emotions; to inspire even a little during a game session makes for a truly memorable roleplaying experience. In games, horror is fun: fear causes thrilling, heart-pumping intensity like nothing else!
However, like so many movies, books, and video games which try to include horror elements, many Dungeon Masters have a hard time delivering this kind of experience. Poorly executed horror feels like a pastiche or parody. A few runaway jokes can turn The Walking Dead into Zombieland. How horror elements are presented makes the difference between Ghostbusters and the Exorcist.
True horror evokes our deepest nightmares, fears, revulsions, and terror of the unknown. Horror reminds us of the monster in the darkness, the creeping doom which lurks just out of sight, and the unfathomable secrets beyond human comprehension.
In this video, we’re going to unmask the monster, and share our tips for running a terrifying horror adventure in Dungeons and Dragons. Let’s get rolling!
