I feel like I say this a lot, but the videos are still coming along (the tornado probe video, Coca Cola replication, and plasma rifle, plus any others I might've mentioned along the way). However, I saw this clip on 'Daily Dose Of Internet' for the second time now, and I'm doing a quick side-quest video to explain it.
According to Daily Dose, the salsa is "somehow producing electricity", and some people actually seem to believe that, with one of the top comments attempting to explain it as a galvanic reaction similar to a car battery. If you've ever played with a lemon or potato battery, you'll know just how little electricity foods tend to produce. I'm sure I'll show what happens whenever salsa is super-charged with electrical energy, just for fun, but I'm betting it won't look like the video.
The effect in the video is almost 100% being caused by a pyrophoric (aka, self-igniting) gas. After experimenting a bit today, I believe the gas is silane, since my tiny phosphine bubbles didn't really auto-ignite. However, if it is phosphine, there is a terrifying possibility that this was actually an attempted murder caught on film and not a hoax! How? Well, metal phosphides (usually aluminum or zinc phosphides) are sold in other countries as rat poison, and when they're added to water or acid (or salsa), they release phosphine. So in theory, somebody might've slipped the poison into the salsa, thinking it'd be discrete, only to find their family members filming the fiery bubbles some time later.
Again, it seems more likely that this was silane, since phosphine doesn't ignite as easily. But where did they get silane? It's actually pretty easy to make: just take magnesium shavings or dust (like some people might have from a machining or auto shop), mix with dry sand or dirt, and ignite to yield magnesium silicide! When added to an acid, the silicide turns into silane, which bubbles out of solution and bursts into bright miniature fireballs.
I'll see about uploading clips from my pyrophoric gas experiments sometime soon! Thank you all again for continuing to support me and my channel, hopefully things pick back up here soon!
