Rachel - Interactive Story - scene 23

Continued from scene 22

Rachel stares at Lawson, takes a deep breath, and says, "I work for the government, well, worked for them. Past tense, I guess. I’ve known about the outbreak for a while. It’s worse than anyone expected."

Lawson’s brow furrows, her jaw tightens, and her stare fixes on Rachel like she’s weighing every word. "I can always tell when people are lying. And you’re telling the truth. That’s what scares me."

Rachel’s attention snaps to movement between the old man’s house and the neighbor’s. Three more infected shuffle into view, their jerking strides carrying them across the lawn, arms limp at their sides, heads twitching with every uneven step.

"Get in," Rachel shouts at Lawson, gesturing to the Jeep.

Lawson hesitates for only a moment before moving to the back, opening the door and sliding in beside Daisy. The girl, half-propped against the seat, blinks groggily and lifts a hand in a lazy wave. "Hiya," Daisy slurs, her voice dreamlike. "You’re the police, yeah? Cool."

Lawson doesn’t respond, her eyes darting back to Rachel.

The old man turns his head, his sunken eyes landing on the infected staggering toward him. His breaths come in short, shallow bursts as panic overtakes him. He looks at Rachel, his voice trembling. "Please, give me mercy. Don’t let them take me."

Rachel’s hand tightens around the pistol at her side. Her jaw sets, her gaze moving between the man and the closing distance of the infected. She…
