The Public Square for October 2025

Attention Citizens!

Your humble servant is currently hard at work writing Video #89, and having a great time.

That may read as sarcasm but it’s not, I’m genuinely having a great time.

What I’m working on began as an 8-10 minute section in the Work video.  I cut this section all the way back in 2023 because it was a pretty long detour and it was not directly related to the subject at hand.  But now in 2025 I’ve finally come back aroun...

Attention Citizens!

The Reform or Revolution? (1830 to 1832) video is out for the public on YouTube, huzzah!

I’m going to pick up where I left off last month, looking over some of my earliest notes and drafts and comparing that to what actually ended up in the final video.  The early version of the video is always very different from the final version of the video, and...

Attention Citizens!

Obviously the Reform or Revolution? (1830 to 1832) video is out on Early Access on Patreon.

If you didn’t know that already… then congratulations, this is a very exciting day it is for you!

I figured that this would be a great opportunity to go back and read over my old drafts for the video, and compare those to what made it int...

It's done!

Reform or Revolution? (1830 to 1832)

Going through and making last minute tweaks took a bit longer than expected, but it's finally finally finally finally finally done. Everything just takes a bit longer when it's almost an hour long, lol. I'm exhausted.

I've got a lot to say about this video, but I'll save some of that for the monthly Newsletter. No more delays, it's Saturday night and I just want this thing posted!

This video will b...

The Public Square for July 2025

Attention Citizens!

Animation continues apace, just yesterday I got through the most difficult and annoying section.  Should be all downhill from here, everything that’s left to do is relatively easy.

One of the drawbacks of having a long-ass video is that it feels like I should be done, I’m sitting on about 40 minutes of animation!  But alas! A bit more to go.

Once I’m done the animation process I’m always mentally (and physically!)...

Attention Citizens:

Happy Friday!

Quick early look at the next video.

This was what I was animating today, people in legislatures screaming at each other, lol.

For the animation, I hit the 50% mark like... literally two minutes ago... so, HUZZAH, mission accomplished.

Going to touch grass this weekend because being locked in the Animation Mines staring at squares all day has got me going a little cross-eyed.

Next Monday I'm back at it with... a crowd ...

Attention Citizens!

I’m finally down in the animation mines, digging away, making… slight progress… every day.

Animation is funny, because at the very beginning the progress is HILARIOUSLY SLOW.  It’s very normal in the early stages to be like “oh, it never occurred to me, but I’m going to need to cut to a new location here…” and then for some reason it takes like 4 hours to design that new location, and then you blink and the whole work day has ev...

Attention Citizens!

There was an election here in Canada, and the good guys won.

I’ve been keeping half an eye on how outsiders in Europe and the United States are talking about the Canadian election, and what they generally do is talk about the new Prime Minister Mark Carney.  That’s fine I guess, but I think outsiders are completely missing the real story of what’s going on here.

Some examples from my own life.

I was in ...

Attention Citizens!

A little housekeeping up front.

Patreon is requiring all creators who are getting paid per-video to switch over to a monthly billing schedule.  No action is required on your part, but I just figured that I’d mention it here just in case anybody missed the news.  I am scheduled to make the switch on June 1st, 2025.  If you’re interested, I’ve explained all of this in more detail over on the 2025-04-15 16:00:07 +0000 UTC View Post

Monthly Subscriptions

Hey guys,

I just wanted to alert everybody that Patreon is having all creators who bill per-video (like me!) switch over to a per-month subscription schedule.  This is a mandatory change, every creator has to do it at some point during 2025.  I’ve scheduled my switch over for June 1st, 2025.

Unfortunately, this will result in a change in your membership.  I’ve listed the changes below.

Q&A

Hey guys,

I'm going to do a short Q&A section for the April 15th Newsletter, so if you have any interesting questions that you'd like to ask feel free to leave them as comments below.

Uninteresting questions are also permitted I guess. There's currently no law against it.

But if I see any this-is-more-of-a-comment-than-a-questions, I will IMMEDIATELY call the police, I swear.

I wanted to talk about why I put THINGS I’VE RECENTLY ENJOYED sections at the bottom of these newsletters.

Attention Citizens!

By far the most common question that I get is “what programs do you use to make your videos?”  Implicit in this question, I believe, is the question “is it difficult to make your videos?”  Or, to put it another way, “would I be able to make videos?”

I’m always happy...

Attention Citizens: I’ve decided to start a little newsletter!

On the 15th of every month, I’ll be sending a newsletter to everybody on Patreon at the $1 tier level or above.  Every quarter, I’ll be making the same newsletter available for free on both Patreon and the Mailing List, starting today, with…this!

I’ve thought about doing a newsletter for a long time, but in 2025, it’s finally happening.

It's finally up, THE JULY REVOLUTION.

To be totally honest, one of the reasons that I like this period in history is that reading about 19th century elections is fun. Unlike the Roman era, you actually get to know the results! You can actually visualize them on screen! Fun! Huzzah!

I've been plagued by technical issues for the last 14 hours, so I can't think of anything clever to say. This video will be released to the public on YouTube in approximately 1 month. I'll be slee...

Got a quick preview image from the upcoming video.

The [REDACTED] election of [REDACTED] resulted in [REDACTED], leading to a period of [REDACTED]. Despite this, [REDACTED] continued his [REDACTED], which caused [REDACTED] to [REDACTED]. Within only a few years, [REDACTED] would [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] would [REDACTED].

Animation is currently 43% done, it shouldn't be too much longer!

All the best! :)

Quickly teasing a preview image from the next video!

This one is a little more spoilerful than normal, but that's okay, you all can handle it.

I'm STUPIDLY excited to be able to accurately represent political parties & factions on screen, holy cow.  After doing so much stuff on Rome, it's soooo satisfying to actually know the results of elections.

I've got 38% of the video animated, it shouldn't be much longer!  Stay strong!

It's here!  Just in time for Labour Day!  Tick-Tock!

I happen to remember precisely where and when it was that I had the idea to explore this topic.  It was January 1st of 2023, and I was reading the book by Juliet B. Schor that I mention in the opening of the video.  I had also read an article years earlier about Medieval French Peasants not working for 6 months out of the year.  My mind was flashing back to that article as I was reading Schor's book, and the c...

ROME, ANTONY & CLEOPATRA, LOTS OF SHENANIGANS.

...I was somehow able to squeeze boats into this one too.  I don't know how.

True story: the other day, my soul left my body as I watched as my cat walk across my keyboard and cancel a 14-hour export.  It's technically 100% her fault that this video wasn't posted yesterday.  I've asked her if she'd like to formally apologize to the viewers, but so far I'm just getting blank stares in response.  I'll keep trying...

FOLKS,

The next video is progressing well, and there PERHAPS MAY BE a boat in it that somebody is VERY RUDE to, NOT NICE.

I'm exactly 43% of the way through animation, and all of the difficult stuff is done.  The only things left to do are all of the maps, and all of the stuff that happens inside of [SPOILER]'s [SPOILER].

Shouldn't be much longer!

Be nice to boats!

FOLKS,

BIG DAY.

ACTIUM.

I made a real effort in this video to be as charitable as possible to Antony, which...in the end it didn't come out to be all that charitable.  Maybe medium charitable.  Room temperature charitable.

Antony did have a bad brain, and there's no getting around that, but I do think that the commentary about him making blunder after blunder in the lead up to Actium is kinda overstated.  In the video I show (or I try to show!) th...

Hmm!

Still pretty early on in the Animation process, but it's chuggin' along.  I like to do all of the "oh God, I can't believe it took all day to animate this" sections first, which is why you're looking at a picture of a boat right now and not... 'ya know... the PowerPoint Presentation lookin' part of the video.  I save that part for when delirium *truly* sets in!
