Zombie Exodus: Aftermath, scene 35

Continued from scene 34

You hop out of the Jeep and raise your M-16 at the captain. His eyes widen as you step closer with the barrel aimed at his head. His right leg looks mangled from the impact of the Jeep, and his foot lies limply at a ninety-degree angle.

"You're going to kill me, you son of a—"

You fire the rifle, heading him high on the head, which flops to the ground. He takes in a last wheezing breath before his body goes still. Staring at his corpse, you see the numerous medals and ribbons decorating his uniform and wonder how many he earned by hurting, destroying, and killing. How many lives has he ruined under false valor?

"We gotta go!" Jesse shouts.

Her words break you from your thoughts, and you look up to see movement from the forest. The infected's thin and ragged bodies make their way from the tree line and rush toward you. The taint of infection shows on their skin, and these must be freshly turned zombies of a later variant.

You climb into the back of the Jeep, and Megan sends it speeding forward. She veers just off the road at the last point you spotted Portland. She maneuvers through the grove of trees but keeps parallel to the main road. As you drive, you spot Steven and Serena lying near the site of the explosion. You keep your eyes on them through the trees, and the glimpses of their body pass like one of the old movie reels you watched in camp maybe a year ago. And then you see it-- a twitching hand. Stephen's hand rises from the ground, and his legs bend at the knee.

"There's your friend," Megan shouts over the engine's roar.

Portland stands by an old Willow tree and waves her hand to guide the Jeep. Megan slows the West Point vehicle to a halt, and you lend a hand to Portland to help her inside. She falls against you and wraps her arms around your back. She kisses your hard on the lips and squeezes you. "I missed you."

"We need to go. Y'all see those mutants running from the woods? I know you did," Jesse says.

The Jeep stays idle as Megan turns to you. We should go back to the West Point camp. We can take that place over."

"Are you nuts, girl-I-don't-know?" Jesse asks.

"I'm Megan, and I used to be a West Pointer. I know those guys left in camp, and I can talk to them. I can make them understand how we can rebuild and turn that place into a good place to live."

"Until more West Pointers show up and take it back," Jesse says.

Portland pulls away from you but holds your hand. "If we go back to that camp, it should be to save the other prisoners. Some of them didn't escape."

You consider all of these options as well as leaving here. You have everyone in your group and the means to drive to the farming community. And then there's Steven and Serena. Could they still be alive?
