Jesse is the first to scramble into the back, and she then turns and takes Cameron by the good hand to help him inside. Steven hops into the passenger seat and grabs the M-16 Megan left over it.
“We have to find Serena and your friend,” Steven says, sliding the M-16’s bolt.
“Portland. Her name’s Portland, and we’re headed to look for them,” you say.
Megan drives down the dirt road, which slides to the left as the forest creeps north. More gunshot fire comes from behind, but none hits close to the Jeep. Steven leans out of the side, staring into the woods, while Jesse sits just behind the passenger seat, her head hanging. She looks worn and tired, though not as bad as Cameron. The hours of being imprisoned have taken their toll. His skin is waxy and pale, his eyes drawn deep and black, and his lips are cracked to show dehydration. If he doesn’t take antibiotics soon, it may be the end of his story.
“Over there,” Steven says and stands from his seat, pointing his rifle at a break in the tree line two hundred meters away.
You turn and spot two figures running at top speed along the road. Portland leads the way while Serena takes the rear, stopping every few feet to fire her pistol back into the woods. More rifle fire sounds from deep in the forest, some striking the dirt on either side of the women.
The Jeep leaps forward, causing you to lean hard over the M-60 machine gun to keep your balance. As you race along the road, you spot a few soldiers breaking from a grove of trees, their rifles raised at Serena. A shot rings out, and you see Serena drop to the ground. Even from one-hundred-and-fifty meters away, you see the gunshot burn through her leg. She crawls a few feet, turns, and fires. One of the soldiers doubles over and collapses into a bush.
“Hold on!” Megan shouts, and you grip the machine gun. The Jeep twists to the left, the side wheels lifting off the ground until it settles and rides into the forest. You look back at the road and spot a tree trunk.
“We have to get to Serena. They’ll kill her!” Steven shouts.
The Jeep slows until it comes to rest. You hear the back tires spin, and dirt flies a few feet behind it.
“Shit. We’re stuck,” Megan says. “If some of you push the back, maybe we can get free.”
Steven leaps out of the side of the Jeep. “I’m going to get Serena.”
You look to the road as four soldiers move onto it, with the captain in the back. They shout at Portland and Serena, who are only ten yards ahead.
