Hello Humans,
Wow. Is it HOT today! πππ
I have the first sketch of a new song, Boat of Wax for your ears today.
I'm thrilled to be able to share something new with you, and this time I think it's a song for Birdeatsbaby.
Feeling very happy to be writing for that project again.
---
It's been a long month - I had many house guests, rehearsals, recordings and even got some decorating done.
It's been kind of busy but beautifully productive, and I feel on the crest of a huge creative wave right now.
I'm in my flow. I'm writing again.

THE MUSIC
So the story behind Boat of Wax is that I became slightly obsessed with a Buxtehude Serenade that one of my students is learning...

It's a simple, slow, baroque piece in E minor, originally intended to be played on organ.
I loved the descending bass lines and chord progressions. It also reminded me a little of Dido's Lament (which Birdeatsbaby covered on The World Conspires).
I took the chord progression and wrote it out...
...and then rearranged it.
Taking just my favourite parts.

After singing it around the house for a few days the melody and lyrics started to form.
Then it was back to the piano to mash the whole thing together and there you have it.
Here is the finished result:
I may end up extending it, adding further verses and harmonies but for now it is just as it is.
Enjoy.
THE LYRICS
As soon as I started writing this I realised it reminded me of The Sailor's Wife (from Birdeatsbaby's Feast of Hammers), which is all inspired by water.
I'm not sure sure why I began this concept, it sort of just tumbled out.
I guess Boat of Wax is written about watching someone slowly melt into the ocean. The viewer stands on the shoreline, too far away for the raft to hear.
Perhaps the person on the boat is self-sabotaging as the final line suggests, or perhaps it has a deeper meaning. I'm not sure
What do you think?
---
I was watching
From the shoreline
You on your boat of wax
At each morning
The sunβs returning
You smooth over the cracks
The day is breaking
Over the same things
We pushed under the waves
The signal flashing
The wreck collapsing
And no souls to be saved
So I keep watching
From the shoreline
You on your boat of wax
My night star martyr
Kiss the salt water
Set, and strike your match
---
That's it from me for now.
Tomorrow I will have a juicy Video Blog. Don't go anywhere!
