Feline, Festivals and Feminism.

Hi guys,

I’m writing from the road. 

I’m in the middle of a short UK mini-tour I’m doing with Feline & Strange, my favourite Berlin based musicians. Last night we played in Edinburgh, which incidentally is where we met almost one year ago to the day.

Since then we’ve been constantly chatting, laughing, dancing and most importantly - making music together. Our first duet was Cassandra’s Twin, an epic, apocalyptic, operatic song between two sisters. We made a music video in the snow. Read the blog here in case you missed it. It was funded by YOU GUYS, so thank you for making that happen. 

Anyway, as you can see we are still collaborating and touring together, last month you heard an acoustic version of The Wall, the real deal is coming soon…

Anyway, I love Edinburgh. Last time I was here with Simon my manager, and we made a Patreon only stop-frame (patron only) music video for my solo song You Drown With Me, which you can watch here.

This month, everything seems to be about feminism. I am on tour with political feminist artists, our video release for “Better Man” is an empowering “peaky blinders” themed story about domestic abuse and gender assumptions. I also completely coincidentally did an interview with DEVOLUTION MAGAZINE on feminism and what it’s like to be a female in the music industry… a topic that comes up time and time again.

You can read the interview here. I’m not sure if I sound babbly or not. I was pretty hyper-active that day. Let me know what you think. I hope it has a positive impact.

This one is exciting! I’m re-recording a Birdeatsbaby version of my accordion song “Desert of Nevada” (Andreas I know this is a favourite of yours haha). This version was original recorded as a collaboration with Anna Rest Easy, and can be listened to here. Now, I’m adding drums, extra vocals, strings and bass… it’s going to be awesome.

My Flamingos will be getting the cover art of Better Man as a beautiful print (featured as the cover photo) The artist is Renée Chio, do go and check her out, like her page, send her a message/comment to say how much you love her art - trust me, as artists we need to hear these things, it keeps us going. The concept behind the art in Renée’s words: 

“I instantly recognized Madonna's words in your description (that speech was wonderful) and it also made me think of all the actresses and musicians that have gone through the same situation for decades, so I drew a lady who's glamorous but tough, womanly and manly at the same time. The spotlight only reveals what she wants them to see, but underneath she's still a woman, she's naked, vulnerable.”

The artwork pretty much sums up the song perfectly.

I’m doing an Emberhoney cover this month of one of my favourite songs of all time “Rain My Kisses Down”. Sometimes I prefer to do covers of bands that I am connected to, and not ones people have already heard of. If you didn’t know already, Taylor is a true artist and a friend of mine - the music she creates is sublime so go and listen here.
