I'm not entirely sure on how it works, but I have a rough idea. The motor has 3 wires which it alternates supplying power to when rotating. Then when in regenerative braking mode, the motor produces an AC voltage back into the speed controller, which is then converted back into DC to charge the battery. There should be a few videos on YouTube about how it works in a car, which is the same as my bike. Using the fans would probably be counter productive as I reckon the fan size required to produce a useful amount of power would add more drag than the power it produces.

Despite someone answering, I'm still not clear how it actually works! (Not being any kind of engineer!) Also, I've often wondered whether some small fans attached to the bike could provide a charge to the battery, utilising the airflow generated by forward motion. Would that extend the range?
