Topographical Lines

This is a fun procedural setup in After Effects based on a Photoshop tutorial from TextureLabs.

Hi everyone! Thanks as always for your support. Here is a fun procedural setup in After Effects based on a Photoshop tutorial from Brady over at TextureLabs. He's always got some great ideas, and I wanted to play around with this one. In fact, it also inspired me to start making a plugin that does this nearly instantly—obviously that's quite a different process 😂—as I've always loved that line effect from the Joy Division Unknown Pleasures album. Keep an eye out for that at Element Supply Co.

Back to the project file, there's a readme, but basically you just need to open up that second After Effects file, throw an image into the Image comp and a depth map into the Depth comp, and you're set. There are Essential Property options in the Final comp on the Lines layer to adjust the displacement. Obviously with horizontal lines, the vertical setting does the most work, but there is a horizontal option that can clean up the edges in some cases. Oh and if you want it more/less dense, duplicate or remove layers in the line comp.

Anyway, have fun!
