Tutorial 178: Biometric Scanner

Hi guys! It's been a tough week. I thought we'd have to skip, but it looks like we've avoided that once again!

In this week's tutorial, we grab a character from Mixamo, bring it into Cinema 4D, and then bring that into After Effects to treat it with a scanner look. We're using the Grid effect combined with Card Dance to make boxes that outline the character's features.

You can find the M1911A1 model we used at GrabCad. To make the moving background, check out Tutorial 148: Tech Backgrounds. For the circle nodes, Tutorial 167: Intro to Nodebox will get you to where you need to be. And Tutorial 175: Looping Noise shows you how you can make the x-grid background. The technique is similar, but the expression on SourceText is different because we know the exact amount of characters we need.

line = text.sourceText.repeat(96);
txt = '';
for(i = 0; i < 54; i++) {
txt += line + '\\\\n';
}

txt;

And that's it. I hope you guys have fun with this one. There's a lot of possibilities for using this technique, and there's a lot of character rigs on Mixamo to experiment with!

Hi Paul! Unfortunately we’re not Blender users. We’re heard and seen great things though. I don’t think integration to AE in this manner is possible but I’m not certain. That said, for methods like these you can just render videos out. I know Sergei over at Ukramedia uses Blender and I just saw a tutorial pop in on a notification from them a couple of days ago so it might be a good idea to check with him. As for FPS, we generally work in 24. It’s easy to convert for TV in various formats. For anything that won’t be broadcast FPS is less relevant but we find 24 still has a good feel for animation. So, unless we have specs that require something else, we stick to 24. I hope that helps!

Also, as long as I'm making a wish list... I get confused about the FPS for animations like this in AE. If at some point you could explain your choice in FPS for different types of animation projects, that would be extremely helpful.

Thanks! Do you ever do anything in Blender 2.8 as opposed to Cinema 4D? I've chosen Blender 2.8 as the 3D program I'm learning, and would welcome any tutorials that involve importing from Blender 2.8 to After Effects. (Seems that 2.8 is an entirely different world from 2.79).
