Tutorial 160: Procedural Mechanical Animation

I was able to get this one out today because we're waiting on a few of our clients for various parts of our jobs, so I took advantage of the time to get this one out early for you guys! Hopefully one day we'll be able to do this more consistently as Workbench grows! Thanks for your support as always!

This week, we look at a technique for splitting up parts of a precomp using a luma matte. This basically makes a puzzle out of it which allows us to animate each section step by step to produce a mechanical-style animation. And since we built it entirely from one precomp, we're able to put whatever we want in there and keep the same animation.

This can be expanded further using Master Properties so that you can more easily make multiple comps. You could even use Master Properties to make variations of the procedural effect itself so that no two animations are exactly the same. Linking all of the text to Master Properties and building the full look of the example are handled in the BTS available for patrons.

These posts where we announced tutorials were for the general public. If you search for 160, you'll find the project file post but I'll DM you a direct link. They're usually right next to each other in the feed.

How can I get the Project files!

Sameh Al Rahbi

Hi Aaron! All of our files are paid for monthly. This one is from January of last year. I understand the confusion with how Patreon is set up but I have a conundrum. If I delete these posts, it looks like we just started our Patreon, but if I leave them it's confusing. I think I'm just going to go back and remove all of the old posts to remove the confusion and see what happens. I'd just open up all files, but then I'd be giving things to new people that long-time patrons had to pay for. Anyway, I don't mind sending codes so check your inbox in a few minutes!
