Steven Jones NAU Trial. Early Access.

Thanks for being patient on this one. It was quite a large trial to get through. I may make some slight alterations to this for the public release, but they'll only be tightening some of the transitions between clips up. The video won't change from this in terms of the information within it or how it's presented.

As always, keen to hear your thoughts on this one seeing as it has the potential to be very divisive. I'll likely take it out of early access sometime this weekend.

I also wavered in my conviction about him as it went on. This is a difficult one: both sides seem to have been at fault and things quickly spiraled out of control. I can understand why the first jury was hung (even if i do think a lot of what he said was... let's call it an exaggerated version of the truth).

Matt Orchard is absolutely the best!

Yeah, I know what you mean. I think in this instance, and definitely in the Hannah Payne case (The girl who chased the truck driver) when they get to the stand they've been heavily coached on what to say and how to say it. Because they're not trained actors, what results in all of us watching getting this sense that nothing being said is true. It's a major problem I think people who take the stand in their own defence face.

I by no means am trying to change your opinion, I actually agree for the most part but I did notice something throughout his testimony. It sounded as though he were coached to say the "right" things for self defence. I found myself wondering over and over, I wonder how I would feel about him if he were allowed to testify to the truth of what he experienced and felt that night.

Thanks, Kevin. These trials do take a fair amount of time and effort and it's always nice to read that is apprecated :)

That sounds terrifying. In Australia, at least where I grew up and learned a lot of hard lessons, we definitely don't have the fear of guns but that comes with another issue. People are more inclined to get into these escalating conflicts where punches are thrown, people get mobbed and because there's no "weapons" the beatings can be quite savage. Often leaving lasting problems for the people who don't walk away too well. I definitely don't think guns are the answer, but the real issue is aggression and how to manage it.

I can only imagine how that might feel if your'e a father. Those childhood photos left a huge impact on me as well. It really drives home the point that this kid was raised, loved and was deeply cared for by his parents. I can't imagine having all of that in my memories and then they're just... gone one day.

Seeing childhood photos of the victims in your videos has always made an impression on me, but now that I am a new father, they are far more impactful and devastating. Thank you for your continued respect you show victims.

This is another great example of the problem with our gun culture in the US. If someone is threatening to punch or otherwise insults you somehow it makes sense to escalate all the way to shooting a bunch of people? Obviously not everyone here thinks that way but so many I've met have this "don't fuck with me OR ELSE" attitude, proudly, and they don't see it as a potential problem at all.

You’re the best Dave, I admire your work ethic. I hope people appreciate how much effort this takes: your trial edits always blow me away with how seamlessly you weave the narrative together. Bravo!

I find Steven's testimony to be extremely unreliable, and I'd go further to say that I think he's a liar who was trying his best to make everyone see him as the besieged hero of this story. Testifying in your own defense really is one of the worst things you can do: before I listened to his (what I believe to be) lies, I thought he was an angry kid who made a rash, stupid decision when he was angry. Afterwards, my view of him was far more negative. None of what he said lined up with the majority of witness statements, and didn't make much sense anyway: who charges into a flashlight that's blinding them? I think Steven is a liar who refuses to take responsibility for his actions and would rather paint his victims as the ones who were in the wrong.

I'm only an hour in and I find Steven's testimony to have no credibility. I think this case fits in right with Lee Rodarte, Michael Dunn, and your recent case whom I've forgotten involving the woman and the driver of a truck. It's almost the same style of speaking and language, feigned victimhood but also the belief they aren't in the wrong. I'll have to see if my opinion changes.
