Next video, Early Viewing, Q&A, and Streams

Hey everyone! I'll try to be brief.

First off: the Q&A stream has been postponed until next weekend because of a doctor's appointment for both of our boys. I've updated the Q&A post with the new info and time. It's next Saturday. We thought about pushing it forward to tonight instead but we don't think that'll work. We got short notice for the appointment and would prefer not to do the same to you.

Secondly, there should be a video sometime next week. It's not the 2017 Review video I had planned for next because now I'm so deep into Persona 5 that I think I should finish it before I look back at the whole year. I think it'll earn a place in 2017's top ten games. I think that makes sense. Maybe I should knock out a playthrough of Horizon first too so I played all the big ones that interested me.

The next video will mark the first that will be released without Early Viewing. I looked for solutions to keep it going but unfortunately there aren't any that can be safely done since there are lots of email addresses to manage. YouTube's private system for adding accounts was also starting to break after adding hundreds to the Odyssey video last time. It's unfortunate but there's no workaround that I know of. If this changes, I will reinstate the Early Viewing.

If anyone has any ideas for potential new pledge rewards then please let me know. The one dollar tier does have some more value than it originally did now with Discord roles, Discord Patreon chat, and the voting to play stream games, but Early Viewing was a good one. I'm sorry that I couldn't make it work.

Speaking of streams I know that some people are upset that I seem to be doing that so much. I'm still putting many hours into video work. I think the issue that people have with it stems from how that work is invisible until the video is released. It can appear like all I'm doing is streaming. One thing I'd like to say is that I am a video game critic and because of that I have to play a lot of games. If I wasn't streaming them, I would have to play these games anyway. I've gotten a great amount of "research" benefit out of playing so many titles I otherwise wouldn't have had time for yet. Especially Terraria and Undertale. It's also embarrassing that I haven't played some big games like Doom 2016 or any Persona game until now. To be critical of myself, there are some other big gaps in my experience I need to fill.

Essentially I'm trying to say that I would be doing all of this anyway, no matter what order the games are in or when I got around to playing them. Streaming them, and subsequently making so much more content, should really be a big positive. Twitch also doesn't make nearly as much money as ad revenue on YouTube, which itself is far behind Patreon pledges here. The streams help to avoid being dependent on just these sources but it's not a big enough draw all on its own.

I just hope that people understand that it isn't taking up all of my time. I think how well the Odyssey video turned out proves that but I still worry. Big videos take a lot of effort both for production and recovery time afterwards--not to mention dealing with the ever increasing response to many releases. The main thing that has slowed everything down lately has been our children getting older and demanding a LOT more time and energy. But that's not your problem and I shouldn't be complaining.

That's it! The next video should only be a minor surprise. I wasn't going to do it yet but I decided to focus on something that just came out to see how it goes, and the writing went well. Hope you like it.

2. Would you consider doing more live-event streams like you did with the Game Awards? That was honestly one of my favorite streams you ever did. I know it's going to be less convenient now with not having as many scheduled streams but I know I'm not the only one interested.

1. Joe and Lili - Do you ever think about what you're going to be like when you're old?

I personally don’t enjoy streams at all. I would rather watch edited videos that show the talent of the content creator. I can play a video game on my own. I have definitely felt shafted by the near-constant streams posted to your second channel, but I also know that your channel is more of a “it happens when its ready” instead of a regular upload channel. I do appreciate that. I think more regular updates on Patreon about videos would alleviate the issue of long wait times between each. I know a lot of people like Discord and you probably post regular updates there, but I think updates on the website where we actually submit payments would be good for us viewers that wait (impatiently) for new videos

Would you consider setting up a Patreon only forum that would allow us to vote on questions asked towards you? I am in the "Text Q&A > Stream Q&A" camp. I understand that the amount of questions you are receiving is far too high but I think most of us are here for articulated and in-depth answers from you.

Also, if we can't have early viewing, can we at least have the early script?

I'm not worried about streams. I think you should delay 2017 until your comfortable. Tbqh I don't care about the rewards all that much - I support so your work can continue, not for the perks.

At this rate the 2017 review is gonna come in 2019

I'm glad you posted an update regarding streaming and the frequency of it. I would like to share my point of view. I don't much care for the streams, as i like structured content alot more. It seems like there are announcements every day about streams, which makes me feel like that's where the focus is. Now i know you touched on this in your post just now, and i am very satisfied with your response. I think the issue here from my point of view is that there has been complete radio silence for the people who only follow you for the youtube content. I don't really mind a video taking 4 months to complete, as long as i have some sort of update about the video or confirmation that the video is indeed being made. Hope that made sense. Your videos are great, and every time i see an upload i instantly make time to watch the entire thing in one go.

What's wrong with leaving early viewing as just an unlisted link? It [the leaking] doesn't really bother me as a patron, I still feel like I'm getting special treatment. If it is negatively impacting the video in some way I understand though

Losing EV access is dissapointing, but understandable. Maybe a solution will pop up in the future, but if not it’s not the end of the world. Otherwise looking forward to the new video (seems like it’s maybe on Celeste?)

I never really considered early viewing much of a perk because I could only get around to watching the video the day after anyway. Seems way too much of a hassle to get the early viewing working anyway so not much of an issue. A discord tag is a decent reward for $1 tier I feel

If you wanted to keep up some form of Early Viewing, you could just put the videos up unlisted and link/embed them in a patron-only post, then switch the video to public later. Obviously people could get around paying if someone shared the link, but it would allow you to keep the perk going.

It sucks that early viewing had to be cancelled, but I guess when you have too many patreons at that level a tiny amount of them are going to ruin it for everyone else. I guess that's why other patreons have the EV 'tier' at a higher donation level, which helps to reduce the risk of this due to a combination of less people + more financial investment in not fucking up the tier reward for everyone.

That's a lot of news, Joe. Much appreciated. Thanks!
