our scarborough trip didn't go to plan
Added 2024-04-23 09:10:18 +0000 UTCA couple years back, I made a video of me walking around parts of the town and shooting film photos. The plan was to keep visiting and put more videos together. Why Scarborough? It's my home town and I have a complicated relationship with it - it's one place that can effortlessly crank the anxiety dial in me to eleven. I'm trying to figure it out, but I ultimately want to associate Scarborough with a bit more positivity in my life.
That's not to say it's not a good place. I/we have friends and family there, and we do our best to see them as often as we're able to given that we now live in a different country.
But I also want to put in the effort to make certain videos with a bit more consideration (such as not relying on my phone, and using my video rig for example), and that takes time. As it happens, the weather was dreadful 90% of the time we were down, and obviously trying to keep up with family in of itself is fairly chaotic - and I just couldn't get into it. I filmed stuff regardless (and I'm glad I did), but in the moment I felt like it was all a complete fucking waste of time.
I barely took any photos (I used two thirds of a roll, and I packed six).
By accident, the video presents itself as a document of the mundane. Mental health funk, anxiety, someone took issue with me photographing their car (I didn't), and our car tire exploded, but also the quiet & the still moments, walking the dogs, being with Robyn.
All things considered, I'm glad I put this together, and it's all a valid part of what Scarborough is to me.
