George Floyd and Derek Chauvin - As it Happened and How it was Argued

Thanks again so much for your patience and support everyone! Here is your early Premiere!

I’d be really interested in feedback on this one, especially in terms of the length. I know it’s long but after several shave downs I think this is about as short as I can get it while faithfully conveying the core arguments of the prosecution and defence teams. Let me know if you felt there were areas it dragged though. Maybe there will be parts I can find to cut down a bit further and this will double as the early premiere and extended cut!

I also appreciate it may not be a fan favorite for some - first time breaking down a trial (which is very different from an interrogation) and it’s one of the most well known stories of the past year so it doesn't have those narrative twists and turns a lot of my vids have. I still hope you like the presentation and get value out of the case being broken down.

I shared this on every platform I could when you released it, even when they attempted to suppress it. Excellent work, and just as confronting as it should be.

Stel

10/10 job. It was a long watch and difficult subject, but you really did it justice. Holtzclaw coverage, too. I hope you stick around for a long while, you're a huge talent!

Ryan Allen

You’re the man. Appreciate the matter of fact presentation.

Thanks Ian!

Thank you Emily!

Matt Orchard

I also immediately joined the patreon after the George Floyd video, just so much work and thought put into these documentaries and I so appreciate how well researched and presented they are

Emily Chirnside

You’re awesome, I’ll be staying and waiting with baited breath for the next one. Take your time you deserve it.

Liz (nikeeweston)

Thanks for the kind words and support Liz! Welcome aboard!

Matt Orchard

I’ve become a patron because it’s a way I can say thank you for your most recent video. 2 hours of pure genius, of astonishing research and I’m sure hours or you going over and over whether you should include something or not, or do you make it 2 hrs or not. This video should be shown to law students. It’s so good. Very unbiased. I thought your last video was amazing.

Liz (nikeeweston)

I found it very ironic in a tragic way, that the defender started to have problems articulating himself towards the end in this case. There is a known effect, that watching someone else having trouble breathing or speaking will cause yourself to start to have the same troubles. Somehow George Floyd's tragic end got to that defender more than he probably wanted to.

Jeff

I definitely got that message too but thought you hid a 'tskst' in there to Derek, but reading it back it doesn't even make sense haha too excited for the new video I guess. Keep it up man.

Josh Evans

I honestly don't know much about it -but the case is MN vs Mohamed Noor. Here's the wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_of_Justine_Damond#Mohamed_Noor

Kailee C

Thanks! Interesting about the black police officer too. What was the case?

Matt Orchard

I joined patreon because I couldn't wait! Awesome content as always! I also enjoy your longer videos -although I'm sure they're much more time consuming to make so I appreciate any work you put together! Great stuff!

Kailee C

Chauvin was the first white police officer in Minnesota's history to be charged and convicted of murder committed on the clock. The *only* other officer charged with murder in Minnesota while on shift was a black officer who killed a white woman. That happened in 2017. Needless to say- officers being charged and convicted while engaging in abuse of power/ misconduct while on the job is a VERY difficult thing. This is because of the power of the police union. I'm almost inclined to say if there wasn't an ample amount of video recording from every angle possible the MPD would not have been so willing to take the stand with their testimony.

Kailee C

Love your channel Matt!

Your work reaches a new level! I really like that you put some warnings for very heavy part and that you give a positive vibe in the end of the video. Timing is perfect and as usual, most important things are highlighted. Thank you. I can't wait to see this video on YouTube and to read users comments. Have a great day 🌷

Vitalina Kibirina

Thanks for the reply Matt - love the insight and the obvious research you have done.

Yann Le Maitre

I see your point - it makes good sense. I can see where captioning only Floyd’s utterances could be viewed as partiality. So glad you’re enjoying the Behavior Panel - they have great chemistry and terrific insight. 👍🏼👍🏼

Sensational! Love the coverage. The length was perfect.

I'm just going off of what I've heard here. Chauvin was, I believe, the first police officer in Minnesota's history to be convicted of murder for something he did on the job. Obviously there is a lot of talk out there about that highlighting how corrupt the system is, and maybe that talk is totally on point. For me to really make a call on it though, I'd need to pull up a bunch of cases where a cop went to trial and got off, or perhaps more importantly didn't even go to trial, and see if there were genuinely mitigating circumstances. The "was a part of his job as a police officer" part of Chauvin's defense will be a defense used by just about any police officer that goes to trial for something they did on the job. It is exceedingly rare for the top brass to line up for the prosecution, however.

Matt Orchard

Thanks man! I will look closely at the break down section when I'm giving it a final go over with that note in mind. I MIGHT not add more captions though, here's my (probably over thinky) reason. Although if we're being honest there really isn't two ways to look at that episode past a point, because the case is hyper-politicized I'm trying REALLY hard to keep that breakdown as JUST THE FACTS. Now obviously what Floyd says IS a fact, but if I drew special attention to every instance of him saying "I can't breathe" for instance, it might be perceived as me trying to force the viewer's hand. The captions that are in there are there to highlight key moments. So his final word - "Momma" is incredibly tragic but it's highlighted not for that reason, but merely to point out at what time words stop. Thanks for the feedback though, as I said I will think seriously about it and see if there are other opportunities to caption things from an objective POV. I've been really enjoying The Behavior Panel on slow YT evenings btw!

Matt Orchard

Totally agree! 👍🏼👍🏼

I appreciated your sentiment at the end, Matt. As viewers, we choose how to respond - intellectually and emotionally - to your work. Your decision to put a positive cap at the end of a tough video is welcomed.

ReSearcher

It wasn't actually a joke! But I can see how it would be perceived as sort of wry - which is fine as an interpretation. I put that in there instead of the usual "Thanks for Watching" because I felt like the whole case is just such a waste of life in more ways than one and it was a better sort of closing message than "lol, rot in hell pig!" Rather than trying to find some joy in the misery of Chauvin going away for a long time, learn from his example of how to not go through life and do something compassionate for someone.

Matt Orchard

Hey if it wasn't too long then that's good to know too!

Matt Orchard

2 hours passed as if they were 30 minutes. Really great of you to both summarize the entire case and also break it down and explain it in your own words. Good job as always Matt :)

Sonne

Hi Matt, nice video, enjoying your work. Curious on this point, - how does the police testimony and overall defense compare to similar policies abuse/manslaughter/murder trials? Anyways, love the work let me know if you need an assistant 😂

Yann Le Maitre

Matt!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The only constructive feedback I have is to perhaps add subtitles to George Floyd’s utterances. I think that would add more impact to what he said and how many times he said it. Other than that, you have my overwhelming gratitude!

Aye Matt - I Laughed at 'Try to do Something Kind for Someone Today.' in case you were hoping someone would notice ;D

Josh Evans

This video is awesome! I don’t watch TV or listen to radio or do any media whatsoever so it was really cool getting exposed to the case for the first time in this way and was well worth the wait too! I’m so happy with your work on this video Matt Orchard! I knew you would get this topic right without any sensationalism like all the rest so I refused to research it until I got the email. Both the prosecution and the defense did stellar jobs going back and forth and gave me the exciting feeling like watching Game 7 of The World Series. Thank You for this and especially the Holtzclaw video! Keep up the marvelous work bro 😇❤️

SHAUN BAILEY

You took something that could easily be a mundane and quite bland video analysis and made it something ensnaring and captivating. I appreciate the brief introduction at the beginning of what to expect from the video, it helped me enter the right mindset! As per usual, 10/10!

Madison

This is a masterpiece! Definitely the best video you've made by far!!!...I think the length is perfect and it giver you time to break down everything throughly...keep up the good work and you'll always have my money.

Tim Sheridan

Okay I know I’m spamming the comments, but this is the best video you’ve made. In fact it might be one of the best criminal trial analysis videos on the internet. If YouTube let’s you keep this, it’s going to get absolutely massive. I think the defence cross examination of the confident dr with the accent was an absolutely damning moment. He must’ve been feeling the pressure of the fact that he was facing a major loss. The accent apparently threw him off too. The prosecution was absolutely excellent. What a stunning performance and perfectly executed prosecution. Very big props on this video Matt. I’m glad I threw in for the Patreon because you 100% deserve it.

Matthew (Zei)

In regards to length - I listen to your stuff while working mostly, so the longer the better!

Josh Evans

His last word was “momma”. That made me cry. I’m not usually one to be so emotional and part of it could be that I’ve been awake for 30 hours... but damn.

Matthew (Zei)

What a great fucking video! Hats off.

Josh Patterson

Shiiiit man I’ve seen the video before but even 15 minutes in, it’s distressing. The guy was clearly no threat at any point in time. Passive resistance yeah, but you don’t see him attack any of those low life cops. Absolutely uncalled for.

I waited checking every hour in my emails and was very delighted when the notification popped up unexpectedly tonight...you didn't disappoint! Bloody ripper of a job on this one mate!!! 💗💗💗 Worth the wait.

I think the longer videos really, really bring out the best in your content. I love your work, thank you so much for this post!

rapinchie

I know you probably are looking for more constructive feedback since this was different than your usual content, but honestly you nailed it. I have nothing but good things to say about this video and how you handled the delicate subject This is some of your best work and even with the length of the video you were rather concise throughout. Thanks for the content Matt, 10/10

MyNameFits

Hello, Matt! Thanks for your work! I just want to say that this video is really difficult to watch. I have a headache... (corrected: heartache) 💔
