Update/AMA

Hey Guys!

The next video "George Floyd and Derek Chauvin - As it Happened and How it was Argued" is coming along very nicely but is still probably several days to a week away. I really like to get one main video and some kind of bonus out each month but this particular one has just been a real grind to put together for a variety of reasons. Thank you as always for your patience and support.

I figured in the meantime what I could do as a thank you is a good ol' fashioned Ask Me Anything thread. Questions about old cases, my process, music, farm animals, whatever really. I'm going through the horrible process of putting the voice over together now so it'll be a welcome distraction for when I need to take a breather! I'll continue to check this post until the next video is posted so there's no rush!

EDIT: I just shared the first 40 seconds on twitter if anyone wants a teaser :) https://twitter.com/RealMattOrchard/status/1389432447893315584

Cheers, I'll put it in the doc

Matt Orchard

people including yourself compared you to Jim cant swim and I disagree, your content is way more fact, research-based, and more entertaining to say the least, Keep up the good work sir

Shack

@Matt Orchard, may I make a suggestion? looking into doing a video on the Krugersdorp appointment killers from south Africa, what makes it so fascinating is its a group of people of whom are mostly big men but the ones running the show was two freaky woman, it's honestly one of the wierdest yet fascinating cases I have seen, as the one woman daughter and son were also active in the group and at the height of the murders the daughter was writing final exams in matric for which she received distinction in almost all subjects.

Shack

I guess the degree of focus is just elevated. I appreciate the thoughtful response.

Matt Hart

I haven't found that I enjoy making videos less as I get better at making them, each project is kind of a new world. What I will say is quite a lot of the process is inherently not enjoyable, so I haven't liked parts of it from the start. Figuring out what the next topic is can be very anxiety inducing. Researching and writing can be fun but at other times very frustrating. Putting voice overs together is just torture sometimes. Putting the video itself together is often quite fun - but again there's really painful moments. It's seeing the final product that I'm really passionate about.

Matt Orchard

If it’s not too late, I have a question. Sometimes I feel like as I gain expertise in a skill, I proportionately lose the feelings of escape/magic that made me fall in love with it in the first place. So, my question for you is this: As you get better and better at making these videos, how do you maintain the same love for the process?

Matt Hart

Ohh I got it! Yes, sometimes I use auto-generated ones, true.. Thanks a lot anyway! Can't wait to see your next masterpiece 😉!

Vitalina Kibirina

Thanks for the information Matt. Cant wait for your emai reminder that your video is done.. your videos are what i looked forward to the most out of all entertainment

Billy Cardinale

I don't know specifically what JCS are doing outside of videos (I've never asked) but I understand that they do have other stuff going on outside of it and whatever that stuff is obviously means enough to them personally or is sufficiently lucrative for them to sacrifice a good amount of Patreon revenue. They aren't gone though. The turn around time has just gotten significantly longer between vids. I know that they're actively working on another vid right now and have other topics lined up after that. Can't give a time frame though.

Matt Orchard

Thank you!

Matt Orchard

Ahh, subtitles. You're not the first to ask! Unfortunately subbing a whole video is just a lot more work than I think some people estimate (one commenter even told me it would just be a few hours more work once!!!). Manually transcribing everything said in an hour long video and then lining that up with the words as they're spoken could literally add weeks to a vids prod time which I just can't afford. Subbing my own VO would be easier as it's already written of course but then people who don't want text on screen all the time would complain. Sorry! But if you haven't already, have you tried just turning on YTs native captioning? It's honestly pretty impressive - even gets most of interrogations right!

Matt Orchard

I cant wait Matt.. Thanks for all the hard work. Do you know what happened to JCS? Why would he disappear like this? He was making at least 50k a month..

Billy Cardinale

Not really a question just want to give you props for making such consistently good content, especially as a solo (from what I can tell). Just please keep it up while you are enjoying it ✌️

Josh Evans

Thanks for the answer, Matt!

Vitalina Kibirina

The case of Holtzclaw is so unrealistic and harsh! It's also one of my favorite. By the way, do you think it's possible to add a subtitles for your videos? Some of terms and definitions are not familiar to me ;( maybe and for other as well?

Vitalina Kibirina

Holtzclaw. Main reason being I put so much effort into it so you’re always going to have a soft spot for something that has a piece of your soul in it lol. Plus the case is inherently fascinating. Only thing that sticks in my craw is I made it before I’d gotten my head around some of the prod side of things, particularly audio, so it sucks that my baby is a bit rough around the edges in some ways. My fav since getting my shit together in that regard is Haggard/Edwards because I always felt like those PR disasters were less infamous than they should be so it was cool to get to introduce my audience to those crazy stories.

Matt Orchard

Hello, Matt! What is your favorite video what you created on a channel and why?

Vitalina Kibirina

No, I've heard of them though. I'll give them a go.

Matt Orchard

Matt - have you checked out The Behavior Panel on YouTube?? 4 different experts in Body Language & Behavioral Analysis. One of them is Mark Bowden from the U.K. They’re really interesting.

ReSearcher

Thanks! I actually have no formal training in psychology, criminology or anything like that. This isn't to say I'm a poser because frankly there is very little psychological analysis in my videos! I think people sort of trick themselves into thinking there is because of the JCS association but next time you're watching one just look out for it and you'll see what I mean. Stuff is pointed out, context is explained, but technical psychology terms? Not a lot. This is even true of quite a lot of JCS videos! There is SOME - the psychological drive behind denial in the Palma vid, a little bit of Statement Analysis in Larry Nassar, but that stuff isn't rocket science and is easy enough to google and just pick up if you watch the sort of material people who are in to this sort of stuff are prone to watching. I usually stay away from body language because I'm relatively skeptical of it. There might be *something* to it but it feels dangerous using it as a real barometer for innocence or guilt.

Matt Orchard

Heyo, greetings from Latvia! I got recommended your videos on YouTube after getting into JCS. Although you marked the earlier ones as a parody of Jim's, I think they're every bit as good. Different, but great. Could you give an overview of your knowledge on psychology as a whole (psychology, psychiatry, body language, etc.) - do you have a formal education in the field, what books (or other resources) would you recommend, how did you learn all of this? -Kris

quickestbun

Well addiction is a pretty good example of how the answer to your question really is "no." In terms of changing how someone "reacts" to things. It's pretty well established from what I understand that an alcoholic will always be an alcoholic even if they're sober for 20 years. One drink and they'll be diving right back into the abyss. You can be trained into abstaining from certain stimuli but the way you react when exposed to them is pretty much hard wired. I think there are alternative schools of thought out there but that's the conventional wisdom on the subject it seems.

Matt Orchard

Thanks for your reply Matt 😂 great start ma man lol ... but aye that’s basically what I meant nurture over nature .. on the rest of it yeah I’d agree with u.. I think it would all be about self discipline and control of right and wrong wouldn’t it? like addictions accept obviously serial killers addictions aren’t dangerous to themselves lol

John

Hmm, that's a very deep question and above my pay grade to be honest. Are you getting at a Nature Vs. Nurture thing? If looking at it through that sort of prism then I certainly think it's not ALL on one factor. So I don't think every serial killer was destined to be a serial killer. If certain things had gone differently maybe certain people we've come to know as monsters would be perfectly well adjusted members of society. But others, probably not so much. Dahmer is a pretty good example from what I understand. I've heard he had a perfectly decent upbringing and his Dad seems like a really quality guy. I remember being really effected by an anecdote in a documentary about the Ceshire Murders I saw a couple of years ago. If you're not familiar with the case I honestly don't recommend looking into it. Absolutely horrible. Anyway, the brother of one of the perpetrators was interviewed and was talking about their childhood and he told this story about how sometimes his brother would do things like hold his hand down on a hot stove before their parents would come in to the room and tell him no one would ever believe him if he told or something to that effect. Just an evil, sadistic fucking maniac from day 1. But the brother telling the story is totally fine psychologically from all we can tell. Same upbringing, same genetic makeup but one is a monster and the other is anything but. Very scary stuff.

Matt Orchard

Do you think the psychology of someone as in the way they think, act ,respond, perceive ,react etc to life or situations— like serial killers etc ... do u think that they can be changed .?

John

looking forward to it!

MyNameFits

I don't want to talk too much about people who are related to me but are not me if you get what I mean. I have a small family, I'll say that much :)

Matt Orchard

Hi Matt!! Tell us about your family❤️

Jade Wooding

I had a small back and forth with Mike from That Chapter on Twitter about that last week! Yes, Jamie Kempson was under name suppression over here and most of the video evidence around him was under lock and key when all of that was at peak. I did not know so much had been released after his conviction until Mike put out his video. That one is a maybe. I'd need to figure out what the angle is but he's certainly a piece of work so there's plenty of material to work with.

Matt Orchard

Grace Milane?

Jade Wooding

Although I'm really impartial to 90s rock and even crappy 90s pop (nostalgia I think), my favorite genre is folk music. Way before I ever started making original content I uploaded Old Crow Medicine Show's latest single to YT because tons of other people were putting up fakes for some reason. I left it up when I started making proper documentaries because I just think it's funny to be randomly there lol. OCMS are probably my fav band. I've been listening to Tyler Childers a lot as of late. But I'm pretty damn eclectic. Huge Nirvana fan, love classic rock (as in The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Rolling Stones etc) and am also a big fan of Eminem oddly enough. Even his crappy albums have some cuts I like. NZ music: Well we punch above our weight for sure but being totally honest I don't listen to a ton of Kiwi music recreationaly. The song I used for the Thomas Chan video by Ingrid and the Ministers was one I heard while hosting my old breakfast show and was immediately caught by. All of their stuff is great. "When It Happens" and "Tryin and Dyin" are two other beautiful songs from them. A reoccurring theme of listening to songs on the playlist at that station was that while there was a ton of bullshit (We'd play pretty much anything if it was a local artist) you would sometimes hear a song from a tiny, absolute nothing name and go, "This is every bit as good as nationally known acts". Here's an example of a totally rocking song by a Christchurch band that just about no one has heard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEHlgMwCuwI Oh, and The Beths are an example of an NZ band I really like that have actually achieved some of the success they deserve: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVImwSb4EYU

Matt Orchard

I really appreciate you giving us updates, super excited for the next video especially since I know there’s a somewhat positive outcome! I was wondering what kind of music you like? You put some great stuff in the videos! And if there are any NZ bands you think people should check out!

Rileigh

Thanks for your answer, Matt! You’re an interesting fellow. My father-in-law went to University for broadcast journalism and then went to Law School. He was recruited by the CIA and had a long career. My mother-in-law eventually worked for CIA as a satellite imagery interpreter. You never know where your skills will take you in life. I really enjoy your channel, especially the deep dive you did on polygraphs - that info totally changed my perspective. Thanks for your excellent work!!

ReSearcher

Appreciate it :)

Matt Orchard

Your videos are incredibly well made. We will wait as long as it takes.

Sean Coyle

I signed up for a 2 year radio course at the New Zealand Broadcasting School in my late 20s when I decided I needed a change in career path. I didn't necessarily want to be on the radio and do that for the rest of my life but I figured just getting a foot in the door of the media industry would be a good way to make connections with other creatives and just figure things out as I went along from there. Then the job I wound up with was Breakfast Host of the local alternative music station across the road from the broadcasting school. Not at all the typical gig one winds up with after graduating. It was a really cool gig but the downside is it there was no obvious next step from it. Very isolated from the rest of the media world. I got let go when COVID hit and honestly took it as a welcome opportunity to regroup and figure out what was next. I made the JCS parody video just to get my head around basic video editing because it's a good skill to have generally when applying for a lot of media jobs. Then that sort of spiraled out of control in a good way and here we are. I don't work in any form of terrestrial media anymore and I'm happy for it lol. Fun? Jeez I guess I do need more hobbies. I enjoy watching videos about politics and I love listening to podcasts while cooking. Or listening to podcasts while doing just about anything. I probably consume around 10 hours of audio a week.

Matt Orchard

Thanks for the update, Matt! I’d be interested in knowing how you got into Media/Radio? Do you still work in radio? What do you do for fun?

ReSearcher

Cheers mate :)

Matt Orchard

Thanks!

Matt Orchard

We could all eat and exercise a bit more I'm sure, Matt. Glad to hear your mental health is doing ok. I'm sure doing what you do puts a toll on one's mind. So thank you for sacrificing that for us. And thank you for your response! Sounds silly but it feels like I'm talking to a celebrity lol. You're a star in my opinion, Matt. I hope you never stop.

John Heiser

IHF is obviously joking but I have actually gotten that question occasionally. I'm assuming he gets it too (everyone should check out his channel if they haven't already). I've also seen people seriously speculate that "Jim" might be behind the channel "This Is Monsters." The answer of course is "no." I was reading the other day about how no two people write in exactly the same manner. If you watch JCS and any channel like mine that uses the same sort of format you'll see that concept illustrated pretty well. Yes it is the same *genre* but different people are clearly behind each one. It comes across in the narrative style.

Matt Orchard

I could be eating and exercising a little better but physical health is good for the most part. Mental health is too in general, although making this particular video has made me feel a little out of it even though I normally have a very strong stomach. One of the jurors said in an interview recently that watching someone die every day takes a toll and I can attest to that. Not saying there's any need to worry about me, it's just been a bit of a drag is all!

Matt Orchard

Your channel is paramount to my attention span. Damn good work!

Kaini Rue

It's a goal of mine to do a video on a Kiwi case one day (I've already got a sick intro about New Zealand in mind) - the tough part is finding an NZ case that has enough raw video/audio to craft a story around. David Bain is the case I've thought about that I think might have enough of that prerequisite material. Although I haven't done my own personal research, which means I can't for SURE say what my opinion is in the case, having listened to Black Hands I would be incredibly surprised if I came out thinking he wasn't guilty as sin. It seems quite obvious to me he got out on technicalities that his supporters like to paint as actual vindication. I haven't read much about Mark Lundy at all tbh, I'll put it in my doc.

Matt Orchard

ARE YOU JCS

In Human Form - Social Criticism & Psychology

Lol, 3 John's in a row.

John Heiser

I've been a fan of everything you've put out so far. I loved your Daniel Holtzclaw video, so I'm super excited for your next video! You do fantastic work and I appreciate everything you put into it. As for my question; how is Matt doing today? Physical and mental health doing ok?

John Heiser

Since your a kiwi 😃 thoughts on famous kiwi cases? Mark Lundy and David Bain in particular

JohnKeysKeys

Take ur time can’t rush your kind of quality. 👌👌
