I don't know if it was confirmed by the filmmakers, but most of us have thought that Luca and Alberto are gay. When Luca is found out by his parents, they decide to send him (away) to conversion therapy. Alberto we find out later has been abandoned by his parent. Luca and Alberto run off and pass as Human (straight) in the town. In the end Lucas' parents see him and accept him for who he is. And Alberto finds a Father and a home with Massimo. The boys find others like them, including the ice cream old ladies (I believe are a long term couple).
