When thinking of Torch's design, the realization came to mind that if someone was the biggest man in Canterlot City, it'd him due to his dragon king conterpart.

Decided to throw limits out of the window and for this special case go full bulk. He's not too sculpted, but by size he's number 1.

And that goes to him having been a very strict, fair and disciplined man and dog trainer. That also reflects in his daughter, and her constant need to excell at everything she does. Especially with her small frame she has a lot to prove.

How Torch gets so big is purely up in the air, but it has to have been a freak magic accident, that's for sure.

After the magic he's now more loose, and is retiring, as some other kind of bitches need his attention.

Small Ember is left to fill his role as the head of the Dog School. Her father was supposed to have moved out by the time she entered the Head Office. Taking a deep breath and too stuck in her own head, she didn't notice the moans of the dog school students whom had some last goodbyes to give.

She even dressed very seriously (by her standards)

Also I think it's just hilarious how the magic changed the halls and office of Torch to match his size, leaving Ember with oversized funiture everywhere.

And Mina is just your local comic book cashier and dog owner.
