The Electric cup idea made me think of something like a Shmup Olympics. Imagine gathering all the best players of a game/sport and have them compete, not for the world record but to be best that cup. I would really like to see ten runs of Battle Garegga by the best players and would probably find it pretty exciting. Will the next player beat this score? Will the low odds player die on the final boss?

Enjoyed the podcast. An Electric Cup does sound like a really cool idea. It's unfortunate that there aren't more shmups out there that have widespread attention on them, since that might make it easier to spread knowledge about the event and the prestige of doing well at one. If CAVE actually made a legit Touhou arcade hybrid, and not a cell phone game; maybe that would add some well needed hype. Ultimately though, the success of such an event would have to come from people feeling like their success transcends the niche of the group somewhat. At least that's how it seems to me. People love competitive skateboarding even if they don't skateboard, and this fuels the desire for people to go into competitive skateboarding. This goes for competitive poker, and all kinds of stuff. It even goes for speedrunning, since speedrunners know that their feats are appreciated and enjoyed by just regular gamers.

People love rooting for the runners at GDQ; but there's also kind of joy that comes from seeing them slip up. It shows how difficult what they're doing actually is. People want to know that what they're seeing is not a guaranteed victory, or that there's something valuable at stake; even if it's just that the person you're rooting for doesn't win a tournament or something like that. If there were some way to make the sense of 'risk' seem more real to the viewers; that could make it more appealing to watch, and easier to get excited about.

rly appreciate ur perspective on th industry ! agree that mainstream ideas equating games w. more traditional art/media discourse misses the point entirely-- would 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 to hear more of ur thoughts on "gaming" vs. "art" in detail sometime!! also, don`t know if by any chance u've ever heard of th philosophy youtuber Justin Murphy-- he recently shut down his Patreon in favour of an Urbit (alt-tech platform) community and in addition started a community crypto-token so members of his community get a literal financial investment in th growth of his channel/brand. idk much about th topic but it`s th most literal interpretation of what u were getting at with th early supporter rewards thing and it seems to b workin` great for him !

I like the core idea of an Electric Cup, and look forward to hearing more as you develop the idea.

Agree with above,we support because we enjoy your content also the shmup events you cover and shmup slam.thinking about iconoclast high score going under the radar maybe more coverage from other channels report on these things like “shmup news”so when any player makes great achievements the wider audience knows about it.and hell yeah watching a live super play or wr attempt is super cool!it’s always a pleasure watching insane skills

The incentive for patrons is the joy we get from supporting your regular content creation. I don't need anything extra :P

Yes ha, sadly I don't think I can make the incentive system of special merch of something like that happen financially, but maybe some kind of Patreon hall of fame on my website would be cool :-)

Your approach to gaming purity is appreciated. There are other places I can find other types of content.
That incentive system for current patrons is a funny idea. I don't think I'd care for that since that'd cost money that I'd rather go into other things.
"The Tragedy of the Shmup" is a very humorous phrase. A live event with stakes seems to be a viable method. The problem would be gathering enough interest in it. Gus's Futari run was extremely good and I'd love to see more epic live runs.
