I am so over the remakes and trying to bring back an era. I understand the feeling of seeing something you used to adore or went through when you were younger, and stumbling upon it years later. The rush of nostalgic emotions we get from a time that was so simple is the best high ever… but that was past. I really don’t understand why nobody can’t grasp that. It was popular back then because, more and likely, it was fresh and brand new. You can’t bring back a feeling so many years later it happened. We’re going to get stuck in a loop of remaking things, chasing a ghost of a feeling we only experienced simply because we were young and impressionable. When I see something that is being remade, or rebooted, all I can think about is Gretchen Wieners. Constantly trying to make fetch happen, but unlike Gretchen, it DID happen, but like 10-20 years ago. Also, when you have an “original idea” and it goes mainstream and turns into a classic, people in the same field (entertainment world really) will spin it a thousand ways until it becomes a trope. We would have seen it so many times in remixes. And if you want another, you’re gonna have to pay. Hollywood is spending way too much and relying on CGI and a green screen to do all the work for the end product still looking cheaply made. They are going to stick with remakes because original and authenticity ideas come with a price. In the music world, when a musician starts to get traction and starts making a name for themselves, a plethora of look-a-likes will soon come after. It’s the same recipe every single time, and the clones never stick. You can’t immolate the magic from something and try to recreate it again. It’s rare for a reason. Lightning in a bottle! No one asks for remakes in my opinion. They just get made and thrown to us against our will. They all look so cheap to me when I do give one a chance. Plus, they constantly refer back to the original movie way too much. They’ll get a cast back in front of cameras or whatever, and then everything else becomes secondary. The writing, plot, dialogue gets corny, and sometimes I get secondhand embarrassment because of how cringe it can get. However, I will say, I don’t mind them remaking the princess movies into live action. I feel in some ways they do try to put effort in those. The Cinderella remake is one of my fave remakes too along with Beauty in the Beast. They both had that ethereal feel that Disney is know for! I believe the reason why nostalgia is such a front runner in making things for entertainment purposes is because the 2020s have no distinctive pop culture value. All we have is fighting on the internet and micro trends that are just revivals of already existing things. They are taking a page right out of bath and body works’s book. They are “retiring” fragrances, and bringing them back with a new name slapped on it.
