Regarding the Sprite Improvements

Hey guys,

Doku and I have come to a decision that we aren’t exactly happy about, but felt was necessary. As we were working on the sprite reworks, we realized that it wasn’t coming out the way we imagined and we were sinking way too much time into it.

As development progressed on Project Cappuccino, Doku’s art style subtly changed as she gained experience. This leads to a slightly jarring difference between the old sprites and the new.

With these things in mind, we have decided to scrap this addition. 

Sure, we could try to edit the sprites until something works, or just redo MORE sprites so they are all new, but frankly, this has already taken up so much time for such an off-putting result. The sprite reworks have been consistently taking longer than we estimated, and even now we can’t guess how long the rest of the sprites or fixes would take. Even worse, we can’t even guarantee that it’ll all work out and look great in the end. The character sprites are such a big part of the game that changing them now just looks and feels wrong.

There isn’t much we can do other than apologize at the moment. We’ll likely be talking more about this in a post mortem, but it ultimately boils down to us having a poorly planned patron goal.

Lucretia on the other hand went by smoothly and feels like a much more satisfying addition to the game. You guys can expect the patch to be released sometime in the next couple of days.

We’re terribly sorry about letting you guys down with the sprite goal and hope you understand. It’s simply not feasible without sinking more time into it and ending up with something that we aren’t happy with and the players will likely not be either. All of this is part of learning the development process and we’ll be sure to learn from this mistake.
