Music Theory for Guitar | 07: Dim & Aug Triads | Homework 1

New here? Wondering where to start? Click here

Hi Everyone,

This is the first homework lesson for Diminished and Augmented Triads. In this lesson we're working exclusively on paper to get a clear picture of how to talk about and write out diminished and augmented triads. This lesson will prepare you for the next lesson, where we take these concepts and try them out on the guitar.

Other lessons in this series:

- Dim & Aug Triads Lesson

- Homework 2

- Practice

Please share your homework, performances and whatever else you feel relates to this lesson on the community forum.

Have a question? Ask on the weekly live Q&A, called Office Hours. Also, check out Practice Thoughts if you need help figuring out how to practice.

Check out the Lesson Archive for more Music Theory lessons.

This lesson is part of my Music Theory For Guitar series.

Music Theory for Guitar | 07: Dim & Aug Triads | Homework 1

Comments

Hey Scott, for the part 2 of the homework, I always have to go through the wwhwwwh to find whether it's major, minor, dim or Aug. Is there a faster way to find that? Thanks!

Robin Dlargent

This is great, it summarizes all about triads so far. Good job

Thanks Kfir - great idea

Scott, I've noticed that your homework PDFs for the last lesson (Minor Triads) and for this lesson have all of the blanks filled in. In this video you show only one of the triads filled in (like Bm) and then we are supposed to fill in the rest. But if you look at homework pdf Lesson 7, HOMEWORK No. 1, pg. 1, they are all filled in, so when I print it there's nothing for me to do but look at your answers. I don't think this was your intention. Can you update these PDFs so that the spots we need to fill in are blank? Thanks! Edit: NEVERMIND! I downloaded the wrong PDF. The homework PDF I should have looked at is "MTFG 07 | Homework 1.pdf" and instead I was looking at "Scott's Notes - HW 1.pdf" I would suggest you call the answer pdf something like "Scott's Answer Key - HW 1.pdf" - since you are so careful and meticulous with everything else :)

You can’t change the note letter of the triad. It needs to maintain the 1-3-5 otherwise it’s no longer that triad. You distinguish the notes by sharping or flatting

yea ive watched all the homeworks and practices up to here :) i think i understand what you mean, i just didn't get why it had to exclusively be, for example a C# E# Gx for a C sharp augmented instead of say a C# E# A or any other combination of enharmonic notes to make the triad. thanks for the replies :)

Lewis Gower

Hi Lewis! Are you starting here or have you watched the previous lessons in this series as well? I recommend starting from Music Theory for Guitar Lesson 1. Essentially, triads are built with either major thirds or minor thirds, which is what happens when you play every other note of a scale. Asking "why" is a little bit like asking why do cars have wheels - it's part of the definition of a car to have wheels. A triad, by definition, is a little stack of thirds - root. third. fifth. Watch the whole series from the beginning and if you still have questions, let me know!

Scott Paul Johnson

Why do triads have to use 'everyother note' and what does that exactly mean Thanks, Lewis

Lewis Gower

I really like this. By doing these exercises you really learn the theory and yes it's a sort of meditation. Doing it with the "note name scratch paper" makes it easier but I also did it in my head, that works but it takes longer ;-)

Andy

I included it just now! I should really be adding that PDF to pretty much every lesson. Glad you're learning a lot!

Scott Paul Johnson

Great presentation Scott, this really solidifies the concepts nicely. One thing that would be beneficial, would be to include a pdf of the guitar neck note names along with the homework pdf. Great job Scott, your approach to teaching guitar is exactly what I have been looking for.
