Playing Mechanics | 01: Basics - Holding a Pick, Strumming, More

Scott, your that tip to use your pick "as if playing through the string and stopping on the string below" has made a huge difference for me. Today, I traded in my 0.46mm learner pick for a 0.60mm and altered my grip slightly (as you indicated), the new sound and precision it's given has re-inspired my journey ..... thanks

Mike Halliday

Yes. This was one of my earliest Patreon videos. I'm glad you got a lot out of it

It is clear that you had a hard time with your cameras and angles, but I found this video very helpful. I easily tend to experience pain because of tension and bad gestures while practicing, so I found a lot of useful info here. Thanks a lot!

Thanks for waiting - I'm planning to do some lessons that help with how to strum using counts and measures and all that.

Scott Paul Johnson

Is there a name of a guitar strum like counts, or measure... Hmmmm I don't know if this question would make sense but...hmmm like technics of strums... Hehe... I hope you would understand... So thanks for this patreon... I am so greatful....😊😊

Thank Scott , that wasn’t bad. Was really needing those plectrum tips . I don’t use one because I just don’t think I can play well at all with one . Have you covered tips on picking single notes yet ? I always hit the wrong strings when using a Pick.

Emma.T

Hi Scott , do you have any thought on getting your fingers to work more independently ? I definitely notice my pinky finger has a mind of its own when I am trying to do scales

Paul weiler

Weird. Good to know though... I wonder if other people are having the same issue with the app

Scott Paul Johnson

Ah. So the patreon app on my phone, clicking the video will automatically send me to the vimeo video on the vimeo website. But on my browser, clicking the video it tries to play the video rather than redirecting me to vimeo so it's probably saying that because its the embedded video trying to play on the patreon website?

Kevin Vu

Hi Kevin. I looked into it and I’m confused. Maybe try a different browser?

Scott Paul Johnson

Pretty much a majority of the videos unless you have a vimeo link which those videos would work since it redirects me. Maybe it doesn't recognize me as a patron yet, or the payment hasn't gone through? Idk.

Kevin Vu

Which one(s) did that for you? I’ll investigate

Scott Paul Johnson

Hmmm

Scott Paul Johnson

What does it mean when the video says, "Sorry Because of its privacy settings, this video cannot be played here." ?

Kevin Vu

THANK YOU!!!! As someone who just picked up a guitar for 20 bucks and has been trying to teach myself with bits and pieces from the internet, I thought the hand and wrist pain was just a part of the game, and I thought my strumming would just get better if I kept playing. I've pretty much stuck with you as my teacher once I discovered you, but I am so glad to have found this video!!!!!!! My sound is immediately cleaner and more clear. No more weird pain, but I can feel the muscles where I need to build strength. If you can, this (or some version) would be a good one for youtube because it really lays down a safe and solid foundation to grow from for complete beginners. Thanks Scott! It's funny, I've never met you but I've spent all day with you today and many hours before.. haha. So peace, friend!

Very helpful! I am struggling to keep the lower (4, 5, 6) quiet after exiting them while running scales, etc. Thinking of it as playing it with the pad of my finger is helpful....I think. 😃Now I am going to practice 1) playing scales with the pads of my finger on those strings and 2) pulling back my arm when I approach the higher strings.

Dan Morrow

awesome! I kind of came to the realization of using pads of the fingers when playing scales (instead of tips of the fingers) by myself but wasn't sure it was the right technique/good idea to do that. you just confirmed my finding, thanks a lot!

Alexander

It's great getting this overview to reinforce things picked up through trial and error, and to identify what not to do. When you have a moment, can you go over vibrato/legato/bends, etc.? I notice that using a bit of vibrato (I think) when playing scales or soloing makes a big different in the sound.

George Sarnetsky

This is a great idea.

Scott Paul Johnson

Making a video about this for you

Scott Paul Johnson

You could give us something to play, we record and you give tips.

Tyler Laird

Nice technique vid. How can I effectively mute the lower strings when I pick notes on the first 3 strings?

Roy

Comment your questions for clarity and whatnot
