Early Access: How to Remove a Highway

Next video is up early on YouTube! I really enjoyed making this one because I got to check up on lots of the endangered highways here in the U.S. and check on their status. Unfortunately, not enough of them are truly endangered just yet. But I was heartened to see how many organizations exist to tear them down!

Early Access: How to Remove a Highway

Comments

Hi Dave, sorry I'm commenting here -- just watched the Nebula video on European sprawl and a chart you showed really confused me and it's bothering me. At around the second minute there, you show a comparison of population density vs distance from the city center for Paris, Barcelona, Los Angeles, and New York. But at least the New York graph looks completely wrong, which makes me question what I'm looking at. it shows max New York density at 100 people per hectare -- but Manhattan's average population density is around 290 people per hectare; Brooklyn is 150, and even towns across the Hudson like West New York and Union City are over 200. Am I completely misunderstanding things??

Another freeway that may be removed though not getting nearly the attention of other freeway removals is I-229 in St Joseph MO. It's still in the 'going through alternatives' stage but it looks like it eventually will be removed (and decommissioned) when it reaches the end of its expected life next decade. Just something you might be able to use in a future video to show that it can be possible to remove highways even in conservative states.
