Mid-summer channel update: life changes
Added 2020-07-02 16:00:08 +0000 UTCHello Patrons! Thank you as always for your support. Your continued commitment means I feel confident doing videos on topics like homelessness and school segregation, even though I know the YouTube algorithm and advertisers may not be as happy with the low interest/views.
I have a few life updates that will mean some changes for the channel that I wanted to brief you on:
1. I'm moving! Sacramento will no longer be in the background for "on location" shots. I'm going to miss it, as the city is an excellent stand-in for "typical US city."
2. I'm moving to San Luis Obispo, California, where I've accepted a position as an assistant professor at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I'll be teaching city planning to undergraduate and graduate students and I couldn't be more thrilled! I'm not anticipating any slowdown in uploads (except for this summer, see below). I've been making these videos in the evenings and on weekends, and I'll keep that schedule going. The faculty at Cal Poly know about this channel and are very supportive. I'm confident that being an academic makes me a better YouTuber, and I'm glad I can continue to be both.
3. San Luis Obispo is a small city, but I'll be about three hours from both LA and the Bay Area. I'll likely travel to those cities when I want footage (when it's safe to travel again). And I'm sure you'll be seeing SLO in the background of outdoor shots soon.
4. Speaking of backgrounds, I've bought a house with a small attached studio apartment. This will be the new City Beautiful HQ! I'll be outfitting the space with a new set. It won't be appearing until later in the fall, and until then I'll have to improvise my usual "talking head" shots.
5. As I'm moving soon, I'm taking an upload break. After the Minecraft video, there will be a gap that will allow me to pack my house, move, and unpack in SLO. The next video will be uploaded in late August. I may do a channel update video summarizing all of this information for the general YouTube audience between now and then.
That's it for now! I'm looking forward to a time when COVID-19 is vanquished and I can travel again. I've already had to cancel a trip to Toronto in the fall. :( But all things considered, I'm doing alright. I hope you are too. And if you want to learn from me in person, get your application in to Cal Poly!

Thanks! Yes, it seems like the campus is growing fast and plans to keep adding dorms in the future. It should be fun to see it all come together.

Saw the CP pennant behind you in your most recent video and (as a Cal Poly Alum) that nudged me here to join the Patreon fun π€ hope you get time to check out all their recent (since 2010) expansions, they need a city planner on staff just to manage the schoolβs growth since my wife and I graduated!

2020-10-18 03:18:31 +0000 UTCHi Aiden! I'm not sure about the job market in Australia, but here in the US a bachelor's degree (undergraduate) is typically what's required to enter the profession. I haven't heard of anyone in my circle of planners get a job before then. So I'd recommend doing what it takes to get into a university program that offers planning -- it's probably the most direct route to a career. Best of luck and feel free to message me with any follow-up questions.

2020-07-08 03:36:05 +0000 UTCCongratulations from Australia! I know you may not have time to respond, but do you have any tips for a student looking at getting into city planning? Left high school early for other reasons, so donβt have an ATAR (a tertiary grading score earned by a test called HSC, which is similar to SAT I think). Thanks in advance!
