Spring (Pandemic) Update
Added 2020-03-31 19:12:55 +0000 UTCHi everyone,
I hope all of you are staying safe, distant, and healthy these days. I'm sure many of you are being hit hard by this emotionally, financially, and otherwise. As the governor of California says (repeatedly), "this is a moment in time." We'll get through it! That said, if you need to reduce or eliminate your Patreon pledge, please do so! I will be fine and I want you all to be fine, too.
Here are a few channel updates:
1. Running a YouTube channel in a pandemic. My schedule and work rate for this channel has not changed as a result of COVID-19, and I hope to continue to publish at the same every-two-week pace. I do most of my work on this channel on evenings when the kids are in bed, and that time remains untouched. Finishing my dissertation with three kids at home... well that's a different story!
2. 200,000 subscribers! A little less than a year after the channel reached 100,000 subscribers, we added another 100k. The growth of the channel is wonderfully steady, which gives me confidence that we're building something long-lasting and sustainable.
3. Livestreams. I know I owe all of you livestreams. It has become somewhat more challenging do to the aforementioned children being home. But I'm somewhat desperate for more human connection, so stay tuned. I hope to plan one in the next week or two.
4. Upcoming video topics. The next video will be on the traffic metric "level of service" and why it has stalled infill development in the US. I have a few ideas for the video after that, including a history of the "Great Migration" in the US, a ranking of the top transit systems worldwide, and a debunking of "best places to live" lists. Do any of those stand out to you? Any other ideas? Share in the comments. Note: I'm hesitant to do a COVID-19 video. I enjoy the respite from the news working on videos gives me, and I'm not sure I want to focus on it during my YouTube time. If there is a lot of demand, however, I could definitely do a brief video.
Thanks again for all of your help and support!

Debunking best places to live sounds super interesting, and like a great jumping off point for talking about what we really mean by standard of living. It's worth seizing every opportunity to bridge the gap between the abstract 40k foot view, and what matters to us day to day in our cities & communities. In that vein, the single family zoning & ending homelessness videos were riveting!
