Chapter 741 - Into the final stretch

POV Weslin

For the remaining hours, I keep watching the event and come to the realization of what the Ruler of Humility likely wanted to show us. Most of the assholes on the screen are out of their depth. They are slow, they do not handle pain that well, and they are unused to their bodies being so weak. Though as time goes on, everyone keeps improving as they adapt. After all, all of them are Hell difficulty and Beyonders, so it would be lame if they did not adjust.

Everyone starts to use mana more effectively, and their bodies move with more force as they find ways to pull greater strength from it. Some even gather enough mana to use more damaging imitations of skills despite lacking their active ones. There are fireballs, a few manage to float for a moment, some form barriers, and others crackle with lightning. Always in small amounts, since mana becomes an increasingly valuable resource.

People loot the houses, finding rusty common grade weapons at best, many of them damaged or broken.

I watch strong A rank I recognize lose to someone who is usually far weaker, simply because that person adapted more quickly. But I rarely see anyone give up. Everyone there is a crazy motherfucker, and I feel the mood on the balcony shift the longer it continues.

People wish they were still inside so they could see how far they might push these weak bodies and how much of their skill they could bring out.

And I see fear settling in.

There are people everyone realizes are monsters. Capable of ridiculous feats even with such low resources. And out of all of it, it annoys me as well that I am not there to compete with them, because I know I could. But even this might be part of the lesson. I was not humble enough and died by underestimating the woman with the metal shard, too excited to clash with Morwag as if we were equals.

Meanwhile, Nathaniel is one of these monsters. Everyone who watches him knows he has not used mana at all, except for extremely short bursts to dodge lethal attacks. Otherwise, he keeps gathering all that tiny amount of mana from his five stat points into the faint halo above his head. He moves like a machine, showing no hesitation in running away when needed and often luring people into traps.

And when it comes to it, he faces multiple opponents at once. He fights dirty, he fights smart, and if needed, he offers his body to take a wound in exchange for getting a hit in.

And despite all of that, he keeps moving. Bloodied, exhausted, wounded, but still fighting. He kills multiple S rank candidates who are rumored to possibly reach proper S rank in a few years.

He even kills both Brich and Kaari. Brich falls for his trap and gets buried under a building that was already falling apart. Kaari dies after throwing broken spears at him until she runs out, and once he reaches her, he faces her in a brutal clash where he nearly lets her kill him just to deliver the finishing blow. All while wearing an expression that chills even me.

Watching that, Morwag, whose heart I can almost feel pounding with hunger for a fight, stands up and leaves. He cannot keep watching without participating, and I worry these two will clash one day in a way that ends with only one of them walking away.

Then there is that young assassin. Out of everyone here, she is the deadliest. Not a single person slows her down. She seems to have sharp, almost animal instincts and moves through traps, hides, tracks people, and when needed, fights several opponents at once, slipping away without a single wound. Her talent for this style of combat is clear, and I doubt there is anyone who can watch her without feeling at least a trace of fear. I hear people compare her to Lyraen, who is feared in a similar way.

Then there is that black haired, green eyed man who joined Crimson Forge not that long ago. Nothing about him is very eye catching, but he is simply good at everything, and his use of his body reaches a level where his speed almost matches the assassin’s. He is able to exert what seems like near the maximum possible strength from his stats, thanks to improving faster than most of the people inside.

He faces one of the S ranks, the mana oriented Quintan, and wins even though Quintan burns through all his mana trying to take him down.

And there are a few more. A man who floats atop buildings and moves from rooftop to rooftop while throwing things down at people. Another who relies on fire attacks. Another who uses a movement technique to spike his speed. Another who oscillates mana along his body.

While watching them, I keep looking for Nathaniel’s sister, but there is no sign of her inside this event.

The area starts to shrink after a notification, we can see just like the people inside, and the clashes turn even deadlier.

I shift my attention to Nathaniel again, just as he staggers back with a dagger stabbed into his side, but his opponent screams, both eyes poked out by Nathaniel’s fingers, which drip with blood. He did not even use mana here.

Nathaniel leaves the dagger in his wound, takes a stone from his pocket, and throws it to the side of his opponent. The man turns toward the sound, and as he shifts his weight, Nathaniel steps in, grabs him from behind, and strangles him until the man disappears from the event.

Nathaniel then stands and moves through the street onto a square where all the remaining people begin to converge. In total, twenty of them.

A group of seven who have been moving together for the past hour are closest to Nathaniel and rush to attack him and get rid of him quickly before facing others. Several of them even raise their mana a little, though they are clearly saving it and have been doing so for a while.

Nathaniel looks at them with the same calm, unbothered expression.

Then the halo that has hovered above his head for nearly five hours begins to spin in a sharp, frantic blur, and a moment later it collapses with a heavy thump into a single orb. A tiny one, barely the size of half a fingernail.

Blood gushes from Nathaniel’s eyes, ears, mouth, and nose all at once, drawing quick chuckles from the people almost close enough to reach him, but even then, they put their guard up.

Nathaniel drags his hand across his face, only smearing the blood further, then combs his hair back from his forehead to reveal his eyes, eerie and endlessly confident. The orb over his head pulses and turns pitch black, then, in the same blink, expands into a black halo. This one is much thinner, like a string of black mana, barely thicker than several strands of hair woven together.

The mana around the people near him flickers, then fades. They slow down and come to a stop. I can almost see it, the mana they had gathered slipping out of their bodies while Nathaniel reaches toward the halo, pulling thin streams of mana from it.

A dozen or so mana projectiles shoot from him, obliterating the entire group in an instant.

Nathaniel’s body sways, yet he still steps forward as more projectiles rise around him.

The black haired, green eyed man faces him as orange light flickers across the metal rod he holds, forming the shape of a sword. They clash several times, but Nathaniel uses all that stolen mana for body strengthening and comes out on top by simply overwhelming him and stealing his mana. It is not pretty, but it does not need to be. Just overwhelming force, used without care for efficiency. But all of it earned only thanks to the remarkable talent in the hands of someone who understands how to wield it.

In the end, only the assassin woman remains, and the two of them face each other in the middle of the broken fountain, water up to their ankles.

The black string of mana dissolves, and all that mana floods into Nathaniel’s body, while the girl becomes even faster. I am almost stunned as I realize she has not been using mana to boost her speed until now. As I watch her, it becomes clear she is not skilled at shaping mana, and that everything so far came from pure physical talent. Yet over the past five hours, she has adapted, trained, grown, and now she draws on mana to push her speed even further.

With each passing second, their speed climbs higher, and their movements start to blur. Every moment lets them learn, improve, adjust, and grow.

Nathaniel staggers back with a slash across his neck, and the woman’s finger flies into the air, cut clean by oscillating mana spread across the broken dagger he holds.

They rush in together and collide, the shallow water beneath their feet splashing with every step. It churns aggressively under Nathaniel with his bursts of speed, and more calmly under the smooth movements of the young woman.

The fight continues until Nathaniel falls back one final time with a shard of metal lodged in his neck and blood pouring out. I expect any expression other than the one he shows, yet he looks happy and satisfied, almost as if he predicted this ending and feels proud of what he achieved. There is no hint of disappointment or shaken confidence, and his pride shines even brighter than before.

Smiling at her, he says something, more blood spilling from his neck.

The woman facing him nods, and a bit of mana gathers on the tip of her finger as she draws a symbol into the air.

(^‿^)

Then Nathaniel disappears, and the event ends.

***

POV Nathaniel

My most valuable reward from the event is the simple fact that it took me only five hours and a little mana to convert it into black mana. More than anything, it proves that even though some people around me are absolute monsters, I am not doing so badly either.

These few short hours revealed my mastery over mana even without system given skills, all shown through my understanding and control. All these days, weeks, and months of constant Mana Cycling and my determination to avoid upgrading or relying on my skills have paid off.

I value this more than any other reward.

But there are some other rewards as well. For example, almost immediately after popping out of the event, a few of my skills level up.

[Mana Manipulation - lvl 74 > Mana Manipulation - lvl 75]

[Manifestation - lvl 21 > Manifestation - lvl 22]

[Accumulation - lvl 44 > Accumulation - lvl 45]

With this, two out of three requirements to successfully complete the quest for the title of Absolute Candidate given by the system are done. Even sooner than I expected. The last one remains, to hold out for ten seconds against a Champion grade being.

My other reward for the event is one of the ten named residences here in Megacity, meaning Tacita likely got a low pristine item. But from what I have seen, I am sure she gained something else and likely values it more than that item.

Tacita has always relied on the Dexterity of her body and her wild instincts to move. But now, left with no choice, she relied on mana a little. Over these five hours, she instinctively grasped the way to use it to increase her speed even though she had never done it before, likely only using mana for her field or for her weapons.

I do not think she will ever invest stats into Mana. She feels like a single stat enjoyer, same as me and Jean. But I think she will now look deeper into the stats she already has and search for ways to increase her speed even further if needed. It is a terrifying thought.

Even now, I still consider her the most dangerous opponent one could face if they are humanoid and not building sized. That is why I knew the event was fucked, and clearly rigged the moment I saw Dexterity listed as the highest stat.

No matter what anyone says, the thought of fleeing from her always lingers in my mind, while it never rises when I think of Lyraen, Morwag, or Weslin. Even Nyssa might have been preferable if it ever came to that.

Maybe it is a sign of my humility, something the Ruler might have wanted to show to me and everyone else, a reminder of how we used to be and how some people rely too much on the system to shape their skills.

However, I have no problem running away like a little bitch when I need to, and returning only when it suits me. I am just twisted like that.

But now, with the Humility event out of the way, it is time to go into the final stretch. The 3rd tournament is almost here.

Comments

Yeah don’t like this chapter. I dunno it doesn’t make sense in the context of what she had available her. I get she has “instincts” but so do these s tiers. They are are also the kind that have trained legitimately. There’s no way she has other than wild beasts.

Hellnhavoc

Sad that Nat lost but kind of glad he got something out of it even if he didnt win. If only Mana was at 11 he would've won...

Balsamic ThunderThighs

The mana given was the lowest stat given at 5 and he still probably would have won if he fought like a mage from a distance. But momma ain't raise no bitch

Death56

No, the req was to survive an encounter with an uninjured champion grade opponent alone for 10 seconds without the being holding back.

Admiral Combustion

I absolutely love Morwag and how he has to leave because he just can’t take not being able to fight haha

Jonathan Nading

Wasn't it originally that he had to solo kill a champion grade opponent? Did that get retconned?

FeelingsandFoibles

If you think Nat making it to top 2 when his stat was the most underpowered one, and losing to essentially the Nat of dexterity, whole dex was powered up, is disappointing, idk what makes you happy. To me this is just another fantastic fight with an outcome that is totally reasonable and acts as a nice level set for Nat, and our expectations for him. He is nuts powerful for his level, has a ton of potential, but there are people with skillsets that counter him in some situations, and people who may have smaller potential, but have realized much more of theirs making them more powerful in the present.

Morde24

Thank you for thr chappie!

Kirin

Oh wait was the mana channeling req achieved prior to this

Johnny

How did he channel so much mana? Prob been explained before but are stat points equivalent to thousands of mana? Like it’s easier cuz proportions with lower stats? 10k mana or 50k or whatever the requirement was seems high in confused on the mechanics

Johnny

Hey Maya said he had quite a nice ass lol

Johnny

I love how Nat is portrayed in the story, yeah he is insane and powerful and absolutely going to become an absolute by the end of the story, but he isn’t invincible, his past mistakes catch up to him, he knows that he is going to lose to certain people and best of all he isn’t some perfect Mary Su. It is absolutely believable that there are people that could smoke Nat given the circumstances

AFunkyLad

All the contestants would be devoured and not ever the rulers protections would save them

Liam Zay

I thought that was fairly obvious. They are going to do a lot of their preparations under the tournament immortality and he needs to get the absolute candidate status from fighting a champion which he is doing on floor five after the tournament

Liam Zay

It's about technique. A stronger person will be able to lift less than a weaker person if they have technique that is worse by a large enough margin. That is effectively what Tacita did. She is a dex main and therefore has the best technique to utilize dex and dex was the highest stat. The combination of the two was strong enough for her to dog walker the whole competition which is reasonable. Also I read it as they started at the same stats, not that they couldn't raise the stats over the course of the event but maybe I understood that wrong.

PigNebula

Lvl 75 in mana manipulation and channeling 10 k mana. Only missing the 10seconds against a fully unleashed champion.

Gwiddion

I'm sorry but this was trash. Not nat loosing but tacitia being able to do what she did will 11 dex. It makes no sense. Unless Dex is a stat you can charge up like you can mana? Or maybe you can, idk can you charge up dex like mana? If so that's kind of dumb. Anyway sorry I love 99% of the shit you write but this one was really dumb without some explanation. Thanks

C Smith

What requirement did Nat meet from the absolute quest?

Deluis Serrano

I thought Nat will challenge a champion during the tutorial countdown, this way he can test things out during the tournament somehow also do his body upgrade as well at the same time.

David

Thank you!

Andrew

What’s the point of fantasy if it’s disappointing

G Laxman

tyftc

MrSlouch

Nat is probably going to challenge a champion in one of the matches then upgrade his body in the right after the tournament. Maybe during it if he gets a random level from his items.

TBONEMAN

ARE YOU REALLY GONNA DELAY THE BODYUPGRADE TO AFTER THE TOURNAMENT!

John

Tftc

1133557799

....what? No. He was using focus to turn mana into black mana. Now he did it with pure mana control. At no point in the story did he use PE to turn mana into black mana. Redistribution was used for tri colored but that didnt include PE, just mana controlled with redistribution

DarkRain

I am just roaring with laughter at seeing Nates flat ass run away. So funny. Good stuff!

Colby Jordan

I’m confused, how did he make black mana without any primordial energy? It was stated that primordial energy was a necessary ingredient in compressing man beyond its normal maximum. If this is an example of Nathaniel accomplishing it without, then what does that say about its rarity? How can it remain so unknown when it apparently only needs mana and compression, and not the primordial energies? Also how the hell did he predate on black mana without access to his passive? Is he now simply capable of it?

Mister Cakers

Ima make a theory here and now and if im wrong you can all throw me off the cliffhanger that happens then if any lol, but I think Tacita will be killed by Wraith guy probably out of fear or calculative risk just a guess though

Reps A

I need more cerim!!!!! Please crate a new tier i will pay!!!

Michel Kommers

It's obvios already... he is their grandfather by part of dad i think.

Michel Kommers

" do you enjoyed our battle as much as me"?

Bob

Last words to Tacita: "Do you now see the importance of the mana stat?"

Alex Reed

TFTC. And so Planthaniel adds new details to his blueprint of how to defeat Tacita.

Lance Beam

Thanks for the chapter

BlackRazaras

I think the planet that they are matched with doesn't even have anyone in the tutorial, so they will have to go in blind. And probably haughty, considering they go up against a freshly initiated world.

Tsorov

TFTC! I agree, seeing nat not always when a fight gives the story more impact when he improves

RJ Barnes

Tftc!!!! Had a feeling the speedster will succeed

Edmund Dillon

Imagine if Biscuit joined in.

Augustus

Ahaha we are paired with a newly initiated world, nothing can stop us from enslaving the whole population. Why is half the world void of mana and the other half a mana flooded hellscape?

Arnon Parenti

I love that he doesn’t always win. Makes every win more enjoyable. Satisfied with this conclusion. I wanna see Nat sis vs Tacita. Also it would have been fun to see Christoph in action. As a guy who started in beyond, he must be ridiculously strong even with low stats in theory.

Madje Tobi Marc'Avent Tchona

The Earth has 3 proper monsters. And there wasn’t even Nat’s sister and the first Beyonder in it. Pretty terrifying. 🙂👍 I wonder what the consequences will be after this event. 🤔

Adrian Rake

He's never faced Tacita before now. If he had fought her in the first tournement I think he would've lost, she countered him at the time.

Andrew

(x.x)

Ivan Jelenić

It would be funny if Earth got matched up with an average planet for the 3rd tournament where nobody has heard of them because their beyonders haven’t gotten past the first floor.

Isaac Lung

Letssssss gooooooo! Keen for the tournament arc!!!

Gravitea

I'm surprised that Nat lasted that long against her

Fdrugc

How many people will recognize that the Top3 are all coming from the same planet? o.o ...and that Nathaniel won the last 2 tournaments of his planet?

Tanean

Tftc!

Claro reyes

Is it cold in here? Chilly

jax rammus

I was so hoping Nat would pull something out of his ass for this

Borbino the great

Yeah but he still has “you see that direction? Now you don’t” doesn’t matter how fast she is if he just control alt deletes the area she’s in

Borbino the great

Excellent chapter! Can’t wait for the new Tournament Arc!

mitchell kaiser

Two big events in a row and we potentially find out who Chris is.

TheOne320

Well let’s see Nat was nerfed hella hard fighting tacita but even if he 1v1 her now I find it difficult for him to kill her he might win the fight but he can’t kill her he doesn’t have a poison ability like savant

frankie doerr

I have waited for this.. TFTC
