372 Sample Mini - Johnny Jenkins "I Walk On Guilded Splinters"

Conor here. Mike seems to have so much fun with his Classical Minis, that I wanted to try my hand. So please join me for a journey through the history of one of the most famous samples in hip-hop history, the drums from Johnny Jenkins "I Walk On Guilded Splinters", a fairly obscure cover of a fairly obscure song that was given new life when rappers discover that its drums kicked ass. Contains some early 90s rap language and attitudes, nothing you wouldn't encounter in Bob Honey. Hope you enjoy!

Here's a spotify playlist of all the music in here, SADLY the Kid Rock song is NOT on Spotify!!! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7dck1TvLCnXQ155fGAjcBo?si=a086275695b44174

Great ep! Thanks:) Have you guys ever considered riffing the lyrics to a song for one of your minis? E.g. Muskrat Love, the cake out in the rain song, etc.

Dawn Godfrey

That was a long walk just to get to an Oasis dis. I approve.

Totally random note: about 6 or 7 years ago, the art museum I used to work for acquired a very beautiful, very large painting of Venus and Cupid that originally belonged to the King of Prussia. The family that donated it to our institution? Mike D (of Beastie Boy fame) and his aunt.

Dude, I want to see your browser history list, because it's *MUCH* more interesting than mine.

Ain't nobody gonna tell Kid Rock how to live. Or rhyme. And hey, no cheap shots at Roxette! They were great.

Well done, Mr Lastowka, well done! (Wait, that doesn't work as well as Mark Burger, does it?) Very enjoyable bit of musical history .. concise and informative. Love the digs at those who sample rather than use their capable drummers. And it's good to know where Beck got his drum sample. As a commenter mentioned above, the Amen break has a very interesting history. Once you learn about the samples, they stick out like the Wilhelm scream! 🤣

Loved this!

Nice job, Conor!

I, for one, am looking forward to more episodes of This 372 Pages Life. Great production and very fun!

like npr, only cooler...

Johnathan Rabkin

Thank you for putting it together; it was a brief and joyous listen.

Reminds me of the "Amen break". https://youtu.be/v89CjsSOJ_c

That was probably 9 hours of work to get 9 minutes of audio, but the pure joy you could hear in every second of it made it all worth while.

Love this

Shane Robinson

Agreed.

Michael Thompson

This was great. More, please!

This was great! I forgot halfway that this is from a podcast about books. Awesome job, Connor!

Alex Cavazos

I look forward to the inevitable and epic hip hop/classical faceoff between the two hosts.

Rick Drake

This was entertaining and instructive—and I'm not just referring to Kid Rock's rhyming of "loner" and "boner." It sounded like something on NPR, only way cooler.

Manda

Such high production value... Mike and his weird fugues better step it up.

Erin M

"if you didn't, go listen to Oasis." Hey, that's uncalled for!

Moviegique

This was fun! I enjoy the Classical Minis; hope there are more of these. Recently had a good conversation with the 14-year-old about sampling.

Heather Crocetto

At long last! I have waited through so much classical music to finally get some RapChat!

Conor: "Nothing you wouldn't encounter in Bob Honey!" Jackals: *flee in all directions* (I'm sure we'll all listen, of course -- the use of "Bob Honey" as advertising just struck me funny! :-) )
