The demands of the industry are both highly stressful and encourage poor eating habits in order to keep the 'correct' body type, so girls wind up with a significant nutritional imbalance that causes the body to suspend ovulation until they're healthy again. Mike and Conor's horrified reactions are entirely accurate.
