Chapter 571 - One hour remains

My mana reserves are much lower now; that is how much it took to survive the island ‘landing’, along with the explosions, especially the one caused by the black mana destabilizing.

Still, I'm grateful to the monster for showing me what I can survive, and I thank it for reminding me not to underestimate my opponents no matter how capable I believe I am. As the hydra has proven, everyone has a trick up their sleeve.

One of the heads bursts open under strain as the beast overclocks its processing. The earth beneath it bulges and launches a barrage of stone javelins.

I don't even attempt to block it; instead, I teleport, appearing closer. Another head bulges as the hydra attempts to use that skill to disrupt my teleports and hold me in place, but I come prepared.

The attempt washes over me and restrains me, but I expand my [Mana Domain] and shrink [Eclipse] to my skin, breaking through and teleporting again, this time right in front of the hydra.

Another head explodes, and it teleports again.

Three heads remain, but another one regenerates in the meantime.

I watch it; I estimate the regeneration speed and observe the order in which it happens. I also note that the Onyxscale Hydra, for some reason, does not want to let me get close. I follow it on the ground, using Wraith Dance multiple times as I weave between the trees, attendees, and the attacks raining down on me.

Lightning, stone spears, ice, and flames. All are massively destructive, ripping the forest apart and killing anyone who gets too close, but the hydra keeps moving further away. It sacrifices multiple heads as it reaches the rough sea and stands on the surface. Lightning from the storm cracks through the air nearby, and rain begins to fall, accompanied by hurricane-like winds.

I form armor around my body, this time normal sized. I deploy the stored structure and compress it, all while keeping my eyes on the hydra. I watch every move the beast makes with its mana.

As we face each other, the hydra teleports again, deeper into the storm, and I follow. Lightning strikes my armor, the wind tries to hurl me through the air, and water crashes over me.

I can barely see the hydra because dark clouds cover the sky and a torrential downpour of rain ensues. But finally prepared, I charge using Pulser Stance, doing small jumps and evading attacks.

The hydra harnesses the lightning above and directs it at me, then compresses the water into laser-like streams to cut me apart.

I move unpredictably between the attacks and extend toward the storm. Within the spherical space surrounding us, everything grows still. The wind halts, the air stands still, and the surface of the sea becomes as serene as on a windless day. It becomes quiet, and the hydra roars.

Two of its heads twist and break apart as it tries to hold me in place again. But this time I break through immediately, moving closer with quick steps that don't even ripple the water around us.

It tries to teleport, but I release a burst of kinetic energy I had been gathering from the storm's turbulence. This burst strikes the head which shows signs of being wounded, causing the teleportation to fail. I send two more bursts and explode the second head while the beast protects itself against one of the attacks.

[Redistribution] surrounds the beast, and I amplify it with black mana. This time, I am the one holding it back, freezing all its movements.

Three heads remain, and I already know which one to target. Before it can react, [Empyrean Lance] pierces through another head.

My armor expands to match the beast, and I release my grip on the storm. Rain starts falling again, and the wind howls as waves ripple across the sea when I crash into it.

I grab one of the two remaining heads, my heart racing as it turns mana into kinetic energy. I squeeze tightly, crushing the head until it bursts.

Then I grab the last head, but before I can do anything, it explodes on its own. Blood sprays over me, sizzling as it burns through my mana, even as the rain begins washing it away.

It reaches my body, searing my skin and disrupting my mana. My shoulder and back burn as the flesh melts away, exposing bone. It would have spread further, but I disrupt the mana within the blood and break down the structure of the skill. The blood turns normal, just hot, red liquid.

I sense movement behind me and strengthen my armor.

Taking advantage of my distraction, a jet-like stream of water slashes diagonally across my armor, barely stopped by the final layer before it could cut me apart.

The regenerated hydra head bites into me, sending constant bursts of lightning through my armor. The storm fuels it, with bolts striking the hydra, surging through its body, and pouring into me.

Locking eyes with that piercing blue gaze, I reinforce my armor. I keep knitting and weaving mana, using Ley Lines to form new layers that redirect the lightning. More kinetic energy builds within me.

At that moment, my mind is clear and calm, with nothing remaining but my focus on this fight and my abilities.

As the tail strikes toward the breastplate of my armor to pierce my body, another arm grows from my back and catches it, holding it in place. My other two hands reach for the hydra's head, gripping it from both sides as I begin to squeeze.

The lightning intensifies, surging from the hydra's mouth as it blasts against my armor and toward my head. Layers crack and shatter one after another until only the final one remains, barely holding.

I don't even blink.

The beast's red blood keeps spraying against my mana, eating into it and sizzling despite the fierce wind and heavy rain. The lightning intensifies in desperation, striking me again and again as I rebuild my defenses.

Control slips from the hydra, and lightning tears into its body. Desperate to escape, it tries to pull away, but I hold tight, squeezing even harder.

A skull cracks, and the feedback of kinetic vibrations it causes reaches me. One of its eyes bulges out and bursts open.

With one final push, I power up the armor and slam my hands together, the skull in my palms bursting open in an explosion of flesh, brain, and blood.

Even with its heavy demands on my concentration, I slightly lift the seal around the Ignition Heart, letting it beat a few times. Each heartbeat unleashes a surge of thermal energy, golden flames erupting around me. They fuel my healing passive, evaporate the rain, and boil the sea below before crashing against the hydra’s body. The flames scorch the stumps of its seven severed heads, clashing against onyx scales again and again before finally breaking through.

The fourth special-grade beast has been defeated. The remaining special-grade beast has sensed the death of four special-grade beasts. It will know who killed them and their location at all times.

I teleport away and then again. The storm hits the beach and continues onto the mainland. Even the islands floating in the sky move under the oppressive winds. I check the time and confirm how much time I have.

Then I do not hunt any other monster. Instead, I reach the top of one of the islands and, in a similar way as before, reach the place where one of these huge hearts is located. Near it, I anchor one of my Ley Lines, and once outside, I stretch it towards another island where I also reach a similar room.

The two Ley Lines connect, and I continue to stretch that line. I start teleporting between the two locations, setting up inscriptions made out of Ley Lines or threads of mana that I weave and knit if I need more flexibility. I even break apart parts of the room and melt the mana-conductive materials, using them to add to the web of inscriptions I'm assembling.

Every few minutes, I check the timer until Lissandra releases the last beast, and at the right time, I create two javelins made of black mana, each of which pierces one of the hearts, only to start absorbing the mana again.

My inscriptions temporarily prevent it from eating into the web I just made, and the black mana instead targets an easier source: the mana generated by the heart.

A bit over one hour remains, and inside one of these rooms, I sit down and examine the process: the way black mana absorbs other mana, the difference in how it affects me with the Mana Wavelength Tyrant passive on or off, and the way black mana reacts with the current [Ley Line].

I examine the inscriptions making up the room as well: the ones around the heart, those around the hand, and another set powering the hand to heal the heart. The two sorts of liquid pumped into the head—one pale blue and the other as red as blood—capture my attention.

There are plenty of materials I don't even know yet and pathways carved in ways I never imagined. It's something I'm sure I could spend days, even weeks, examining and experimenting with.

At some point, I sense a familiar presence approaching, so I stay where I am. It doesn't rush, taking its time to reach me.

It enters the runners, passes through them, and sometimes stops for a minute or two to curiously examine something new it finds. There is even a point where it gets distracted and follows the beasts that appear just to observe them.

After a while, it seems to get bored and turns to head right where I am. When it gets close, I switch to my normal sight and watch Myrra enter through the hole in the metal door I made.

"Hello, feral one!"

"Hello, Myrra."

"You don't seem to be having a good day."

"It could be worse. Are you here with a message or just to mess around?"

"Hehe, I would say the latter. Is it safe to come closer?" she gestures at the pillar with the heart and my spear piercing through it.

"If you stay near me."

"Got it," she says, moving quickly in nimble, long steps, and sits on the ground next to me.

For the next five minutes, she stares at the pillar, the black spear, and the huge head. Her yellow eyes are wide open, and her tail sways from side to side.

"You never asked me for my subclass, feral one."

"I heard from a good source that it's super rude to ask these kinds of things."

"But you are rude."

"... What is your subclass, Myrra?"

"It's greed. Maybe that's why she likes me if you could call it that. You don't have to tell me yours; I already know." she flashes me a smile in which she shows her fangs.

"Okay." I nod.

Her hand moves up, and with the tips of her fingers, she carefully touches the scar that runs horizontally across her nose and a small part of her face—something I'm sure she could have removed if she wanted to.

In the light down here, the surface of the scar glistens differently from the rest of her skin. The light makes it appear deeper and redder.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you about Tess."

"I understand."

To my surprise, it seems to annoy her, her mood betrayed by the movement of her tail.

"I hate it when you use that concentration skill." She stands up swiftly. "I will see you after the event, and, feral one... good luck."

After that, she forfeits the event and disappears to watch from the outside, possibly under Lissandra's instructions.

Her words feel off... as if I have missed something.

***

Three. Two. One.

One hour remains, and for the first time, a notification from the system pops up.

Congratulations! You have survived until the final hour of the event. One hour remains.

The following beasts have been defeated:

Onyxscale Hydra

Stormscale Basilisk

Emberhorn Behemoth

Nightshade Stalker

The special-grade beast Witherclaw managed to survive and will now rapidly grow in strength according to the setting!

Thirty minutes before the event ends, its strengthening will accelerate rapidly.

Ten minutes before the end of the event, it will attain the rank of Champion and beyond!

Current points rewarded for defeating the Witherclaw: 15,000.

Points will increase by 500 per minute until the 30-minute mark, then by 1,000 per minute.

At the 10-minute mark, they will increase by 5,000 per minute.

At the 1-minute mark, they will increase by 10,000 per second.

At the 30-second mark, the point value of Witherclaw will increase by 100,000 per second.

I reread it a few times before I look at the other notification.

It is now possible to see the top 10 rankings of the second event!

In the holographic window in front of me, these rankings start to appear, placement after placement.

10th - 5,401 points - Brainiac

9th - 6,120 points - Grumpy

8th - 6,580 points - Tacita

7th - 6,751 points - Renji Hayakawa

Five placements appear, including names I don't recognize. I know not all of the "Kings" are suited for hunting multiple opponents, but it's good to see a Beyonder in the rankings. It clearly means that the top dog of the round isn't fixed, as every round must have a few people competing for the top spot.

6th - 6,940 points - Maxim Sarov

That Russian boy with shadow creatures and void energy is interesting. I hadn’t expected his abilities to be effective against large numbers of opponents.

As more names appear, I find myself thinking of trivial things to distract myself.

5th - 7,050 points - Agni

Another new face.

4th - 7,888 points - CarrotCake

I expected him to be this high.

3rd - 16,300 points - Victoria

So it was probably 10,000 for the special-grade beast, and Victoria earned the rest from the normal beasts?

When the second place appears, and I feel myself calm down.

2nd - 19,700 points - Yama

Good.

The last name spot appears. And next to it is a single-word name.

But it's not mine.

1st - 37,600 points - Hadwin

And one more. My placement

26,576th - 0 points - Noname

Author note: Hey! As I mentioned previously, I made some smaller changes to previous chapters to make this chapter work. The changes were done to chapter 566 and 567 - I mostly edited two notifications and expanded on reaction from Nat.
If you notice something I have missed and that could screw up with what have happened in this chappy, please let me know!

Comments

I don't think she stole any of his kills and it's just some kind of manipulation on her part, he just sees it that way, otherwise we are just letting her do whatever even if it does not make sense, I don't like the "she is an absolute" explanation.

Audrey WJ

Okay okay. I can see how she may have kill stolen some of the beast, but why didnt he get credit for killing the hydra or the beasts while running around. The only way I could thinkg of that would put him at 0 is if he got negative points from people dying.

BJ

Isn't 26k people more than exist in the tutorial right now?

Ivan Jelenić

I mean, she legit has his first girlfriend (I know nat is weird about this stuff but still) and is holding her hostage, nat can't die, and I feel like this is deff a play she'd make as a teacher/antagonist, still agree is gonna make nat very upset even if he understands the motive, not to mention everyone else

P K

I feel like this show of skill is a bit too much even for Liss. I mean she is nowhere near her previous level of power. She should still have a lot of restrictions on her. I get that she was an Absolute and what not, I get that she could have easily stolen the kill of the special grades, but of ALL the beasts in the islands? INVIDUALLY killing every monster without effecting anything else so that Nat doesn't notice it? Or has the system not counted those kills? It seems to absurd to me. I get that having someone like her in the story makes everything more exciting, but there should be limit imposed by the system on beings like her, she shouldn't have so much freedom/power. The more we go forward with the story, the further away Champion/Absolute level of power seem to be getting, even with everything that Nat has going for him I can't see him reach it with how much Liss is improving from their fight in the pyramid.

Carlo

I'm aware of the intention, the reason it leaves a bad aftertaste is because there is a level of twisted sense to her actions which is why I can't fully hate it, doesn't mean I have to like it either tho, that said it's good writing so you have me hooked regardless. All I hope is that he gets some major reward aside from Tess's survival for his troubles because the tensions are running real high rn. Would also love to see some minion time because my boy Nat is gonna need either some down time or an immense crash out after all this. Either way you go tho, I trust the story is gonna come out well looking forward to the next chapter, this novel is literally how I start or end my day nearly every day.

Daniel is ŁØNE

Thats the intention- she said it clearly: She doesn’t mind being villain in his way.

anonymous patreon

Perhaps the beast notifications were only for the individual that killed them and the system notifications are for everyone?

David

Okay hire the hell did she kill steal the island crashes?

Nachotoad

This was surprising but this seems like a dick move, even by Liss standards. She is psychologically driving him into a corner when he is already backed against a wall, which would normally be fine but since it's not Nat's life at risk this does leave a bad after taste. I hope that the gains from this experience will be worth it because this feels malicious in the worst way.

Daniel is ŁØNE

Liss is that one party member in raids who needs on all loot

Val the mysterious Jedi

That sneaky bitch!

Robert Reilly

Liss KS all his kills

Arnon Parenti

Doing the math here, he’ll have to fight a semi-champion to win this thing. He also has to make sure no one kills it before then. Good luck my boy because you’re going to need it.

Tee

She needs to manipulate the System in order to escape the Tutorial. I assume this is her practicing for the future. Screwing over Nat to further his training is just a side benefit.

Meowgrr

Nope, that would mean Liss kill stole every single one of his kills.....fucking monster

Memelord Steambath

So Lissandra kill stole each monster from Nat from the moment he started to now, that's some crazy Mana manipulation. I don't want to do the math, but I bet the mean kitty will have to be very powerful before it's worth enough points to get 1st

im Panda

Did liss kill steal somehow

Death56

Cerim,I love you so much for not using this chapter as the last weekend cliffhanger. I'm 100% sure I would had died from a heart attack.

Antony Silva

LoL brilliant; I wonder if Cerim thought of this

Mark Bullock

Remember she is just as petty as Nat. And while she refused at the time to name him absolute candidate she treats and is training him to be one. And as...from the sounds of it...the strongest absolute to have been, she is clearly a little training crazy

Corac

I was speed reading and missed how he counted down(id assumed he already wasn't first) so I missed that oh shit moment... But he still got me with cliff

Mark Bullock

I can understand hadwin; but 0points??? Did he lose points from killing a few attendees?

Mark Bullock

Woah! Woah! Woah! What?!? Let's gooooo!!!

jj

I'm hoping we get at least a little explanation about this or something, liss is just escalating after escalating to force his growth I assume, but it feels idk forced for her to just keep adding random conditions because she said so on top of her initial ones, I know people with power can do whatever they want but this is starting to feel either excessive or like she has a grudge against him

EDMANGO

10th, 9th, 8th and 7th are shown and then he says "Five placements appear". What am I misreading?

David McCreight

Read it again.

Zaim İpek

I know, I reread them. I’m saying that the announcements about the deaths of the Special Grade Beasts seem like notifications. I know what Nat means when he says “for the first time”, but it’s just not clear why the beast death announcements are in a different category from System Notifications.

David McCreight

FOUND it... it bugged me aswell! "Easy difficulty: 1869/2000 Normal difficulty: 734/1000 Hard difficulty: 330/500 Hell difficulty: 56/250" = 2,989 participants alive overrall 3750 Chapter 60 soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo to get 26,576 people would seem hard... considering I remember that a lot of people from easy difficulty left also remember that this is +500 chapters earlier and lot of them are dead not 50% but more then 25% have left or died... so how do we get "26,576" because lets assume every round is equally healthy with an assumed 35% less people then that 2989... that is only "1942,85 x 10 isn't nearly enough so either there are rounds that ARE a lot more healthy or I'm assuming way higher death/leaving rates then there was... because to get to get 26576 every round needs 2657,6 people left... and that just isn't true for sure because the last number for easy I remember was 11XX something... so what gives? edit: So what David said... the WHOLE population of the tournamet isn't enough... like wtf? Also I don't remember that number what Chapter was that in? because that isn't more then 24k not even close to being 25k and absolutely not enough to be 26576

Ansordia

I read it more like he is placing lines INSIDE the armor that really helps the armour but the armour itself isn't 100% made out of that material more like 5-10%, but yea the increase in his ability to make leylines in reality seems even then a bit much.

Ansordia

Easy Difficulty - 13,961 Normal Difficulty - 7,021 Hard Difficulty - 2,100 Hell Difficulty - 269 Beyond - 74 Those are the numbers from the start of this tournament, I believe it was 5000/round at the start

David

For sure we're going to get one tomorrow, doubt its gonna be left up to the reader to infer how she stole his points

Sail

If you read the author notes on Thursday you'd know, Cerim explained that some changes were made to the last few chapters to increase the quality of future chapters

Sail

Tftc!!!

Edmund Dillon

You lose an unknown amount of points iirc for killing other contestants, and im pretty sure he saw BenDover and killed him out of spite or whatever the hell

Aeon

I'm sure that in her mind she is the most normal and sane person in the tutorial.

Zaim İpek

Thank you!

Andrew

“Five placements appear” - but you only list four.

David McCreight

She specifically said at the 25 minute mark it would be "strong enough to kill everyone else here", meaning it would br up to Nat alone to deal with it. Nat has to wait until the 22 minute mark at least before killing it in order to take back first place from Liss (the Witherclaw will be worth 38k points then)

Moonfrost

“for the first time, a notification from the system pops up” - but even just earlier this chapter a notification popped up when he killed the hydra?

David McCreight

TFTC!!!

vEnviouz

how is it 0, how did she kill steal, I think its a good setup to force him to act or break, I also hope the comment from myrra was yet another push to not turn off his emotions since he misses stuff when he does but I think we'd need an explanation on how lis did what she did rather than just treating her like some god that can flip the script just because, it was really good to limit her power in the early chapters since she was reliant on external mana,

FarFromLogic

I believe this is implying Liss did something to mess with his system and keep this tournament round from recognizing any of his kills so far, presumably because she wants him to earn all of his points from the Witherclaw and earn enough from it alone to win the round. This also seems to hint or suggest that his complete lack of any system notifcations is due to whatever was done that prevented him from gaining points.

Zaim İpek

She just stole his kill. She can kill all the monsters 1ms before Nat would have.

Bob

Maybe she put some people in the way of the falling islands to reset his points.

blaw

He can’t see kills or points so he assumes system fuckery for both, which is logical but a pitfall she cleverly used to take his kills with him none the wiser. Maybe if he had talked with the other participants, he would have known they could see their kills, and that would have been a hint? Maybe this is a lesson in the pitfalls of single minded “focus”? All I know is Liss is devious for this.

Madje Tobi Marc'Avent Tchona

So the question is, was Liss telling the truth when she said that it would become impossible to kill at the 25 minute mark. So does Nat need to quickly get enough other points to be able to kill it at or before the 25 minute mark. Or does he have to grow enough to be able to kill it afterwards. My bet is the latter, but now that he understands all his kills have been stolen up to the point it’s possible Liss won’t continue doing it.

Woojoe

I don’t get it. After all this fighting and killing he has 0 points ??? 😳

Wojciech Waleśkiewicz

My bet is that Liss wants nathaniel to beat the witherclaw when Its points are higher than her total points. That will be the only way nathaniel can win by a landslide. Instead of limiting him by saying he can’t use his passives, she limits him in this way.

LawBear2005

Since I'm like this... In Excel or Google Sheets, put the remaining number of minutes in cell A2 and the remaining number of seconds in B2. We'll ignore seconds until we get to under one minute remaining. (You must say 0 minutes remaining to start counting seconds.) Points for defeating Witherclaw at that number of minutes or seconds remaining are given by: =15000+(MIN(30,(60-MIN(A2,60)))*500)+(MIN(20,(30-MIN(A2,30)))*1000)+(MIN(9,(10-MIN(A2,10)))*5000)+IF(A2>0,0,(MIN(30,(60-MIN(B2,60)))*10000)+(30-MIN(B2,30))*100000) It allows for both minutes and seconds remaining to be zero, since Cerim writes like that. :) That would be 3,395,000 points. So assuming Nat can figure out and prevent what has lead to Liss stealing his points, and that she does nothing to earn any further points, he only needs 38,000 points to win. He can do this by defeating Witherclaw with 22 minutes remaining - well before it attains Champion rank.

Joe Woodhouse

if liss kill stole all nats kills then the witherclaw wont be able to track nat

Mads jæger

Yeah, and that's 8 minute after it became strong enough to kill everyone here.

Poutine Au Syrop d'érable

Idk about that. We do see her use mana in a way he can't even detect. And she is constantly getting stronger. She also maybe placed something on him to remote kill.

Poutine Au Syrop d'érable

There is one thought going through nats mind, as biscuit would say “asshole”

Oaktree

So, Is Noname officially inside the #0, or is that we he can see for himself/ a change. Cause that means liss killed 3 and then a lot of small ones, right? Ahhhh. It's not 0th place, 26000 points... Liss kill stealed him everytime! Is there even 26000 people in the tournament? It's like 2500 per rounds? What was the numbers again.

Poutine Au Syrop d'érable

Whaaaaaat

Venno

it seems unlikely even for Liss to be able to do all that all unnoticed, it's more likely she somehow manipulated the System to take the points from him seems a bit far-fetched, but then we've seen her do stuff with attendee statuses and the 5th Floor discipleship

Moonfrost

Lot of kill stealing there miss cockroach. Good luck Nat!!!

Jeb

She killed all of his enemies

Belmont Igneul

Ley Lines Knitting and Weaving for armor and inscriptions, Nat is already at that level? Wasn't solidifying a single line really hard? Did I miss something, miss understand whats happening, or boy grew that fast? Cause the fully solidified looked to be at eclipse++ level of potential and power.

Poutine Au Syrop d'érable

It does seem like Liss stole all his points... Talk about a monster - killing all the beasts from the floating island drops without him noticing. She's the sixth special beast lol. It's kinda interesting that current Nat's basically fighting the past Nat. The last kill is where it all needs to happen. At 30min till the end of event, the Witherclaw will be worth 30k. Then extra 1k per minute. To be "safe" and dominate the event Nat will need around a 10k buffer between him and Liss - so around 50k... 10min till the end of event, just as the beast turns into a Champ. I dunno, hard to say if Liss considers herself as part of the event - maybe just having a slightly bigger score will be enough (so 22-20 min before end of event).

zoarian

Liss definitely stole his points, no way "Hadwin" is at 37k points otherwise

Moonfrost

This just feels needlessly edgy tbh

Sunto

...I... why didn't I expect that?

Le Frog

that is actually so evil, Nat has to wait until at least the 22-minute mark to kill the Witherclaw if he is to place higher than Liss

Moonfrost

Aww poor Myrra just wanted to genuinely apologize to Nat, even if it meant he was a little mad. She knows when he’s not himself at least, and seems to put it off for later. If I remember correctly, Lissandra said that Nat has 5 minutes to kill the beast after the 30 minute mark. Or at least, the beast would become “strong enough to kill everyone” at that point. However, the most amount of points he could get for that would be 35,000. I assume Lissandra is poaching his kills somehow (and will continue to do so for all other beasts), and is taunting Nat into killing the Witherclaw after her arbitrary time-limit. Without a doubt, he’s going to take that challenge.

Brady Fiola

Lissaaaandraaaa what did you dooo

Scraser

Is it becausenof Smiley?

M van Dongen

Stealandra

RainyCats

I think Lissandra stole his points

Hemi Rigby-Curtis

How?

M van Dongen

Cerim you are amazing I would never expect this

Sadyix

Damn, how did that happen. Did he kill too many tutorial attendees when the island dropped?

RainyCats

Tftc

BrokenBulb65

Lol. Lissandra the killstealer.

Gio

Wtf

Aoth the Arcane

Thanks for the chapter and letting us know what was changed!
