My Immortal - Episode 1
Added 2020-06-26 18:01:31 +0000 UTCThe artists/works to which we compare this 2006 fanfic include:
- Shakespeare, several times
- Dickens
- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
- The Bible
- Thelonius Monk
- And more!
Conor unveils his Cockney <?> accent, and it is QUITE something.
Also, we open with an audio recording of one of the first meetings between Mike and Conor and it turns out to be shockingly prescient!
Reading Assignment for next time: Read through chapter 35.
NOTE: General content warning for this book as it contains everything you'd expect from internet fanfic circa 2006 as well as some scenes of self harm.

I read crappy books for fun (One Night in the House of Creepy Santas!) and I am finding My Immortal more of a slog than Shadow Moon. I guess we all read crappy books for fun here ...

2020-06-29 23:52:02 +0000 UTCMy son loves this movie and we have the DVD, where they go through images from the original (much shorter) Burton story/"poem" it was based on. I feel your disclaimer, though. The only Burton project I myself fangirl out for is Pee-Wee's big Adventure.

2020-06-28 17:54:23 +0000 UTCAlso, minor correction: While Henry Selick was the director of NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, Tim Burton was heavily involved as the creator of the story and characters and the movie's producer; I guess he was too busy with the BATMAN sequel to oversee the long and arduous animation process. Same with CORPSE BRIDE, where he was actually credited as co-director that time. And for his latest stop motion flick FRANKENWEENIE, he was finally credited as the sole director. (I must emphasize that I'm not trying to fanboyishly defend Tim Burton, especially after his last decade-plus of live action movies.)

2020-06-28 17:26:32 +0000 UTC"Hajimemashite" is the correct spelling of a Japanese greeting, but doesn't work in this context. It's one that you would only use when you're meeting someone for the first time. The root of the expression literally means "first time; beginning". It'd be like if Mike walked into the Rifftrax office and Conor was standing there. "Nice to meet you gurl." he said happily (he spex English so do i. dat menz 'はじめまして’ in english).

2020-06-28 12:39:01 +0000 UTCI think I chose the wrong one to try to read before an episode. I've been with 372 since day one. I read Ready Player One and the Tek War Book back when I was dumber. I've tried to read My Immortal but it's just horrible. I think I'll just continue listening and wait for the next "book" that's written by a normal human so I can follow along without cringing, whinging and feeling so much hate inside my soul for another human writing something so terrible. God it's awful and I can't take it after 20 pages.

2020-06-27 00:28:35 +0000 UTCYou guys bringing up Sexman was a real "Chazz Palminteri dropping the coffee cup" moment for me. You're totally right, if Sexman can be genuine, the possibility of this story being genuine is very much in play now, even though that upcoming Marty McFly cameo reeks of potential trollery. And I'm so glad that I wasn't the only one who noticed the copy-and-pasted parts of the story, because I was scared for a moment that I was rereading the same passage over again and that I was in the midst of heat stroke. Great start on the story, guys; I told my buddy from college who introduced me to this "book" that you guys were reading this, and he sends his condolences.
