Episode 75 - Cuz My Beeper Kept Beepin'
Added 2020-05-08 21:49:47 +0000 UTCLooking for good writing in a Dan Brown book is a lot like looking for a sock in a bedroom the size of Texas while sewage spews forth out of a crystal decanter. And this section of DIGITAL FORTRESS is no exception.
As the book theoretically reaches the stage where it will have a point, questions still remain such as: Who should we trust, Hale or Strathmore? Do earrings count as needles? Does Genius mean the same thing to Dan Brown as it does the rest of us? How many times can our hosts use the word "Pubis"?
Pour yourself a silent mug of Guatemalan java and enjoy our latest episode. For next time read thru Chapter 100.

The fact that the assassin’s deafness doesn’t inform his character or affect the plot in any way is absolutely infuriating. My BA is in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies. Like, being Deaf impacts people so much that they create distinct cultures. There’s an entire field of study dedicated to it. Pick any other “disability” if you must.

2025-07-31 23:58:58 +0000 UTCCan we get a ruling from an actual contractor as to whether or not it’s a huge hassle to put in a bathroom stall vs a urinal?

2020-05-13 02:18:14 +0000 UTCI feel like there was a period around the turn of the century where novels started using Brand Names and then it died out after a few years. I always found it jarring because products were Always Capitalized and it ruined my immersion.

2020-05-13 00:30:34 +0000 UTCI would guess it more often happens in a humorously wrong context than in a right one these days, to the point where Mike and Conor aren't sure how the right one is supposed to go.

2020-05-12 19:07:21 +0000 UTCI about died laughing during the yak discussion. Why is the word "yak" so inherently funny?

2020-05-12 18:09:53 +0000 UTCSkyPager is a brand name page from SkyTel. PepperGard is a real thing, too. Dan Brown isn't being particularly creative... maybe he's just a sell-out for stupidly-named products?

2020-05-10 23:54:43 +0000 UTCThat was for Ready Player One, which (believe it or not) actually had fanfic! Pretty sure it’s the only book they’ve covered with enough of a following to produce the real thing...

2020-05-09 21:07:41 +0000 UTCThe gag with a chair being propped under a door handle and then the door opening outward literally happens in The Big Lebowski! 😅

2020-05-09 19:33:44 +0000 UTCIn the early days of the podcast, didn't you pull fan fic from a website?

2020-05-09 02:35:41 +0000 UTC“Young sophisticate” made me think of Alicia Silverstone’s character in Clueless. Roughly the right time period. I read Seventeen in the 1980s and sophisticated is not the first word I would associate with it. Also, why would either Dan Brown or his protagonist even go for that simile in the first place??! This is the level of stupid we’ve reached by doing a close reading of Dan Brown. I hope you two are happy with yourselves!

2020-05-08 23:19:21 +0000 UTCOK, I saw Fonzie do the chair gag on "Happy Days" once and ever since then, I've been trying it: If you have a chair that's exactly the right height, you can lean it at a 45 degree angle under the handle so that you can't push it open without breaking the chair. But YEARS of experience has taught me that very few chair/door combinations actually work out. Still, my research continues.

2020-05-08 23:05:29 +0000 UTCHey...maybe if you're a couple days out and haven't received enough fanfic, put out a call. I've never submitted any myself but I wouldn't be surprised if people stopped submitting because it seemed like you were getting WAY more than you could use in previous weeks.
