Episode 60 - This Podcast is now named Thorn Drumheller

Step into the WillowVerse for our first discussion of George Lucas & Chris Claremont's "SHADOW MOON"! Things get sexy right off the bat, and never let up (if you consider descriptions of hair that is one color but has streaks of another color in it to be sexy. We do.)

We'll meet some of our favorite characters and quickly say goodbye to them. We'll be beset upon by verbal jugular japery on the par of "He who smelt it dealt it." And we'll likely confuse Death Dogs for Devil Dogs at least a dozen times.

Plus, a fine showing from Mike in Real or FanFic, and a surprisingly music set of interludes. For next time, Read thru chapter 2 (page 100 in the trade paperback!)

Also, it is #ThankYouPatrons day, and we figured that posting a new ep would be the best thanks we could offer, but while we're here, let us offer our sincere thanks. We could not, and would not, do this podcast without your ears, support, and talents! It's a ton of fun getting to know you guys has been a great part of that! So thanks for taking this dumb journey with us. Here's to sixty more episodes!

Comments

I am SOOOO glad that you guys were as confused by this as I was. This episode really helped me reset sense of sanity.

Mark Burger

Okay which one of you motherfuckers was the one with the squeaky porch swing in the background? 😝😂 Also speaking of people with weird favorite movies, I have a friend whose favorite movie is unironically Gods of Egypt. She told me once that she had watched it after a while and “remembered what a great movie it was all over again.” Needless to say I was confused.

Carson Heschle

This is very minor and silly, but I had no idea that Devil Dogs (the snacks) were a northeastern US thing. I had such nostalgia-whiplash over the idea that someone hadn't tasted the weirdly-dense-yet-still-delicious lump of hydrogenated corn syrup and cocoa that was Devil Dogs that I forgot to be totally bewildered about what was flashback and what was real...

Bridget K

Mike and I went to an Islands in SD one time after we watched one of the Twlight movies in the theater

372 Pages We'll Never Get Back

Ha! I used to work at an Islands... and yes, I’m pretty sure the bar had regulars....

Taylor Conner

Things I shouldn't admit publicly: I didn't recognize the song. I had to look it up. And it's not that I don't know anything at all about the Beatles - I could easily name 30 songs - but apparently, not this one.

Mike Truman

The pauses in Blackbird/Canonical Bang make it even funnier.

Emily Brown

Librarian here and I co-sign. Trade paperbacks are largely for non-genre stuff: lit fic, “chick lit” “historical fiction” the occasional mystery etc Sometimes there are fantasy/sci-fi paperbacks, but those are usually reserved for big name authors (LeGuin, Butler, Bradbury, George RR Martin, Tolkien...you get the idea.) I wish Shadow of the Moon WAS in trade paperback. It’s my favorite format. They are cheaper than a hard cover but they still hold up pretty well.

Emily M

Well... somehow I’ll have to scrub this from my brain the next time my son wants to watch Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

Elizabeth Clark

Fodder for 'People Who Canonically Banged pt 2': *Chewbacca *Lady Elaine Fairchild *Superman *Goofy *Daniel Striped Tiger *Bob Ross *Samwise Gamgee

Christian

Maybe that's also why Sorsha and Madmartigan are killed in the fist chapter Alien 3-style. That or this is just a book idea that Claremont had sitting around and it was crammed into the Willowverse for no apparent reason (obviously not marketing, since it's clearly not marketed as a Willowverse novel).

Urstoff

The book flaps don't even mention Willow or that it's related to the movie (unless you happen to remember the name Elora Danan); surely there wasn't some copyright issue. Willow was made by Lucasfilm. We need an oral history of this book, somebody call Chris Claremont and interview him.

Urstoff

Oh god, they can't possibly do that right?? there are two more books!!

372 Pages We'll Never Get Back

I'm glad it wasn't just me having a hard time understanding what was going in this book.

Alex V.

With the whole "for the duration of this dream, we'll call you Thorn Drumheller" thing, I worry that things will go full Bob Newhart.

Maki

That's for sure, but I still get a kick out of the charm and effort put into those special effects that's kind of lost nowadays in our CGI marketplace. Heck, I'd prefer that claymation robot over that last TERMINATOR movie any day of the week.

Jesse Shade

No worries! We just want to get it fixed, Mike's looking at it now, thinks it was on his end

372 Pages We'll Never Get Back

The special effects for Willow did look bad on my Ultra 4K TV, but I find that's not unusual when watching an older special effects movie. The definition really exposes the tricks. Terminator, for example, looks hilariously terrible.

Mike Truman

So damn...I realize I probably sounded like I was complaining earlier (in reference to the squeaking sound) and came off sounding ungrateful. This podcast is a complete joy and I look forward to every new episode...and I say that with a complete lack of asperity.

JoshG

Oh, the magic bag that you guys mentioned Willow/thorn having that you could store large things in? That's a Bag of Holding stolen directly from Dungeons and Dragons.

Mary Jeschke

They cancelled the first one we ordered for Mike as well. Maybe they're so surprised anyone is ordering it that they're heads are Scanners-ing

372 Pages We'll Never Get Back

I'm having so much trouble GETTING the stupid book! I've ordered it twice. The first one from amazon for some reason decided my address is undeliverable and sent me a refund (I've been an amazon customer for years and my address has not changed in over a decade). NOW the ebay copy I purchased made it as far as iowa (i am in illinois) before inexplicably turning around and heading back to the state it was sent from! I am seriously starting to think this book is cursed.

Mary Jeschke

When did it happen?

372 Pages We'll Never Get Back

Listening now, so forgive me if this is mentioned later in the recording, but WTF is that squeaking noise in the background? Does one of you need to oil your desk chair or is there a hyperactive hamster next to the mic?

JoshG

Ever the pedant, I'm gonna correct you on one point because I used to work in a bookstore. "Trade paperback" refers to the larger size paperback, roughly 5"x8". I highly doubt they ever printed a trade version of this book. The "mass market" book is the smaller (and cheaper) paperback that is roughly 4"x7". Sorry.

JoshG

Just what I needed for the commute this morning- A new episode of the best podcast on the internet, "372 Thorn Drumhellers We'll Never Get Back."

Kerry S.

They (Claremont) spent almost a full page, iirc, talking about the world being a sphere. It's almost as if they were prescient on today's little youtube contigent of flat earthers.

Kerry S.

I think the planet being round being a bigger deal than the magical alternate dimensions is supposed to be an aspect of the fantasy setting. "Oh, sure, the ley lines and the fairy realms, every wizard's apprentice's drinking buddy knows about those. Tell me something I don't know." "The world is a sphere." [spit take]

Theodore Lehman

I am right there with Mike on not having any idea of what's going on where. I mentioned in the Discord that between Claremont leaving all the setting to the artist and Lucas making planets a single ecosystem, and having read a bit ahead, we are in for a rough ride location-wise.

Anonymous Person

...and before comments of "It's fantasy!" - I wasn't the one introducing concepts of physics like planetary mechanics, gravity, and a spherical world!

Anonymous Person

I need to send a reader email about that opener where the dragon is flying at 1000 mph or so, beyond the speed of sound - my vision of Willow trying to cling to his back as supersonic wind, sonic booms and compressed to red hot air thunder and scream about them changes the vision of that "pleasant ride."

Anonymous Person

I love the songs! ❤️❤️

Kelly Long

I my god, I got Gordon'd again!!!! But seriously, look at Betty. I'd take any bets against ;)

372 Pages We'll Never Get Back

The opening sentence telling us that Willow was riding a dragon is noteworthy because by the time the dragon was mentioned again, I had forgotten about it.

Theodore Lehman

John is probably right about the Willow to Thorn transition, but it could have been a far more comical misunderstanding between Lucas and Claremont. Let's say the two had lunch and Lucas laid out his vision of the Willowverse...but never explicitly told Claremont to use the characters from the movie. Six months later, Claremont comes back with this complete story and now they have to scramble to connect it back to the movie. Claremont concedes his dapper Brownie, but refuses to rename Thorn due to a series of puns in the novel that only work with "Thorn". Lucas, having already cashed the check, shrugs his assent.

Mike Truman

It’s funny, I watched Willow last night and I actually said out loud “Warrick Davies has unusually long hands.” That’s weirdly the one detail they got that matches his appearance in the film. Also, there weren’t any eagles in Willow except for when the Brownies steal the baby. They are riding what could either be an eagle or a falcon.

Zach Dewoody

Bamm Bamm was adopted! Therefore, we don’t know 100% that either Betty or Barney have ever banged. Now Fred and Wilma on the other hand...

Zach Dewoody

Good job Mike! Rob's fanfic was realer than real.

M Williams

I'm gonna say that my omitting the opening theme was an artistic choice. HOWEVER, I'm going to repost it with the music and you can decide whether my original choice was correct. -- MJN
