While I was doing some background reading for this story I came across this rather unusual form. It’s posted on a very old-looking site dedicated to diving with a particular mix of gases known as Trimix. The purpose of the form? Ostensibly it’s to be given to anyone who plans a risky dive without sufficient training or experience, so that they can pre-approve the recovery of their own lifeless body.
Here’s an extract:
“When my lifeless body is retrieved, the disposition of my gear is left up to the recovery team. I will leave my car keys and wallet with this form in the attached plastic bag. Any money found in my belongings goes to the recovery team as compensation for their efforts. I further acknowledge my impending demise is solely due to my lack of functional frontal lobes and in no way hold the diving community responsible.”
Obviously, the form comes with a rather heavy dose of sarcasm… but it makes its point well. Deep diving and cave diving are both extraordinarily dangerous. This video documents what can happen to even very experienced and capable divers… so maybe it’s a good idea to underline the danger for those who are a little less experienced.
