Family emergency and writing thoughts
Added 2023-10-04 00:20:17 +0000 UTCWe just found out that my father-in-law is in the hospital. He has several issues, but is stable, but I wasn't able to write today since we went to see him and make sure everyone is okay, and see what we could do to help.
Also, I'm heading to Seattle on Friday to attend All Bethel Day, where I'm actually going to be featured (with signs and everything!) so I probably won't have a chapter that day, either.
So, here's an interesting writing thing that I actually didn't run into nearly as much with LF: world building. Zoey's world is basically ours, with just enough added tech to allow the story to happen. Aspen's world was built on our existing games, and how programming/play/game mechanics works, with a little bit of cultural stuff that was based on real life as well.
Kaz's world, however, is completely new. I'm building his whole culture from the ground (ha!) up, and have to consider everything from his metaphors (he wouldn't say "as bright as the sun", and has never seen a tree) to his language, to how cultivation works in his world (this is particularly complex). I'm also researching Chinese words and culture, and while I know a bit about Japanese culture, Chinese is new to me. Even though it's just a block in the wall, and I'm altering it to work with what I need, those alterations should be deliberate, not mistakes. I don't want to mess it up.
All of this means that every chapter of Broken Knife takes (on average) twice as long as a similar length chapter of LF, which is why I'm not managing to get ahead. I just can't write two chapters in a day yet. I will get there, and eventually I'm gonna catch up on these 'missed' chapters (I owe you four now), but it won't be just yet. I'm really sorry!
