2023-08-13 11:20:57 +0000 UTCActually when you watch the early episodes of one piece, Luffy always tries goofy attacks and messes it up and makes mistakes. For example Arlong Park when he anchors his legs into the floor to throw the monster... He always wanted to fight with 100% control of freedom and imagination but his body couldn't keep up with it. It happened in almost every early fight if you go back and watch. Like he tried eating crocodile in alabasta, or when he drinks all the water but he leaks it out, as another example. We lost that type of Luffy as the series went on and I think that is actually the secret reason a lot of people prefer the pre-timeskip. But Gear 5 is Luffy's answer to his fighting style. 2023-08-13 07:57:53 +0000 UTCThe problem comes when it just straight up isn't what happened in the manga, they had to change the ordering of panels and entirely change stuff that oda drew because of the shit they added, instead of him getting sprung up by kaido's smash and returning with his springiness from him getting smushed, they had to change it because they wanted to add luffy attacking back inbetween kaido beating his ass. So you end up not only getting random filler attacks you also have them reworking stuff oda drew to fit their narrative, it's like the opposite of fishman island where toei made luffy struggle way more against hody jones, there were plenty of inbetween shots in this episode where they didn't change the tone or flow of the episode while still buying time. Oda didn't downplay kaido here so I don't know why toei feels the need to.

The nice thing about Bleach, JJK, and everything else is that it’s all new to him. But One Piece he can’t go into a single scene without mentioning or comparing it to the manga. Even with Kid he’s already talking about Shanks. It’s not really a bad thing, but definitely makes the OP anime reactions not as fun.
