long time no see!
ANYC is just around the corner and i've been trying to slip in a print or two at the last minute. i usually come up with at least one new thing each year i've attended so im like..forcing myself at gunpoint to do SOMETHING lol.
i'm very grateful to everyone who's stuck around despite lack of posts. a combination of juggling work/life balance and being in a massive art rut kind of made art the furthest thing from my mind. i still drew stuff! just not as much. the time away from art wasn't completely miserable though! i ended up spending more time with friends and family and it was just really nice!
my art juices are sloooooooowly returning. and while i don't think i'll be drawing a new thing every day, i hope to at least go back to actually finishing things at a decent frequency LMAO
TL;DR: i'm back to get anyc stuff done. juggling work/life is hard/i want to pick up my tablet pen again.
onto the actual pic:
i really really REALLY wanted to make a SPYxFAMILY print. i picked it up during my hiatus and like...5 or so chapters in i knew i was legally obligated to draw something for it. at first i wanted to make a faux movie poster a la my part 2 print, and while it did serve as a sort of blueprint, i ended up scrapping the movie aspect of it early on.

i really liked the idea of anya's telepathy being depicted as rings. my first idea was to sort of have loid and yor switch off between their "true" selves and their "personas" within the rings.

(eventually i'd merge the rings so instead of two rings "radiating" off anya it'd be a single one)
i still like this composition, but it ended up being too long for an 11x17 print LOL and also..really cluttered? i might tweak it and make it it's own pic eventually but i decided to simplify it a bit.

glorious chicken scratch.
i'm starting to kind of piece together a comp i like with this one. we're still leaning into the movie poster theme, but i have a really good idea of what i want it to look like in my head. i definitely wanted to have a lot of negative space present. it sells the vintage look and is just interesting to look at imo.

actually making the pic legible ^
the final clean ups v

for pretty much the entirety of the pic i intended to have loid in that little comic book panel box. i even color comped it that way. it wasn't until the very last minute (right before working on the final final pic) did i realize...it didn't actually make that much sense.
anya, bond and yor were out in the open to represent their role as main protagonists within the story, but loid was contained like the rest of the side characters. he also had a limited color palette, which was something the other protags didn't have. so the box was scrapped.

with box ^

boxless ^
his palette was hideous but i decided to fix it in the final lol
working on the final was easy. i did end up making lots of minor tweaks and switched up some colors. i complained earlier about loid having a limited palette but he ended up having one anyway (kinda). in my defense i wanted the colors to go from warm at the top to cool at the bottom. yor's palette ended up changing a bit too, she was paler, but it ended up looking nice so i'm fine with it lmao
after that it's just making the print look weathered/vintage via halftones and filters.

and voila!! one SPYxFAMILY print.
i dont have a timelapse/.PSD file for you all unfortunately, but i hope you enjoyed my word vomit!!
see you soon!
