PIN Codes Required for Credit Cards in Japan!

Comments

Good idea for sure. I just started to use tap during Covid. Awhile back visiting on Vancouver Island, I took out cash from my bank, I left the bank & was 20 steps away from the bank & received a cell phone call from the head office in Toronto asking me if was travelling and had I made any cash withdrawals….. 4,000 kilometres from home. Cheers. Jerry

Yes, the extra security is a good thing, isn't it, Brian

That is standard company policy for curbing fraud, anyway. Before traveling, I used to have to notify my credit card company of my itinerary; dates of departure and return, and locations to be visited. Now they just tell me to use "chip & PIN" instead of merely tapping. I once received a warning when I used my card for gas in a city 200 km away from home. They needed an immediate reply or my card would be locked. I can't imagine a worse fate while overseas than to have to deal with a credit card company back home after your card had been locked for security reasons. So... it seems sensible. When you think about it, if someone finds your card they can tap the heck out of it and run up quite a bill before you realize it's lost. Chip & PIN seems to be a reasonable safeguard against identity theft.
